To stop Spotify from continuing with similar music, turn off Autoplay: on mobile or tablet, tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, choose Playback, and switch Autoplay off. On desktop, click your profile picture, open Settings, and switch Autoplay off.
If another podcast episode still starts, the cause may be the show’s episode sequence or your queue—not the similar-song Autoplay setting. To hear just one episode, use the queue to select that episode and check that no other content is queued. For a hands-off stop at the end of the episode you’re listening to, use Spotify’s Sleep Timer and choose End of episode.

The key is to identify what happens after your chosen episode: similar music, another episode in a sequence, or something already in the queue. Spotify’s Autoplay help describes similar-song continuation, while Spotify Community moderators explain the podcast-sequence and queue behavior. Those controls solve different problems, so turning off Autoplay may not stop every kind of continuation.

Spotify’s official support description says Autoplay plays similar songs when an album, playlist, or selection of songs ends. It does not describe a separate podcast-specific Autoplay switch. Turning off this setting is still the right first step if Spotify continues into similar music, but it may not stop a podcast episode that follows another episode in a show or queue.

That distinction matters because the word “autoplay” can describe more than one listener experience. You might mean that Spotify starts recommended music after a listening selection ends, or you might mean that a podcast episode follows the one you selected. Spotify’s support page describes the first behavior. Spotify Community moderators discuss the second as show-sequence or queue behavior. Start by observing what plays next rather than assuming one switch controls both.
On a phone or tablet
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Under Playback, switch Autoplay off.
This is the mobile and tablet path described by Spotify Support. If the labels look slightly different, look for the Playback section in Settings and privacy and the Autoplay switch there. The exact interface may vary as Spotify changes its app or tests updates; the support directions identify the setting, not a promise that every screen will look identical.
On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Choose Settings.
- Switch Autoplay off.
The desktop path is shorter: open the profile menu, go to Settings, and switch off Autoplay. The support description does not specify a separate desktop podcast-autoplay option. If a podcast continues after this change, investigate the episode sequence and queue rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.
Spotify’s South Africa English support page describes the setting this way: “When you reach the end of an album, playlist, or selection of songs, Spotify automatically plays similar songs so the music never stops.” Wording may differ slightly in other regions. The quote is specifically about similar songs; it should not be read as a detailed explanation of every way a podcast can continue.
If another podcast episode starts, check the queue
A Spotify Community moderator explains that a podcast show can behave like an album, with episodes continuing in sequence or from the queue. That is a different behavior from Autoplay’s similar-song continuation, so switching Autoplay off may not stop it. In practical terms, the next episode may be there because of how the show was started or because the queue already contains more items—not because Spotify ignored the Autoplay switch.

- If you want to hear only one selected episode, add that episode to the play queue rather than starting a whole show sequence.
- Check the queue for other episodes or content that may follow the one you chose. If the queue contains more items, playback can continue with them.
- On desktop, a Spotify Community moderator says opening and playing a single episode adds that episode to the queue. If nothing else is queued and Autoplay is off, playback stops when that episode ends.
These queue steps are moderator guidance from Spotify Community, not a guarantee for every app version or device. The advice is useful when the symptom is another podcast episode beginning, but it does not provide a universal menu-by-menu queue procedure for every version of Spotify. If your screen differs, focus on the underlying check: is another item listed to play after the episode you selected?
Spotify moderators have described mobile behavior as expected in the discussion while also noting that the app can behave differently as Spotify tests and releases changes. One moderator wrote, “We can confirm that this is the current expected behavior on mobile.” That statement refers to the behavior discussed in that Community thread and its device/version context; it is not a guarantee that every mobile user will see the same sequence indefinitely.
How to tell whether it is the queue or Autoplay
Use the content that starts next as a clue. If Spotify moves from your finished selection into similar songs, the Autoplay setting is the relevant control described by Spotify Support. If a different episode from the podcast starts, look at whether you began a show sequence and whether additional items are in the queue. If you want the currently playing episode to finish but nothing to follow it, use the Sleep Timer’s end-of-episode option.
This is a diagnosis, not an extra setting: Spotify’s official Autoplay help does not define a podcast-only switch, and the Community explanation of podcast continuation comes from moderator replies. Keep those source distinctions in mind when troubleshooting. The queue approach is the supported-by-moderator workaround for controlling the next episode; Autoplay off is not a substitute for checking what is queued.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
| Control | What it addresses | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Autoplay off | Similar songs Spotify would otherwise play after an album, playlist, or selection of songs ends, according to Spotify Support. | You want to stop similar-song continuation. |
| Queue selection | Which podcast episode or other item plays next. | You want to hear one episode rather than a continuing show or queue. |
| Sleep Timer: End of episode | Stops playback when the current podcast episode ends. | You want the current episode to finish, then playback to stop. |
Think of these as three different interventions, not three versions of the same toggle. Autoplay off addresses similar-song recommendations after a listening selection. Queue selection determines what item is lined up next. The Sleep Timer is a stopping point for the episode already playing. Choose based on whether your priority is preventing recommendations, choosing a single next item, or ending playback after the current episode.

For example, if you hear an episode followed by another episode from the same show, first check whether you started the show as a sequence and inspect the queue. If you hear similar music after an album or playlist, use the Autoplay setting. If you are listening at bedtime and simply want the current podcast to finish before playback stops, choose End of episode in Sleep Timer. The latter does not change what is in the queue or permanently change Autoplay.
Stop playback after the current episode
Spotify’s Sleep Timer includes an End of episode option for podcast listening. While a podcast is playing, open the Now Playing view, tap Sleep Timer, and select End of episode. This is useful when you do not want playback to run beyond the episode you are already hearing; it does not change Autoplay or clear the queue.
This option is different from stopping playback right away. It lets the current episode finish, then ends playback at that episode’s end. Use it when you are content to hear the rest of the current episode and want Spotify to stop afterward. If your goal is instead to select which episode follows the current one, manage the queue; a timer is not a queue editor.
Spotify Support’s Sleep Timer instructions describe opening the timer from the Now Playing view while listening to a podcast. The support article dates to 2022, so the precise location or appearance of the control may differ in the current app. If you do not see the same screen, look in the Now Playing view for Sleep Timer rather than expecting the setting to appear alongside Autoplay in Playback.
If the setting or behavior looks different
- The menu label or location differs: Spotify’s labels and app behavior can vary by device, app version, and changes Spotify is testing or releasing. Look for Autoplay under Playback on mobile or tablet, or in desktop Settings.
- A podcast episode still follows the one you chose: Check the queue and whether you started a sequence of episodes. Use the queue to select only the episode you want.
- Similar music continues after a selection: Revisit the Autoplay switch in Settings. Spotify Support defines this switch in terms of similar songs after an album, playlist, or selection of songs.
- You want the current episode to finish before stopping: Use Sleep Timer’s End of episode option instead of stopping playback immediately.
- You turned Autoplay off but still hear a podcast: That does not necessarily mean the setting failed. The support page explains similar-song Autoplay, while a Community moderator attributes podcast continuation to show-sequence or queue behavior.
Spotify’s official Autoplay explanation concerns similar songs, while the podcast sequence and queue explanation comes from Spotify Community moderators. The Sleep Timer instructions are from Spotify Support; Spotify’s article about the feature dates to 2022, and the control’s precise location may differ in the current app. The moderator guidance is version-sensitive, especially for mobile behavior, so use it as troubleshooting advice rather than a universal promise.

Common mistakes to avoid
Do not expect Autoplay off to empty your queue. The Autoplay setting and queue selection have different jobs. If other items are queued, they may still be the next items in playback. Check the queue when the unwanted continuation is another podcast or another queued item.
Do not confuse “stop after this episode” with “choose what plays next.” Sleep Timer’s End of episode option stops playback after the current episode. It is appropriate when you want to finish listening and then stop, not when you want to keep listening to a particular next episode.
Do not assume the same interface on every device. The mobile/tablet and desktop paths for Autoplay differ. Spotify Community moderators also describe device and version variation in podcast behavior. If a menu label or queue behavior does not match a description, use the relevant control’s purpose to guide the next check instead of assuming the setting has been removed.
Do not look for a podcast-only Autoplay switch that Spotify’s support page does not describe. Spotify’s official help explains Autoplay as similar-song continuation. For a podcast episode following another, the Community advice is to control the queue or avoid starting a whole show sequence when you want one episode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA quick troubleshooting sequence
- Identify what starts next. Is it similar music, another podcast episode, or an item you recognize from the queue?
- Turn off Autoplay if the next content is similar music. Follow the mobile/tablet or desktop path above.
- Check the queue if another episode or queued item follows. For a single-episode listen, use the queue to select that episode and check that nothing else is listed to follow it.
- Use End of episode if you want a timed stop. Open Now Playing while the podcast is playing, select Sleep Timer, and choose the episode-end option.
- Allow for app variation. Menu labels and behavior may differ by app version or device; moderator guidance about the podcast sequence is not a guarantee for every current configuration.
This order keeps the fix aligned with the symptom. It avoids changing Autoplay when the actual issue is an episode already in the queue, and it avoids using the Sleep Timer when you really want to control the next episode. No separate hardware purchase is needed for these fixes: the relevant controls are Spotify’s in-app playback, queue, and timer features.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a separate Spotify setting to stop podcasts from autoplaying?
Spotify’s official Autoplay help describes similar songs playing after an album, playlist, or selection of songs; it does not describe a separate podcast-specific Autoplay switch. If another podcast episode starts, Spotify Community moderator guidance points to the show sequence or queue as the likely control to check.
Why does Spotify play another podcast after I turned Autoplay off?
Autoplay off addresses similar-song continuation, according to Spotify Support. A podcast can continue because episodes are following a show sequence or because other items are in the queue, as Spotify Community moderators explain. Check the queue and whether you started a sequence rather than expecting the Autoplay switch to remove queued episodes.
How can I listen to only one Spotify podcast episode?
Spotify Community moderators advise adding the episode you want to the play queue instead of starting a whole show sequence, then checking that no other content is queued after it. On desktop, a moderator says opening and playing a single episode adds it to the queue; with Autoplay off and nothing else queued, playback stops when that episode ends. This guidance may vary by app version and device.

While the podcast is playing, open Now Playing, tap Sleep Timer, and choose End of episode. That lets the current episode finish before playback stops. It does not clear the queue or change Autoplay.
Where is Spotify Autoplay on mobile and desktop?
On mobile or tablet, tap your profile picture, choose Settings and privacy, open Playback, and switch Autoplay off. On desktop, click your profile picture, choose Settings, and switch Autoplay off. Labels can vary with app version.
Does Spotify’s podcast autoplay behavior work the same on every device?
Not necessarily. Spotify Community moderators have described mobile behavior as expected in a particular discussion and cautioned that Spotify tests and releases changes that can produce different behavior. Treat the queue workaround as version-sensitive guidance, not a guarantee for every device.
The Bottom Line
Turn off Autoplay to stop Spotify’s similar-song continuation. If another podcast episode still starts, check the show sequence and queue; to stop after the episode already playing, use Sleep Timer’s End of episode option. Those controls address different causes, and Spotify Community guidance about podcast queue behavior may vary by app version and device.
