Waterproof boots can feel hot because their membranes ventilate less than open mesh, even when they let some water vapor escape. To reduce sweaty feet, first decide whether you need waterproof protection; then match sock thickness and boot insulation to your activity, and check the fit with the socks you plan to wear. If conditions allow, a more breathable hiking shoe may be more comfortable.
Why waterproof boots can make feet sweat
A waterproof membrane helps keep outside water out, but it also reduces ventilation compared with an open mesh upper. Some waterproof-breathable designs allow moisture vapor to escape; they still do not ventilate like mesh, and can feel warm in hot weather. REI explains this trade-off in its guide to choosing hiking boots and shoes.

Warmth matters too. Insulation that is useful when standing still in cold weather can be excessive during an active hike. REI’s cold-weather footwear guidance says highly active use with too much insulation can lead to sweating.

What to change first
- Decide whether waterproof boots are necessary. For dry, mild conditions without a need for the extra protection, consider non-waterproof footwear or hiking shoes, which are typically more breathable and dry faster. The trade-off is less protection from weather and some hazards. REI compares the options in its hiking boots and shoes overview.
- Reduce excess warmth for active use. If you need waterproof boots, choose insulation suited to the activity and conditions. Hiking or snowshoeing generally calls for less insulation than sedentary time outdoors in the cold.
- Try a thinner moisture-managing sock. Wool or synthetic hiking socks can move moisture away from skin. Cotton is not the preferred choice for this purpose. A thinner sock may also reduce heat and bulk, though it provides less insulation and cushioning.
- Check the fit with those socks on. Try the boots with the socks you intend to wear. If your feet feel cramped, reassess sock thickness or boot volume; a too-thick sock can crowd the boot and reduce room for the foot.
REI’s sock guide covers fiber and fit considerations. The right sock is not simply the thinnest one: it still needs to suit the weather, activity, and boot without making the fit tight.

Choose the trade-off that fits your conditions
| Option | What it offers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof boots with a breathable membrane | Protection from wet conditions, with some moisture-vapor escape | Less ventilation than open mesh; may feel warm in hot conditions |
| More breathable hiking shoes | Typically more ventilation and quicker drying | Less weather and hazard protection than boots in some situations |
| Thinner wool or synthetic socks | Moisture management with less bulk and heat | Less insulation and cushioning; must still suit the activity and fit the boot |
| Heavier socks or more insulation | More warmth for cold weather or lower-activity use | Can overheat active feet or crowd the boot |
Will waterproofing spray stop the sweating?
No. Waterproofing treatments maintain or restore water resistance; they are not a remedy for sweat or poor ventilation. Treatment depends on the boot’s upper material, and membrane areas generally need cleaning rather than added treatment. Follow the manufacturer’s care guidance. REI explains material-specific care in its hiking-boot waterproofing guide.

Protective rubber or synthetic waterproof work boots are a different case from hiking footwear. CDC guidance for that specific personal-protective-equipment context notes that these boots do not breathe like leather or fabric shoes and advises clean cotton or wool socks to absorb perspiration. Follow the requirements for the job and the boot maker’s directions; hiking sock advice should not override workplace safety guidance. See the CDC’s safe and effective use of pesticides guidance for its PPE context.
