For unwanted email, choose the action that matches the message: mark suspicious or unsolicited mail as spam or junk, unsubscribe from a legitimate mailing list you joined, and block a repeat sender through your email provider. If a message might be phishing, report it as phishing and do not click its links or open attachments.
Spam, unwanted newsletters, and phishing need different responses
Before acting, decide whether you recognize the sender and trust the message. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says many providers have spam filters enabled by default, but unwanted messages can still reach your inbox. Use your provider’s spam or junk control to report those messages; the report can help its filtering systems identify similar mail.

- Unsolicited or suspicious email: Mark it as spam or junk. If it appears to be an attempt to steal information or deliver malware, use the provider’s phishing-report option instead.
- A legitimate newsletter or promotion you signed up for: Use the provider’s unsubscribe control if you no longer want it.
- A repeat sender you want to stop hearing from: Block the sender in the account’s settings, where that feature is supported.
- A message you are unsure about: Do not use its unsubscribe link or interact with its attachments. Report it as spam or phishing through your email provider.
These actions are not interchangeable: unsubscribing is appropriate for a mailing list you trust, while reporting phishing is for a message you do not trust. Blocking one address also cannot guarantee that all unwanted email will stop; senders and provider filtering behavior vary. How to handle unwanted messages in Gmail
Gmail provides controls to report spam, block an unwanted sender, report phishing, and unsubscribe from a list you joined. The available controls can vary by device or interface, so use the message’s menu or the relevant Gmail help instructions rather than relying on one universal set of screen labels.

- Open the message in Gmail and choose the spam-reporting control if it is unsolicited or unwanted.
- For a sender you recognize and want to stop receiving messages from, choose the option to block that sender.
- If you suspect phishing or do not trust the sender, choose the phishing-reporting option instead of clicking links or attachments.
- For a legitimate newsletter you signed up for, use Gmail’s unsubscribe option when available.
- Check the Spam folder occasionally in case Gmail placed a wanted message there by mistake.
Gmail says reported messages are added to Spam and that reporting more spam helps it identify similar messages. Its spam and phishing help page explains the controls.
Block senders in Outlook based on the account you use
Outlook’s blocking options depend on the Outlook edition and the account behind the mailbox. Microsoft’s instructions cover blocked senders and domains for supported accounts and versions. In supported new Outlook scenarios, mail from a blocked address or domain goes to Junk.

In new Outlook, sender blocking is not available for connected third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud. If you read one of those accounts in Outlook, manage blocking and spam reporting through that email provider’s own controls instead.

- Identify whether the mailbox is an Outlook account or a connected third-party account.
- For a supported Outlook account and edition, open the relevant blocked senders or junk email settings and add the address—or domain, if appropriate—to the blocked list.
- For a connected Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud account in new Outlook, switch to that provider’s app or website and use its spam or blocking controls.
Because menu names and availability vary by edition and account type, follow Microsoft’s instructions for the version you use: Block or unblock senders in Outlook.

What to do if an email may be a scam or contain malware
Do not click a link, open an attachment, reply, or try to unsubscribe if you cannot trust the message. Report suspected phishing through your email provider. In the United States, the FTC also accepts scam reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; its consumer guidance explains how to report unwanted messages and scams.
If you clicked a suspicious link or opened an attachment and think it may have installed harmful software, scan the device. If the scan identifies malware, take steps to remove it, following the FTC’s guidance on spam and malware.

Check Spam or Junk for messages you still need
Spam filters and blocking can misclassify wanted messages. If an expected email does not appear in your inbox, check Spam or Junk before assuming it was never sent. If you find a wanted message there, use your provider’s option to mark it as not spam or move it back to the inbox, as available.
