Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If the Windows key does nothing, first determine whether Windows is ignoring one key, the keyboard is locked, or the entire input device is failing. Restart the PC, try both Windows keys, test Win+E and Ctrl+Esc, disable any Win Lock or Game Mode, and connect another keyboard before changing the registry or resetting Windows.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Existing PCs continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal feature updates, free security fixes, or standard technical assistance. See Microsoft’s lifecycle notice.
Identify exactly what is broken
The symptom pattern determines the safest next step:
- Only the left or right key fails: a worn switch, debris, or a keyboard-matrix fault is more likely.
- Both Windows keys fail but other keys work: check Win Lock, remapping software, drivers, and Windows settings.
- The key opens Start but Win+E, Win+R, or Win+I fails: a shortcut interception or software conflict may be involved.
- The key produces another character or action: inspect remaps and keyboard profiles.
- The Start menu also fails: Windows Explorer or broader system corruption may be involved.
- The whole keyboard fails: troubleshoot power, USB, Bluetooth, drivers, and hardware rather than focusing only on the Windows key.
- A USB keyboard works while the laptop keyboard does not: the built-in keyboard, cable, firmware, or manufacturer hotkey utility is suspect.
Use the following sequence; stop when the key works.

Try these two-minute checks first
- Restart Windows.
- Press the Windows key by itself, then test Win+E, Win+R, and Win+I.
- If the keyboard has two Windows keys, test both.
- Press Ctrl+Esc. This opens Start on standard Windows systems and is a temporary substitute, not a repair.
- Test the key in a simple text field and by clicking the Start button with the mouse.
- Connect a second keyboard to the same PC if one is available.
Use the On-Screen Keyboard as a comparison
Search the taskbar for On-Screen Keyboard. If search is difficult, press Ctrl+Esc and type the name. You can also open Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and enable Use the On-Screen Keyboard. Microsoft’s accessibility information is at this page.
Click the on-screen Windows key. If it opens Start, Windows is accepting the command and a physical key, lock mode, remap, or driver is more likely at fault. If it also fails, investigate Explorer, policies, software conflicts, and system files. This test narrows the possibilities but does not identify one cause by itself.
Check Win Lock and Game Mode
Gaming keyboards often disable the Windows key to prevent an accidental desktop switch. Look for a key or indicator labeled Win Lock, Game Mode, or a padlock/Windows-logo icon. The control may be a dedicated button, an Fn combination, or a setting in the keyboard utility.
Press the dedicated control once, or open the utility made for your keyboard and turn off the option that disables the Windows key. There is no universal Fn shortcut; it varies by model. If the key works on the desktop but not inside a game, check the game’s profile, overlays, and Game Mode before changing Windows.
Check the keyboard and its connection
USB keyboards
- Unplug and reconnect the keyboard.
- Try a different USB port, preferably one connected directly to the PC.
- Bypass a USB hub or dock.
- Inspect the key for debris, liquid residue, looseness, or a stuck mechanism.
Wireless receiver keyboards
- Recharge the keyboard or replace its batteries.
- Reconnect or reset the receiver and try a different USB port.
- Keep the receiver away from sources of USB or radio interference.
Bluetooth keyboards
Recharge the device, remove it under Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, then pair it again. Test with a wired keyboard if possible.
Compare another computer
Test the suspect keyboard on another computer and test a known-good keyboard on the affected PC. Microsoft’s hardware guidance is available at Mouse and keyboard problems in Windows. If the keyboard fails on another computer, replacement or repair is likely. If another keyboard works immediately on this PC, the original device, its profile, or its connection is the likely cause.
Disable remapping and keyboard utilities
Temporarily close or disable, then restart Windows before retesting:

- PowerToys Keyboard Manager
- AutoHotkey, SharpKeys, or similar remappers
- Logitech G Hub or Options
- Razer Synapse
- Corsair iCUE
- SteelSeries GG
- ASUS Armoury Crate
- Lenovo Vantage or other manufacturer hotkey utilities
- Game launchers, overlays, or anti-cheat tools that provide keyboard controls
Do not uninstall every utility immediately. Disabling one at a time preserves lighting, macro, media-key, and firmware functions while identifying the conflict. PowerToys’ mapping documentation is at Microsoft Learn. Restore the intended mapping after the test.
Update or reinstall the keyboard driver
- Open Start and search for Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- If that changes nothing, right-click it again, choose Uninstall device, and restart Windows.
- If Windows does not redetect it, open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Several entries may be named HID Keyboard Device; do not remove unrelated hardware. Laptop hotkeys can depend on a manufacturer utility, chipset package, or firmware rather than only the generic keyboard driver. Obtain drivers through Windows Update or the computer or keyboard maker’s official support site. Microsoft’s driver guidance is at Device Manager error codes.
Restart Windows Explorer when Start is also stuck
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart.
- If it is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
This refreshes the Windows shell. It will not repair a physically broken switch or a remap that intercepts the key. Microsoft’s broader Explorer guidance is at Fix File Explorer if it won’t open or start.
Check accessibility settings
Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and review Filter Keys, Sticky Keys, and related options. Turn off anything enabled unintentionally and test again. Filter Keys changes how brief or repeated keystrokes are handled; it is not the usual explanation for a completely ignored Windows key when every other key works.
Isolate background software with Safe Mode or a clean boot
Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of files, drivers, and services. If the Windows key works there, a third-party service, driver, utility, or profile is likely responsible. If it remains broken, hardware, low-level remapping, core configuration, or Windows corruption becomes more likely. Follow Microsoft’s Windows startup settings instructions. Recovery screens may request a BitLocker recovery key.
Recommended Free Tools
Clean boot
- Sign in as an administrator and search for System Configuration, or run
msconfig. - Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and use Task Manager to disable startup items.
- Restart and test the Windows key.
- Re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict is identified.
- Restore normal startup when finished.
Use Microsoft’s procedure at How to perform a clean boot in Windows. Do not omit Hide all Microsoft services; disabling essential Windows services can create additional problems.
Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Use these tools after hardware, lock mode, remapping, and driver checks, or sooner if several Windows features are malfunctioning. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and retest. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses. Details are at Using System File Checker in Windows.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they cannot repair a broken key switch, keyboard firmware, or an intentional third-party remap.
Inspect advanced remapping only with a rollback plan
A Windows-level Scancode Map value can disable or redirect keys. It may have been created by remapping software, an administrator, malware, or an earlier repair attempt. Check it only after safer tests.
The value is commonly located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout
Before changing anything, create a restore point and export that key in Registry Editor. Record whether the mapping was intentional and identify the software that created it. Do not blindly delete Scancode Map; removing the wrong value can create new input problems. If you cannot interpret the entry or restore it, leave it unchanged and use the remapping utility’s reset function or a qualified technician. Microsoft warns that improper registry changes can cause instability, application errors, or prevent Windows from starting: system-configuration tools in Windows.
When an update or installation is the obvious trigger
If the key stopped working immediately after a Windows update, keyboard utility, game, or other installation, reverse that specific change rather than resetting the PC. Depending on what happened, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates, disable or remove the newly installed utility, or use System Restore if a restore point exists. Microsoft explains the different effects of System Restore, update removal, Startup Repair, Reset, and reinstalling Windows at Recovery options in Windows.
If malware or an unauthorized tweak is suspected, run a reputable security scan and back up important files before recovery work. A managed work or school computer may have a policy that disables or remaps keys; contact the administrator instead of editing the registry.
When to repair or replace the keyboard
Hardware service is the sensible next step when:
- The keyboard fails on another computer.
- The Windows key is loose, sticky, physically damaged, or contaminated by liquid.
- The key fails before Windows loads, including in BIOS or UEFI.
- A USB keyboard works normally while the laptop’s built-in key does not.
- Only one key fails after software, driver, and lock checks are normal.
For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s repair channel or a reputable local shop; ribbon-cable and top-case repairs vary by model and region. Do not replace the entire PC solely because one key failed. A replacement USB keyboard is appropriate when the original fails on another computer or a second keyboard immediately solves the problem.
Decision guide
| Test | Result | Most likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Another keyboard on this PC | Works | Original keyboard, connection, profile, or Win Lock |
| On-Screen Keyboard Windows key | Works | Physical key, lock, remap, or driver |
| Windows key in Safe Mode | Works | Third-party software or service |
| Suspect keyboard on another PC | Fails | Repair or replace the keyboard |
| Both Windows keys and Start fail | Still broken after Explorer restart | Software isolation, recovery, or system-file investigation |
Frequently asked questions
Why does Ctrl+Esc work when the Windows key does not?
They are separate keyboard inputs that both open Start. Ctrl+Esc bypasses a disabled or remapped Windows key, so it is useful while troubleshooting.

Why does the Windows key work outside games but not inside them?
The game or keyboard profile may enable Win Lock, Game Mode, an overlay, or a per-game remap. Check those controls first.
Can I use Windows without the Windows key?
Yes. Use Ctrl+Esc, the Start button, mouse-based Settings paths, and the On-Screen Keyboard while you repair or replace the physical key.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Filter Keys responsible?
It can alter handling of brief or repeated keystrokes, but a completely dead Windows key is more often caused by hardware, Win Lock, remapping, or a driver.
Will reinstalling Windows fix it?
Only if damaged Windows components or configuration are the cause. Reinstallation cannot repair a failed switch, cable, firmware profile, or keyboard lock, so reserve it for last-resort recovery after backups.
Does Windows 10’s end of support disable the Windows key?
No. Support ended on October 14, 2025, but that lifecycle change does not disable keyboard input. It does mean future troubleshooting and security support are limited.
What if only the left Windows key fails?
Test the right key and another keyboard. One failed key strongly points to a physical switch, debris, or keyboard-matrix fault rather than Windows itself.
