Start by tuning the car radio to a locally clear FM frequency, then set the transmitter to that exact frequency. If static persists, try another clear channel and temporarily unplug nearby accessories. When ordinary radio stations are noisy too, the problem may be the car’s reception system or electrical interference—not just the transmitter.
Why an FM transmitter sounds staticky
A car FM transmitter sends audio over a chosen radio frequency, which the vehicle’s FM receiver must pick up. A local station or interference on that frequency can mask the transmitter. The best frequency can change along your route, so one that works at departure may become noisy later. Avantree’s Roadtrip FM Static or Noise Issues support guidance emphasizes choosing a frequency not used by a local station; Laser gives similar advice in its FM transmitter FAQ.

The radio and transmitter also need to be set to the same frequency. If their displays differ, the result may be weak, noisy, or absent audio. The MT02 manual describes the transmitter as sending audio from a wireless device to a car FM system; its instructions are one example of this matching requirement.

Fix transmitter-only static in this order
- Scan for a clear frequency. With the car radio, check for a frequency with no music, speech, or identifiable station. Slight background static may remain, but avoid a frequency occupied by a local broadcaster.
- Match both frequency settings. Set the transmitter to precisely the same frequency shown on the radio. Verify the displays before trying other changes.
- Try another clear frequency. If strong static remains, scan again and select a different locally clear channel. Repeat this check if noise returns as you drive into a new area.
- Isolate nearby accessories. Temporarily unplug other electronic accessories, such as chargers, and listen again. If the sound changes, investigate the accessory or its power connection rather than assuming the transmitter is faulty. Avantree recommends this as a way to check for nearby electronic interference.
Use the symptom to find the right next check

When the car radio itself may be the problem
Listen to ordinary FM stations with the transmitter off. If they also have poor reception, a transmitter frequency mismatch is less likely to be the whole explanation. Sony’s car stereo reception guidance advises checking that the antenna lead is securely connected to the correct jack and having a suspected ground problem checked by an installer. For unresolved antenna, grounding, or installation issues, use a qualified car-audio professional.

Electrical equipment in the vehicle can also interfere with reception. Canada’s radio regulator, ISED, notes that certain vehicle electrical devices—including some LED lights—can interfere with FM radios in its guidance on interference from vehicle electrical devices. If unplugging an accessory changes the symptom, that is a useful clue for further diagnosis.

When to contact support or seek service
- Contact the transmitter maker if several locally clear frequencies and accessory isolation do not improve transmitter-only static.
- Arrange car-audio diagnosis if ordinary FM reception is also poor or antenna and grounding checks are needed.
- Consider replacing the transmitter only after these checks point to a device fault. A new transmitter will not necessarily solve local frequency congestion or interference from the vehicle.
