To stop utilities when you move, contact each provider that bills an account in your name, request an end date that matches when your responsibility for the old home ends, and give the provider a mailing address for the final bill. Ask how to submit a final meter reading, keep the confirmation, and arrange service at your new address separately unless your provider offers a combined move process. Notice periods and procedures vary by provider and location.
1. Make a list of every utility account
Write down each service billed in your name at the old address. This commonly includes electricity, natural gas, water and sewer; include separately billed services such as internet or phone if you are closing or moving those accounts too. Contact every provider, not just the company that sends the largest bill. Missouri Public Service Commission guidance recommends notifying all utility companies serving the home (Missouri PSC, Changing Utility Service When Moving).

Check a recent bill, account portal or the provider’s official service-area information to confirm who bills each service. A city may handle water while a separate company supplies electricity or gas.
2. Contact each provider and set the stop date
Use the provider’s official website, app, phone line or form. Give the old service address and the date you want the account to end. Set that date for when your responsibility for the home ends, based on your lease, sale or other arrangement. In Portland, for example, the water bureau describes the stop date as the last date it will bill the responsible customer (City of Portland, Start, stop, or transfer your sewer, stormwater, water service).

Ask whether the provider can close the account online, whether it needs any account or identity details, and whether the request ends billing or also changes the physical service. A normal stop-service request is not necessarily a request to remove a service line or other utility infrastructure.
Give notice early, but confirm the local deadline
There is no single notice period established for every utility. Missouri PSC consumer guidance dated February 2019 recommends contacting providers as soon as possible and suggests doing so several weeks ahead where useful. Maryland PSC guidance says most utilities covered by its FAQ require at least 72 hours’ notice; that is Maryland-specific guidance, not a nationwide deadline (Maryland PSC, Start, Stop or Transfer Service).
Check each provider’s current instructions before choosing a date, especially if you are moving on short notice or need service to remain active through a particular day.

Ask whether a final meter reading is needed and how to arrange it. Missouri PSC recommends requesting an actual final reading for electricity, natural gas, water and sewer where applicable. The provider may instead allow a customer-submitted reading or photograph under its own process. PSE&G, for example, describes online entry of a final reading and submission of a meter picture (PSE&G, Start, Stop, or Transfer Service). Use only the method your provider approves; do not handle or alter utility-owned equipment.
4. Keep proof that you requested service to stop
Save the confirmation email, online receipt, reference number or written response. If you call, note the date and time, the representative’s name and what stop date was requested. Missouri PSC specifically advises customers to keep contact details for the request (Missouri PSC, Changing Utility Service When Moving).

The account holder should make the request directly. Missouri PSC cautions: “Do not rely on others to take utility service out of your name.” A landlord or incoming resident may have a separate account or arrangement, but that does not itself confirm that your account was closed.

5. Arrange service at the new address
Starting service at the new home is a separate task unless the provider confirms that it has combined the move-out and move-in requests. First verify which provider serves the new address, then ask about the start date, required documents and any deposit or service fee. Do not assume the provider at the old address serves the new one or that stopping the old account automatically starts a new account.

Inner stuff becomes self-explanatory while applying relevant labels, which could save your time and energy during massive work.
- Multiple Usage: Self-Adhesive stickers stick well on corrugated paper boxes, plastic cases, wooden boxes and most surfaces. Give it a glance and you will get where the one should be. All you need to take care about is DO NOT stick them direct to plane surfaces like mirrors or furniture because they DO stick tight.
When a provider offers a transfer
If the same provider serves both homes, compare its transfer option with closing the old account and opening a new one. Confirm the old stop date and new start date, what information or documents are required, how any deposit and final bill are handled, and whether a final meter reading is needed. PSE&G describes an internal transfer process for customers moving within its service area; its process applies to that provider, not to utilities generally (PSE&G, Start, Stop, or Transfer Service).
Dubai example: DEWA Move-To
For eligible Dubai customers, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s Move-To service combines electricity and water activation at the new premise with deactivation and final-bill handling at the old one. DEWA’s guide lists requirements including an existing account, a move-out date, the new premise number and valid Ejari for the new premises. It gives service estimates of within 15 working hours for move-in activation and within 24 working hours for move-out deactivation and final-bill delivery, with working hours Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. These are DEWA-specific operational estimates and may change (DEWA, Transfer of Electricity/Water (Move-to)).
6. Check the final bill and close out the account
When the final bill arrives, check its service dates and meter reading, then pay any balance due. If you paid a deposit or have an account credit, ask how the provider will apply or return it. Missouri PSC says deposits plus interest are generally applied to the final bill and any remaining credit refunded, but the handling can depend on local rules and account circumstances (Missouri PSC, Changing Utility Service When Moving).
If a bill arrives for service after your responsibility ended, contact the provider with your confirmation and relevant move-out details. Keep copies of the final bill and payment record.
Stopping billing is not the same as removing utility infrastructure
A routine request to stop service usually closes or changes the customer’s billing account; it does not necessarily disconnect a line from the utility’s network. Portland’s water bureau distinguishes stopping service from permanently removing a water service line, which is a separate project with its own local requirements and costs. Do not treat Portland’s process or charges as applying elsewhere (City of Portland, Start, stop, or transfer your sewer, stormwater, water service).
