OneDrive notifications can be useful—until they start interrupting you every time a file syncs, a backup runs, or an action is recommended. The good news: you can stop most OneDrive notifications by targeting the right setting for your device and app.
This guide covers Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone/iPad. It also addresses the annoying edge cases—like notifications returning after updates, or sync prompts that come from a different OneDrive component than the one you’re currently controlling.

What OneDrive notifications are (and why you might be seeing them)
OneDrive can generate notifications for multiple reasons: sync status, failures, “new features” prompts, backup/camera roll uploads, and sometimes browser or system permission prompts. On some platforms, those alerts are tied to different notification categories or channels.
If you disable notifications at the wrong layer (for example, only inside the OneDrive app while Windows still allows notifications), the system may still show alerts.

Before you change anything: identify the notification source
Ask two quick questions so you can turn off the right thing:
- Where do you see the notification? Windows Action Center, macOS Notification Center, Android notification shade, or iPhone/iPad lock screen.
- What app name shows? Often it’s “Microsoft OneDrive,” but sometimes it’s a specific Microsoft component or a browser prompt.
If the notification includes a file path or a “sync” message, you’re likely dealing with the OneDrive desktop sync client rather than a generic app reminder.
Stop OneDrive notifications on Windows 10/11
Windows has two common layers to check: the OS notification permission and OneDrive’s own behavior. Start with the OS layer because it’s the most reliable.
Method 1: Turn off OneDrive app notifications in Windows Settings
On Windows 11, the fastest path is the Notifications settings screen. This disables OneDrive alerts at the OS level.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Notifications.
- Find OneDrive in the list.
- Turn Notifications Off.
- Optional: turn off Get notifications from apps and other senders if you want silence across everything (not recommended if you still need other alerts).
On Windows 10, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions, then locate OneDrive and turn it off.
Method 2: Disable the OneDrive desktop app notification behavior
If you still see sync notifications, you may be dealing with the desktop client’s behavior. Try the OneDrive settings to reduce prompts.

- Click the ^ (hidden icons) near the system tray.
- Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Select Settings.
- On the Settings tab, look for options related to notifications or prompts (wording can vary by OneDrive build).
- Apply any available “notification” toggles to stop non-critical alerts.
If you see fewer options than expected, it usually means OneDrive moved to a notification-channel model, so the Windows OS notification toggle is the most important control.

Method 3: Use Focus Assist to silence notifications
If you can’t fully disable OneDrive notifications because you need critical alerts during work hours, Focus Assist is a practical compromise.
- Open Settings > System > Focus assist.
- Choose one mode such as Priority only or Alarms only.
- Set schedules for work hours.
- If available, ensure OneDrive is not included as a priority source during those times.
This doesn’t “turn off” notifications permanently, but it prevents interruptions when you don’t want them.
Stop OneDrive notifications on macOS
macOS controls app notifications at the system level. Disabling OneDrive there is usually enough.
Method 1: Disable OneDrive notifications in System Settings
Use System Settings to fully stop banners and alerts from OneDrive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Go to Notifications.
- In the list, select OneDrive.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
- Optional: if you want to keep alerts but reduce noise, turn off Badges and disable Sounds instead.
After you change this, notifications should stop immediately. If not, rebooting the OneDrive client can help (quit and reopen the app).
Method 2: Turn off OneDrive menu bar notifications (if available)
Some OneDrive versions expose minor alert behavior via the menu bar or preferences. If you see additional prompt options, disable them there.
Rank #3
- Open OneDrive from the menu bar (cloud icon).
- Open Preferences.
- Look for options related to notifications, alerts, or update prompts.
- Disable those options and restart OneDrive if it doesn’t apply right away.
Stop OneDrive notifications on Android
Android notification control is both app-level and system-level. To be reliable, disable notifications at system settings and optionally inside OneDrive.
Method 1: Disable OneDrive notifications in Android settings
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Apps (or App management).
- Find and open OneDrive.
- Select Notifications.
- Turn off Allow notifications.
On many brands, you can also disable vibration or pop-ups here. If you don’t see a single master toggle, use notification categories instead.
Method 2: Control notification channels inside the OneDrive app
Android uses notification channels, meaning you can often stop only specific types (like backup alerts) while keeping others.
- Open the OneDrive app.
- Go to Me (or your profile icon).
- Open Settings.
- Find Notifications or Notification preferences.
- Turn off categories you don’t want (commonly: backup, sync, or upload/download alerts).
Because OneDrive app screens can vary by version, if you don’t find the toggle in-app, the Android notification channels screen usually still lets you disable the specific types.
Stop OneDrive notifications on iPhone and iPad
iOS and iPadOS also rely on app notification permissions. Once you disable them, OneDrive won’t show banners or alerts.
Method 1: Disable OneDrive notifications in iOS settings
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll to and tap OneDrive.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
If you don’t see OneDrive listed, it usually means the app hasn’t requested permission yet. Open OneDrive once, then check again in Settings.

If you want to keep notifications enabled but reduce what you see on lock screen, you can also adjust how they display.
- Go to Settings > OneDrive.
- Turn off Lock Screen if you don’t want alerts appearing there.
- Optionally disable Show Previews.
- Turn off Sounds if alerts are driving you nuts.
Stop OneDrive notifications caused by sync and backup prompts
Some notifications aren’t generic “app alerts.” They’re tied to backup, camera uploads, or sync state. If you disabled general notifications and still see prompts, check these features.
Stop “Files On-Demand” and sync prompts
OneDrive can prompt you about file availability and sync health. The goal is to reduce prompts by changing sync behavior.
- Open the OneDrive app (desktop or mobile).
- Go to Settings / Preferences.
- Look for Files On-Demand, Sync, or folder sync options.
- Disable unnecessary folder syncing or On-Demand prompts (wording varies by platform).
If OneDrive is continuously failing to sync, you may see persistent warnings regardless of your notification toggles. In that case, fix the underlying sync issue first.
Disable camera upload notifications (where applicable)
If your OneDrive account is set to back up photos or a camera roll, you can receive upload progress and completion alerts. Turn off that backup behavior if you don’t want those notifications.
- Open OneDrive on your phone.
- Go to Settings.
- Find Camera upload / Backup.
- Turn off camera upload or set it to only work on Wi-Fi (depending on what you prefer).
- Re-check notification categories afterward.
Stop browser-related prompts tied to OneDrive
If you’re seeing OneDrive-related prompts in the browser (often from Microsoft 365 or file-sharing workflows), those aren’t controlled by the OneDrive app notification settings. They’re typically permission prompts from the site or browser notifications settings.
- Check your browser’s Notifications permissions for Microsoft domains.
- Remove OneDrive or Microsoft notifications from the allowed list.
- If you use a Chromium browser, also check site settings for notifications and disable them for the relevant origin.

What to do when notifications keep coming back
OneDrive notifications can reappear after updates, permission refreshes, or when OneDrive resets its settings after a reinstall.
- Confirm the OS-level toggle is still off. After updates, some apps regain permissions.
- Re-check notification channels. Android notification categories can be re-enabled individually.
- Restart the OneDrive client. Quit/reopen OneDrive, then check if the prompt stops.
- Repair the sync client. If sync warnings are persistent, fix connectivity first (sign-in session, proxies, metered network settings).
- Reinstall carefully. Uninstall/reinstall can reset notification permissions—so you’ll have to re-disable them afterward.
Common mistakes that fail to stop OneDrive notifications
- Disabling only inside OneDrive but leaving Windows/macOS/Android/iOS notifications enabled.
- Turning off banners but leaving badges on (you still see counts and activity markers).
- Forgetting multiple accounts: if you’re signed into more than one OneDrive account, notifications can come from a different identity.
- Ignoring Focus Assist and thinking notifications are “turned off” when they’re just muted temporarily.
- Not fixing sync errors: failures can trigger high-priority warnings that you may want to see, even if you mute everything else.
Comparing options: full silence vs partial reduction
There’s no single best approach because some users still want critical sync failure alerts. Here’s how to choose.
| Goal | Best control | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Stop almost everything | OS-level app notification toggle (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS) | You may miss sync failure or security reminders |
| Reduce noise but keep important alerts | Notification channels/categories or badge/sound settings | May require more tuning across devices |
| Mute during work hours | Focus Assist / Focus modes | Notifications may still stack and appear later |
FAQs
Will disabling OneDrive notifications stop file syncing?
No. Turning off notifications only affects alerts. OneDrive sync behavior is controlled separately by sign-in status, network availability, and sync settings for specific folders.
I turned off notifications, but I still see sync warnings. What’s going on?
Some alerts can be categorized as high priority by the OS or tied to sync errors rather than normal app notifications. Check Windows Focus Assist, verify the OneDrive notification permission is off, and fix any underlying sync failure.
On Android, I disabled OneDrive notifications but uploads still trigger alerts.
That usually means a specific notification channel (for example, backup/upload progress) is still enabled. Check OneDrive’s in-app notification categories and the Android notification channel list for OneDrive.

Can I stop only certain OneDrive alerts instead of all of them?
Yes—on Android (notification channels) and sometimes inside OneDrive’s own Settings. On Windows and iOS/macOS, you can typically turn off all notifications, or reduce preview/badge/sound options rather than fully granular categories.
Do OneDrive notifications return after Windows updates?
They can. After updates, re-check the System > Notifications list for OneDrive and confirm it’s still set to Off.
Bottom Line
The most reliable way to stop OneDrive notifications is to disable OneDrive at the operating system level for your device, then optionally refine behavior inside the OneDrive app (especially on Android with notification channels).
If notifications keep coming back, treat it as a permissions or sync-health issue: verify toggles after updates, restart the OneDrive client, and fix any recurring sync errors that generate warnings.
