To stop a Windows PC from locking after inactivity, identify what is triggering it: the display turning off, sleep, a screen saver that asks for sign-in, or a policy such as Dynamic Lock or an organization-enforced inactivity limit. On a personal PC, check the relevant power and sign-in settings below; setting only one to Never may not stop the others. Keeping a computer unlocked while unattended exposes anything open on screen, so use these changes only when the trade-off is appropriate.
First, identify what is happening
A black screen, a sleeping PC, and a locked Windows session are different behaviors. Microsoft documents display power settings separately from screen-saver settings, and a screen saver can have its own sign-in requirement. Microsoft’s Power Policy CSP describes power controls, while Microsoft’s screen-saver guide covers the screen-saver controls.
| What you notice | Likely control to check |
|---|---|
| The display goes black, but moving the mouse brings back the desktop without asking for credentials. | Display timeout. |
| The PC wakes to the lock screen after being idle or sleeping. | Sleep and sign-in-after-waking settings, screen-saver sign-in, or an inactivity policy. |
| A screen saver appears before Windows asks you to sign in. | Screen saver and On resume, display logon screen. |
| The PC locks even though the screen saver is off. | Interactive logon inactivity policy, Dynamic Lock, presence sensing, or device-management software. |
| Settings are greyed out or revert later. | Group Policy, mobile device management (MDM), domain policy, or OEM/security software. |
| The PC locks when your paired phone moves away. | Dynamic Lock. |
Windows 11: change screen and sleep timeouts
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen and sleep.
- Set the relevant screen and sleep timeouts to Never. If the options are shown, check both On battery power and When plugged in for turning off the screen and putting the device to sleep.
The options shown can vary by device, Windows build, power configuration, and management policy. Some laptops may limit or hide settings because of Modern Standby, firmware, battery controls, or management. Microsoft’s power-mode guidance covers the Windows power settings.
Windows 10: change Power & sleep timeouts
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Power & sleep.
- Under Screen, set the timeout to Never for both battery and plugged-in use, if those choices are available.
- Under Sleep, set the timeout to Never for both battery and plugged-in use, if available.
Windows 10 uses the Power & sleep page; Windows 11 generally uses Power & battery > Screen and sleep. On a laptop, changing only the plugged-in values will not affect battery operation.

Turn off the screen saver and its sign-in prompt
The screen saver is independent of display timeout and sleep. Its Wait setting controls when the screen saver starts; On resume, display logon screen asks for sign-in when it ends. In Windows 10 and 11:
- Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under related settings, select Screen saver. Labels or placement may vary slightly by build.
- Set Screen saver to None.
- Clear On resume, display logon screen, then select Apply and OK.
You can open the classic Screen Saver Settings dialog with control desk.cpl,,1. Microsoft also documents this shortcut in its Remote Desktop Services troubleshooting guidance. Turning off the screen saver does not turn off sleep, Dynamic Lock, or a machine inactivity policy.
Change sign-in after waking or being away
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Find the option describing when Windows requires sign-in after you have been away or the device wakes.
- Choose Never if that option is available and you want to disable this prompt.
The wording and available choices depend on Windows version, account and security configuration, Windows Hello settings, and organizational policy. A managed PC may hide or override the choice. See Microsoft’s Windows sign-in options guidance.
Check Dynamic Lock if the PC locks when you walk away
Dynamic Lock can lock Windows when a paired Bluetooth phone or other device moves out of range. It is different from an inactivity timeout: the trigger is the paired device leaving, not simply a set period with no keyboard or mouse input.

- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Expand Dynamic lock.
- Clear Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away.
Microsoft describes Dynamic Lock as a way to help protect a device when its user forgets to lock it. Microsoft’s device-security guidance explains the security role of locking and sleep.
Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education: inspect inactivity policies
If consumer settings appear correct but Windows still locks, a security policy may be setting an idle limit. On editions that include the Local Security Policy console, inspect the machine inactivity limit:
- Press Windows + R, enter
secpol.msc, and press Enter. - Go to Local Policies > Security Options.
- Open Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit.
- If you administer this PC and no organization policy controls it, set the value to 0 or leave it blank if the dialog permits, then apply the change.
- Restart, or sign out and back in if required in your environment.
The policy is specified in seconds. Microsoft documents a range of 0 to 599,940 seconds; zero disables the inactivity limit. This number applies to this policy, not every Windows timeout. The setting can cause a session to lock after its threshold and can interact with screen-saver activation and display power-off. See Microsoft’s Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit documentation and its LocalPoliciesSecurityOptions policy reference.
Check Group Policy screen-saver settings
On editions with Local Group Policy Editor, press Windows + R, enter gpedit.msc, and inspect these locations:

- Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options: inspect Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit.
- User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization: inspect Enable screen saver, Screen saver timeout, Password protect the screen saver, and Force specific screen saver.
Microsoft notes that a timeout must be configured for Group Policy-driven screen-saver behavior. See Microsoft’s screen-saver Group Policy troubleshooting guidance. The Group Policy and Local Security Policy consoles are generally associated with Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions; they may not be present on Windows Home. If the PC is managed, do not try to bypass its policy.
Optional: change power timeouts with powercfg
Advanced users can run these commands in an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell session to set display and sleep timeouts for the currently active power scheme:
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-ac 0
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-dc 0
powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 0
powercfg /change standby-timeout-dc 0
monitor-timeout-acandmonitor-timeout-dcset the display timeout while plugged in and on battery.standby-timeout-acandstandby-timeout-dcset the sleep timeout while plugged in and on battery.- For these timeout settings,
0means no timeout.
Check which scheme is active with powercfg /getactivescheme. Use powercfg /query to inspect power settings and powercfg /requests to see whether applications or drivers are requesting that the display remain on or the PC stay awake. These commands change power behavior only; they do not disable screen-saver sign-in, Dynamic Lock, or the interactive logon inactivity policy. Microsoft documents the options in its powercfg command-line reference.
If settings are missing or keep reverting
When a setting is unavailable, greyed out, or resets after restart or sign-in, the cause may be management rather than a Windows fault. Check for Some settings are managed by your organization, and look under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school for a connected work or school account. A domain policy, Microsoft Intune or other MDM configuration, security baseline, or OEM utility can enforce a setting.

If you administer the PC, generate a Group Policy report from Command Prompt with:
gpresult /h "%USERPROFILE%Desktopgpresult.html"
Open gpresult.html from the desktop and review applied user and computer policies. An administrator can also check effective settings in Group Policy Results or the device-management service. Microsoft’s LocalPoliciesSecurityOptions policy reference describes how the inactivity limit can be configured through Group Policy and MDM. For a work or school computer, ask IT to explain or change the policy rather than attempting to bypass it.
- If the screen saver is off but locking continues, check sleep sign-in, Dynamic Lock, and the inactivity policy.
- If the display turns black but the desktop returns without a sign-in prompt, adjust the display timeout rather than treating it as a lock.
- If only a particular user is affected, check that user’s screen-saver settings and user policies.
- If only a Remote Desktop session behaves differently, its idle, lock, or disconnect policy may be separate from local Windows settings; see Microsoft’s RDS troubleshooting guidance.
- Presence-sensing features and vendor utilities may also lock a device independently of the settings above.
Verify the change and restore security when finished
- Save your work, then wait longer than the previous timeout.
- Test while plugged in and, on a laptop, test again on battery.
- Note whether the display merely turns off or whether Windows actually locks the session.
- Test after a restart or sign-out if settings previously reverted.
- Use Windows + L to check that manual locking still works.
Automatic locking protects an unattended session; disabling it can expose open files, messages, browser sessions, and business data. Never sleeping also increases energy use, can drain a laptop battery, and may keep a display active longer than desirable, particularly for OLED panels. For a temporary presentation or media session, use an appropriate temporary power setting rather than leaving a security-sensitive PC unlocked indefinitely. When you no longer need the exception, restore reasonable display and sleep timeouts, screen-saver sign-in, and sign-in after waking, as appropriate for your device and organization.
Screen savers are not generally needed to prevent the CRT burn-in they were originally designed to address, though they may still be used for personalization or display-specific reasons. For unattended devices, Microsoft recommends protective measures such as locking or sleep; see Securing your device.
