When mysqld disappears or repeatedly restarts under web traffic, the reliable fix is to identify the failure class first: memory pressure, a full disk or quota, InnoDB file or permission problems, an invalid size limit, exhausted file descriptors, or a query that reproducibly exposes a server fault. Then change only the setting or component that the evidence implicates.

Start by proving what actually failed
A browser error, a failed PHP request, and a crashed MySQL server are different events. A connection can fail because Apache’s application process timed out, because the network socket was refused, or because mysqld exited. Do not tune Apache until you know which boundary failed.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the server uptime
Run the MySQL administration client on the host:
mysqladmin version
The output includes the server version and uptime. If uptime has reset, the server restarted; if the command cannot connect while the service is supposedly running, check the service state and logs before assuming a crash. Record the time of the first failed request and compare it with the last successful uptime check.
Read the MySQL error log before changing configuration
MySQL’s own troubleshooting guidance says to determine exactly what crashes the system and inspect the server error log for the reason and any stack trace. The path depends on the package and distribution, so obtain the active error-log location from the loaded configuration or service status rather than assuming one fixed filename. Look around the precise minute of the outage for messages about out-of-memory conditions, disk writes, InnoDB recovery, permissions, assertion failures, or a fatal query.

If the log contains a stack trace, preserve it. A stack trace and the server version are substantially more useful for a bug report than the statement that Apache was running.
Correlate the crash with Apache and host pressure
Apache can increase concurrency and therefore the combined demand for RAM, swap, CPU, sockets, files, and database connections. That makes web traffic a plausible trigger, not proof of root cause. Build a timeline containing Apache request volume, MySQL errors, kernel messages, and service-manager actions.

Check for an out-of-memory kill
On a Linux host, inspect the kernel journal around the crash:
journalctl -k --since '15 minutes ago'
dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'out of memory|oom|killed process'
Also capture current memory and swap state:
free -h
swapon --show
An OOM message naming mysqld or another process establishes that the kernel terminated a process because available memory was exhausted. If the message names an Apache worker, Apache may have consumed the final available memory, but the remedy is still an aggregate-capacity problem: reduce the combined peak or add capacity. If there is no OOM evidence, do not “fix” the incident by blindly shrinking MySQL buffers.
Check disk blocks, inodes, and quotas
MySQL explicitly lists memory and disk subsystems among the first areas to investigate. Check both space and inode availability for the filesystems containing the data directory, redo logs, temporary directory, and error log:
df -h
df -i
A filesystem can have free gigabytes but no free inodes, preventing creation of a table, temporary file, or log. If quotas are enabled, inspect the account and filesystem quota with the distribution’s quota tool, for example:

quota -s
Compare the timestamp of a “no space left on device,” write, flush, or quota error with the restart. Delete or rotate only files you have identified as expendable; never remove database files simply to make the percentage in df look lower.
Inspect the service manager and limits
For a systemd installation, obtain the unit status and recent messages:
systemctl status mysqld
journalctl -u mysqld --since '30 minutes ago'
Some distributions name the unit mysql rather than mysqld; use the name installed on your host. A service that exits with a nonzero status, is repeatedly restarted, or is stopped by a timeout has a different failure path from a process killed by the kernel. Check the effective open-file limit as the service account sees it, not only the limit in your interactive shell. The shell command ulimit -n describes your current shell and may not describe systemd’s service.
Capture a reproducible query trigger
When the crash follows a particular request, temporarily enable MySQL’s general query log and compare the last statement recorded before the restart. MySQL’s manual notes that the final query is often the one that exposes the failure and states that about 95% of bugs are related to a particular query; that is a general statement in the Oracle MySQL 8.0 manual, not a measurement of your installation.

It can add substantial I/O and volume, especially on a busy web server. Capture the statement, connection context, server version, schema involved, and the exact request or job that caused it, then disable the log again. A minimal repeatable test case should reproduce the failure without Apache if possible; if it fails only at a particular concurrency, record that concurrency and the request mix.
Do not treat a slow query, a client timeout, or a rejected connection as a crash unless the server process actually exits or the error log records a fatal condition. Query optimization may improve capacity while leaving the underlying crash untouched, so first preserve the evidence that connects the statement to the process termination.

Verify InnoDB files, paths, permissions, and limits
InnoDB startup and runtime failures commonly look like an Apache problem because the first web request arrives immediately after a restart. Check the database and log directories named by the active option file.
Confirm the option file that is actually loaded
Package defaults and manually installed binaries can read different option files. Confirm the running binary, service unit, data directory, and error-log setting shown by the service configuration. A change made to an unused my.cnf has no effect and can create a misleading troubleshooting loop.
Check ownership and write access
The operating-system account running mysqld must be able to traverse the parent directories and read and write the data and log locations. Check directory ownership, mode bits, and any mandatory-access-control policy used by the distribution. A permission error during startup or a failed redo-log write is fixed by correcting the path or ownership, not by reducing Apache workers.
Check InnoDB size constraints
The innodb_data_file_path setting can impose hard limits. If the configured data files cannot grow to the required size, InnoDB can stop with a fatal error. Compare the configured limit with the actual data requirement and available filesystem capacity. Treat any change to InnoDB file layout as a database operation: take a verified backup, follow the version-specific procedure, and plan downtime where required.
Distinguish recovery from an ordinary startup failure
After an unclean shutdown, MySQL may be performing InnoDB crash recovery. Recovery messages are not evidence that the data files should be deleted. Wait for the documented recovery process to finish when the log shows progress, and investigate the first error if recovery stops.
Initialization failures and recovery failures require different procedures. The MySQL I/O troubleshooting guidance limits deletion advice to narrowly defined initialization situations and warns that ibdata, redo-log, and .ibd files contain database state. Deleting them as a generic “reset” is a destructive data-loss action, not a repair. If the server will not start, stop repeated restart attempts, copy the relevant logs, preserve the data directory, and use the recovery procedure for your MySQL release or obtain qualified database assistance.

Apply the remedy that matches the evidence
If the kernel killed a process for lack of memory
Measure peak, not idle, usage. Apache’s process or thread model, the number of simultaneous requests, PHP or other application workers, MySQL’s buffer allocations, connection count, and temporary tables all contribute to the peak. Reduce aggregate demand in small, reversible steps and retest with representative concurrency.
- Reduce Apache concurrency only after confirming that its workers are the largest controllable part of the peak.
- Reduce MySQL memory settings only when the error log and host data show memory pressure; document each change and observe the new peak.
- Keep enough swap for graceful pressure handling, while recognizing that swap activity can make requests slow rather than preventing every failure.
- Retest the same workload and record whether the OOM message disappears, rather than judging success from one quiet minute.
There is no universal Apache worker number or correct MySQL buffer-pool percentage for every host. Those values depend on installed RAM, workload, connection behavior, and other services.
If the disk, inode, or quota check failed
Identify which mount is full and which files are consuming it. Rotate logs according to the operating system’s policy, remove only verified temporary artifacts, increase the quota, or extend the filesystem. If the database directory is at its capacity limit, plan storage expansion or a controlled data move. A memory change cannot correct a failed database write.
If file descriptors are exhausted
Look for “too many open files” in the MySQL error log and compare the process’s effective limit with the number of client connections, table files, sockets, and log files it must hold. Raise the service limit only after confirming this failure class, then verify the effective limit from the running service. Also inspect for a connection or file leak; a higher ceiling can delay the crash without removing the cause.
If permissions or paths are wrong
Correct the data-directory and log-directory path, ownership, directory traversal permissions, or security policy identified in the log. Confirm that the service can create and write a test file only in an appropriate non-database location, and then restart once. Do not change memory or Apache settings for an access-denied error.
If one query reliably exposes the failure
Save the minimal schema, statement, parameters, server version, and execution conditions. Test it against a copy or staging instance first. Check whether the same statement fails with Apache stopped; if it does, the database path is reproducible independently of the web server. Keep the general log disabled after capture and use the minimal case for a vendor bug report or a targeted query fix.
Best Value
Set persistent systemd limits safely
Do not edit a package-owned unit file directly: upgrades can overwrite it. Create a drop-in for the installed unit:
systemctl edit mysqld
In the editor, add a [Service] section and set only the directives justified by your measurements, such as LimitNOFILE, LimitCore, or an environment variable required by the service. Use an integer limit derived from the observed workload and operating-system ceiling; the correct value is host-specific.
Save the drop-in, then apply it in the order required by MySQL’s systemd guidance:
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl restart mysqld
systemctl status mysqld
If the distribution uses the mysql unit, substitute that name consistently. Confirm the running service received the new limit and inspect the journal after restart. A drop-in persists across reboot and package upgrades, unlike an interactive ulimit change.
Compare fixes by failure class
| Diagnosed class | Typical corrective action | Reversibility and data risk | Effect on Apache capacity | Persistence and observability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host memory pressure or OOM kill | Reduce measured aggregate Apache/MySQL peak or add capacity | Configuration reductions are reversible; changing capacity requires planning; data files are not altered | Reducing Apache concurrency lowers peak capacity; reducing MySQL memory can affect database throughput | Make a documented configuration change and verify kernel logs and peak memory under the same workload |
| Disk, inode, or quota exhaustion | Free or add the affected storage, rotate identified logs, or raise the quota | Removing the wrong file can damage the database; storage expansion is low risk when planned | Apache may continue serving until database writes fail; storage repair restores both services’ headroom | Filesystem and quota checks remain visible after reboot; repeat df, inode, and quota checks |
| Open-file limit exhaustion | Correct leaks or raise the systemd service limit after measuring demand | A drop-in is reversible; an excessive limit can hide a leak | Does not directly change Apache capacity unless Apache shares the same host pressure | Drop-ins persist; verify the effective limit and monitor “too many open files” messages |
| InnoDB permission, path, or size-limit error | Repair ownership/path/security settings or address the configured hard limit | Path and ownership fixes are generally reversible; file-layout changes require backups and careful procedure | Apache remains unchanged; requests recover when the database can read and write its files | Startup and error logs show whether the same filesystem error returns |
| Reproducible query or server defect | Capture a minimal test case, then fix the query or pursue a version-specific bug report | Query changes are reversible when version-controlled; avoid destructive recovery actions | May reduce request failures without changing worker limits | Retest with the captured statement and keep diagnostic logging temporary |
Verify the repair instead of declaring victory after one restart
- Record the original error-log message, uptime, host pressure, and service status.
- Apply one evidence-based change so that its effect can be distinguished from other changes.
- Reload or restart the affected service using the correct unit name, then confirm it remains active.
- Run the same request or minimal query that previously triggered the failure.
- Repeat under representative Apache concurrency, watching memory, swap, disk, inode, quota, open-file usage, and MySQL error messages.
- Check the logs after the test window for delayed recovery errors or another restart.
- Keep the configuration change and its measured reason in your operations record; remove temporary general-query logging and diagnostic verbosity.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Blaming Apache from timing alone: web traffic may expose a database defect, full filesystem, or limit that would fail under any client.
- Reading only the application log: the MySQL error log, kernel journal, and service-manager journal identify different failure layers.
- Changing several memory settings at once: you lose the ability to tell which change helped and may create a new performance problem.
- Using an interactive shell limit:
ulimitin your shell does not automatically alter a systemd-managed service. - Editing the vendor unit: package updates can erase the change; use a systemd drop-in.
- Deleting InnoDB files: database files contain state. Deletion is not a generic startup fix and can make recovery impossible.
- Leaving the general log enabled: diagnostic logging can add I/O and storage pressure on a busy host.
- Assuming a universal tuning ratio: no single Apache worker cap or MySQL buffer percentage is established for every machine.
A practical decision checklist
- Did
mysqladmin versionshow that the server uptime reset? - Does the MySQL error log identify a fatal condition or stack trace?
- Did the kernel report an OOM kill at the same time?
- Were blocks, inodes, or quotas exhausted on any relevant filesystem?
- Can the service account read and write every configured InnoDB and log path?
- Does
innodb_data_file_pathimpose a hard limit that the workload reached? - Does the service journal show a restart loop, timeout, or “too many open files” error?
- Can the final general-log query reproduce the failure in a controlled test?
- Was the remedy applied in the correct layer and verified under the original workload?
The shortest path to a stable Apache-and-MySQL host is disciplined correlation: establish that mysqld actually died, identify the failure class in the database and host logs, make one matching change, and retest. Apache concurrency matters when it raises aggregate demand, but the logs—not the presence of Apache—determine which fix is safe.
