You can turn off notifications for an app in the iPhone Watch app, but that does not necessarily stop Apple Watch from automatically showing Now Playing. Apple’s documentation describes Now Playing as a media-control feature and explains one situation in which it can launch automatically; it does not establish that the prompt causes measurable battery drain or that suppressing an app’s notifications will prevent the interface from appearing.
First, distinguish notifications from the Now Playing interface
Now Playing lets you control media on Apple Watch, iPhone, and other Apple devices. Apple says it can launch automatically when you are near a HomePod playing audio. That explains one reason the interface may appear, but it does not show that a Now Playing notification is responsible for battery drain. Apple’s Now Playing guide describes the feature and its automatic launch behavior.

There are three separate things to consider: notifications from an app, automatic presentation of Now Playing, and broader battery settings. Changing one does not necessarily change the others.

- On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > Notifications.
- Select the relevant app and choose Notifications Off, if that option is available.
Apple documents this as app-level notification management. It can stop that app’s notifications from appearing on your watch, but Apple’s guide does not say this disables the Now Playing interface or its media controls. See Apple’s notification settings guide.

Check automatic Now Playing behavior on your watchOS version
If Now Playing appears automatically, check the settings available on your own Apple Watch and confirm their effect for your installed watchOS version using current Apple documentation. The available documentation does not establish a verified current menu path for an Auto-Launch Audio Apps control or confirm whether such a control affects automatic app launch, notifications, or both. Avoid assuming that changing an app’s notification setting will stop automatic presentation.
Use broader battery settings only if they fit the problem
Background App Refresh
Apple notes that Background App Refresh can use power and documents how to turn it off globally or for individual apps. This is a general battery-management step, not a confirmed Now Playing-specific fix, so it should not be treated as proof that Now Playing was draining the battery. Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode can extend battery life by changing other watch features, and notifications may be delayed. Consider that tradeoff before using it as a workaround; it does not identify or correct a Now Playing-specific cause. Apple outlines the setting and its effects in the same battery guide.

What you can conclude
- Use Watch > My Watch > Notifications to manage an app’s notifications.
- Do not assume that turning off notifications also disables automatic Now Playing presentation.
- The available Apple documentation does not establish that Now Playing prompts cause measurable battery drain, so no specific battery-life improvement can be promised.
