To stop Windows 11 Do Not Disturb from turning on automatically, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications, expand Turn on do not disturb automatically, and switch off the rule causing it. Check Focus separately at Settings > System > Focus if Do Not Disturb starts with a Focus session.
Check Windows’ automatic Do Not Disturb rules
Windows can turn on Do Not Disturb for several independent reasons. Microsoft lists these conditions in its Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows guidance, checked October 4, 2026.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically.
- Review the conditions and turn off only the ones you do not want. Available rules include During these times, When duplicating the display, When playing a game, When using an app in full-screen mode, and For the first hour after a Windows feature update.
These rules operate independently. If you disable the schedule but leave the gaming or full-screen rule enabled, Do Not Disturb can still turn on when that other condition occurs.
Turn off or change the Do Not Disturb schedule
In Settings > System > Notifications > Turn on do not disturb automatically, find During these times. Turn off its switch to stop scheduled activation, or adjust the start time, end time, and repeat frequency if you still want quiet hours at different times. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance describes setting the schedule and its recurrence.

Check whether a Focus session is enabling it
Do Not Disturb also turns on automatically when a Focus session starts. Microsoft explains this in Focus: Stay on Task Without Distractions in Windows. If this is the cause, open Settings > System > Focus and turn off Turn on do not disturb for future sessions. Changing that option governs future sessions; it may not clear Do Not Disturb if it was already on before the session began.
Find notifications received while Do Not Disturb was on
Do Not Disturb silences notification banners; it does not delete the notifications. Open Notification Center by selecting the taskbar clock or notification bell, or press Windows key + N, to review notifications that arrived while they were suppressed.
If Do Not Disturb still turns on
- Return to Settings > System > Notifications > Turn on do not disturb automatically and check every enabled condition, not just the schedule.
- Open Settings > System > Focus and check whether Focus sessions are set to enable Do Not Disturb.
- Windows interfaces and available conditions can vary by build; some device options may also depend on hardware or organization management.
If all listed rules are off and the behavior continues, the Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish a single further fix. Avoid speculative registry changes or third-party utilities as a substitute for the documented settings.
