To stop Siri from automatically reading texts while keeping other spoken alerts, open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > Messages, then turn off Announce Notifications. In iOS 26, some devices or accessory setups may show the control under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Announce Notifications instead. These steps stop automatic spoken Messages alerts; they do not turn off Messages or prevent you from asking Siri a question.
Stop Siri from reading only Messages
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Notifications, then Announce Notifications.
- Under Announce Notifications From, tap Messages.
- Turn off Announce Notifications.
This disables spoken announcements for Messages while leaving announcements from other apps available if they are enabled. Apple documents this path for supported AirPods and notification announcements; the exact menu presentation can vary with device, software, region, and connected accessory. Apple’s AirPods guide
Why Messages may be announced through headphones
Automatic announcements can occur when compatible AirPods or supported Beats headphones are paired with the iPhone and Announce Notifications is enabled for Messages. In the standard headphone scenario, the iPhone is locked. Apple lists AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max as supported models; availability also depends on software, language, region, and connection state. Apple’s supported-model and setup details
Turn off spoken announcements for every app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications or, on some configurations, Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap Announce Notifications.
- Turn off the main Announce Notifications control.
This stops Siri from announcing notifications from apps configured for the feature. It is broader than switching off Messages alone, so use the per-app setting if you still want spoken alerts from selected apps. Apple’s current guides show more than one settings path: Announce Notifications settings and AirPods announcement options.

Stop Siri from reading texts in CarPlay
If messages are read aloud only in the car, check CarPlay rather than assuming AirPods are involved. On the iPhone, review the Announce Notifications settings above. You can also use CarPlay’s on-screen Announce control while Siri is reading an incoming message to adjust the behavior. CarPlay has its own message-handling context, so changing a headphone-specific control may not address what you hear in the car. Apple’s CarPlay announcement instructions
CarPlay also supports asking Siri to handle messages, including sending and replying, so distinguish a notification announcement from a response to a request you made. Apple’s CarPlay Messages guide

Check Apple Watch and Beats settings
Apple Watch
If the spoken alert comes from your watch, inspect its controls separately: open Settings > Siri > Announce Notifications on Apple Watch. The iPhone, watch, headphones, and CarPlay may present related announcement controls in different places. Apple’s announcement settings guide
Beats headphones
For supported Beats products on iOS 26 or later, Apple’s guide places the control at Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Announce Notifications. If that path is not shown, check Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications as well. Apple’s Beats Siri guide

Stop an announcement temporarily
- Use Control Center: If you have added the Announce Notifications control, use it to switch announcements off temporarily, then turn them back on when wanted. Apple’s Control Center instructions
- Dismiss the current announcement: Available controls depend on the accessory. With AirPods 2, say “Stop” or “Cancel,” or double-tap either AirPod. With AirPods 3, AirPods 4, or AirPods Pro 1, press the force sensor; with AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3, press the touch control; with AirPods Max, press the Digital Crown. Some newer models support shaking your head side to side to dismiss. Apple’s model-specific controls
- Remove an earbud or the headphones: Apple says this can stop a group of pending announcements.
- Use Focus: Choose this when you want notifications suppressed temporarily or according to a schedule, rather than permanently changing which apps Siri announces.
- In CarPlay: Use the Announce control while the message is being read.
Choose the setting that matches what you want to stop
| Your goal | Setting to use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Stop Siri reading texts but keep other spoken app alerts | Turn off Announce Notifications for Messages | Other apps can still be announced. |
| Stop all spoken notification announcements | Turn off the main Announce Notifications control | Announcements from all apps using the feature stop. |
| Silence a particular person or group | Use Hide Alerts for that conversation | Mutes that conversation; it is not the global Siri announcement control. |
| Stop ordinary Messages alerts entirely | Turn off Allow Notifications for Messages | This is broader and can stop normal visual and audible alerts as well as affecting how you receive notifications. |
| Reduce interruptions temporarily or by schedule | Use Focus | Notifications are limited according to the Focus settings and schedule. |
| Stop announcements only in the car | Adjust the CarPlay Announce control | This addresses the CarPlay context; check headphone settings separately if needed. |

- Identify the source. Note whether the voice comes through AirPods or Beats, Apple Watch, CarPlay, or the iPhone itself. A control in one context may not govern another.
- Check the Messages-specific switch. If you want to keep announcements from other apps, confirm that Messages is off under Announce Notifications From, not just that you changed notification previews or a different reading control.
- Check the global switch and alternate path. Look under both Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and, if present, Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Announce Notifications.
- Check CarPlay or Apple Watch separately. If the behavior happens only while driving or through the watch, review the corresponding controls above.
- Decide whether Siri was asked to read it. Announce Notifications controls automatic incoming-notification announcements. It does not necessarily prevent Siri from speaking message content in response to an explicit request.
- Reconnect the accessory only after checking settings. If the relevant controls are correct but announcements continue through headphones, reconnect them to the iPhone and check the behavior again.
Some time-sensitive or direct-message notifications may be announced when the feature is enabled, which is why checking both the global setting and the Messages selection matters. Apple’s explanation of Announce Notifications

Spoken announcements are not message previews
If the concern is that message text appears on the lock screen rather than being read aloud, change the Messages notification-preview settings instead. A visible preview is separate from Siri speaking a notification; disabling Announce Notifications alone is not a lock-screen privacy setting. Likewise, muting a conversation or turning off ordinary Messages notifications solves a different problem from stopping spoken announcements.
Apple’s current cited instructions cover iOS 26 and related 2026 operating systems, but menu labels and availability vary by device, accessory, language, region, and connection. The setting to seek is Announce Notifications; use the path that appears on your device.
