First check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to an unstable or insufficient connection to YouTube, while rendering lag or encoding lag point to local GPU or encoder load. A network-drops warning alone does not mean your Windows mini PC is too weak. Work through the matching checks below before buying hardware.
Identify what OBS is reporting
In OBS, check the Stats window while streaming or reviewing the affected session. Separate network dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag; they describe different problems and require different fixes. OBS says dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS may discard frames to avoid buffering, and too many can disconnect the stream. The OBS Project calls it “extremely unlikely” that OBS Studio itself causes dropped frames (OBS stream connection troubleshooting).

- Network dropped frames: investigate the connection between the mini PC and YouTube, including sustainable upload, Wi-Fi, network settings, and the route through your router or ISP.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to composite the scene in time, often because the GPU is busy.
- Encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough under the current load.
Save the OBS log for the affected session before changing settings. It gives you a record to compare after each test and is useful if you need help from OBS or your ISP.

Fix network dropped frames
Change one thing at a time and run a representative test stream after each change. Use the same resolution, frame rate, scene, audio, and movement you expect in the real stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube recommended encoder settings).

1. Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
A speed test’s peak upload result is not a guarantee of steady throughput to YouTube. OBS recommends starting around 75% of your total upload speed, a rule of thumb rather than a promise for a fluctuating connection (OBS stream connection troubleshooting). If drops continue, lower the video bitrate and test again; a lower, stable stream is preferable to a higher bitrate the connection cannot maintain.
For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommended ranges, not evidence that your particular connection can sustain any value in them. Choose within a range only when stable upload headroom supports it. YouTube’s settings also list other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs (YouTube recommended encoder settings).
For YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and prefer RTMPS. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video and up to 60 fps among its supported encoder settings. Match OBS and YouTube’s settings for the chosen stream rather than increasing bitrate or frame rate in isolation.

If the mini PC is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and repeat the same test. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A Cat6 cable is useful only if you need a cable to make this connection; it cannot correct ISP congestion, a bad router, or an unsuitable bitrate. If Ethernet is already in use, inspect the cable, adapter, switches, and extenders rather than assuming the PC needs replacement.

3. Check OBS network options on Windows
- Open OBS → Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, then test.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
- If drops persist, try IPv4 Only as a diagnostic. If it does not help, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 behavior.
These are connection diagnostics, not guaranteed fixes. Keep a note of each setting change so you can revert it if the stream gets worse.
4. Look for software interfering with the connection
OBS identifies VPNs, security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible causes of connection trouble. Examples of bundled utilities include Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software. Test suspected software carefully and change only one variable at a time.
- Disconnect from a VPN for a controlled test if your setup permits it.
- Check for network-prioritization or “boost” utilities that may be managing OBS traffic.
- Update the mini PC’s network adapter driver through the PC maker or adapter vendor’s supported channel.
- If a firewall or antivirus is confirmed to be interfering, add an OBS exception and turn the security software back on. Do not leave protection disabled as a workaround.
5. Check the router, modem, and ISP path
Restart the modem or router when appropriate, then test again. Inspect the cable, router, network adapter, switch, or extender in the connection path for faults. If the problem remains, contact your ISP with the times of the drops, the OBS log, and whether the issue occurred on Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi. That information is more useful than reporting only a single speed-test result.
6. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can lower bitrate during congestion and may help preserve continuity. OBS explicitly notes that it does not solve the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality. Treat it as a compromise when the connection fluctuates, not as a replacement for fixing the cause.

Fix rendering or encoding lag separately
If the network dropped-frames counter is not the problem and OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, focus on the local workload. These steps are not a cure for network drops.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate; try 30 fps if 60 fps is not working reliably.
- Simplify scenes and remove or limit expensive sources, filters, and browser sources.
- Check whether games, browsers, or other programs are using the GPU at the same time.
- Retest with the same representative content, then compare the OBS counters and log.
OBS’s encoding-performance guidance explains that GPU saturation can leave OBS without enough time to composite scenes (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting). Consider hardware changes only after identifying a local performance limit; network drops do not establish that the mini PC is underpowered.
Why YouTube stream health and OBS may not tell the same story
OBS’s network counter reflects its connection to the streaming service, while YouTube’s stream-health information can show what YouTube receives. Check both during a test. A representative test should include the audio and motion expected in the actual stream, and you should monitor YouTube stream health during the event. If OBS’s network drops rise, prioritize the connection steps; if local rendering or encoding lag rises, reduce the OBS workload.
