How to Stop Meta Quest Link From Opening on Startup?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Meta Quest Link is designed to start quickly when you’re ready to play, but auto-launch on every Windows boot gets annoying fast. If it’s opening before you even plug in your headset, you can stop it.

This guide covers the practical places Quest Link can be triggered on startup: in-app settings, Windows Startup Apps, background services, and Task Scheduler. Follow the steps in order—most cases are solved in the first two sections.

Why Meta Quest Link opens on startup

There are a few common causes. Quest Link can be configured to auto-start inside the Meta Quest Link / Oculus software, Windows can be launching it via Startup Apps, and scheduled tasks or services can trigger the launcher when specific devices or conditions appear.

If you’ve recently updated the Meta software, installed new graphics drivers, or reinstalled the app, the startup behavior can change without you noticing.

What to check first (fast, low-risk)

Start with the easiest checks before you dig into deeper Windows settings.

  • Unplug the headset and link cable (if you use Link), then reboot. If it only starts when the headset is connected, you’re likely dealing with device-triggered auto-launch.
  • Sign out and back in if you use multiple Windows user accounts. Startup items can be per-user.
  • Restart the PC after each change. Otherwise, you can’t tell which fix actually worked.

Disable Meta Quest Link auto-start in the Meta Quest Link app

In many setups, Quest Link has an auto-start toggle. The wording can vary slightly depending on software version, but it’s usually under a general settings area.

  1. Open Meta Quest Link (or the Oculus/Meta desktop app, depending on what you see).
  2. Go to Settings (look for a gear icon).
  3. Find an option like Start Quest Link automatically, Auto-launch, or Launch on startup.
  4. Turn it Off.
  5. Close the app fully, then restart Windows.

If you don’t see any auto-start option inside the app, don’t worry—Windows-level startup and scheduled tasks are the next most common causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn off startup launch from Windows Settings

Windows can start Quest Link automatically using Startup Apps. Disabling it here is usually decisive.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Startup apps tab.
  3. Search for entries such as Meta Quest Link, Oculus, OVRServer, or any launcher referencing Meta/Oculus.
  4. For each relevant item, click it and select Disable.
  5. Restart your PC and verify Quest Link no longer opens.

On some systems, there may be multiple related entries. If you’re unsure, disable them one by one, reboot, and confirm.

Disable Oculus/Meta Quest services and background tasks

Some background components (commonly associated with the Oculus runtime) may keep a launcher alive even after you disable Startup Apps. Disabling the most relevant services can stop the auto-launch behavior.

Important: Don’t disable random system services. Only change ones clearly tied to Oculus/Meta Quest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services list, look for services with names like Oculus, OVR, or Meta Quest.
  3. Right-click the relevant service and choose Properties.
  4. Set Startup type to Disabled (or Manual if Disabled breaks something).
  5. Click Apply, then Stop the service if it’s currently running.
  6. Restart Windows and check whether Meta Quest Link still opens.

If you set a service to Disabled and your Link connection stops working when you intentionally start it, switch that service back to Manual and rely on Startup Apps + Task Scheduler instead.

Check Task Scheduler for Quest Link-related triggers

Task Scheduler is one of the most common reasons a launcher returns after you think you fixed startup. Scheduled tasks can fire on logon, on device change, or at intervals.

  1. Press Win, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
  2. In the left panel, click Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Look through tasks for names containing Oculus, Meta, OVR, or Quest.
  4. Also click View → Sort by → Name to make it easier to spot related tasks.
  5. For any suspicious or Quest-related task, right-click → Disable.
  6. Restart Windows and confirm the app no longer launches.

If you see tasks named like “Oculus VR Runtime” or “OVR…”, disable them one at a time to avoid breaking VR runtime features you still want.

Confirm no duplicate launcher is being started

Sometimes what looks like Quest Link opening on startup is actually a second component launching it (or an older installer leaving a helper executable behind). Confirm what’s starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. When the PC boots, open Task Manager.
  2. Go to the Processes tab.
  3. Look for processes like OVRServer, OVRRedir, OVR helpers, or a Meta/Oculus desktop launcher.
  4. Right-click the process → choose Open file location.
  5. Confirm the executable path points to the expected Meta/Oculus installation folder (not an old leftover folder under a temporary directory).

If you find an unexpected path, you may need to update or repair the Meta Quest Link installation so only one launcher is responsible.

Troubleshooting: Link still opens after changes

If Quest Link keeps launching after disabling Startup Apps, and disabling relevant services and tasks, the cause is usually a device-triggered event or an incomplete configuration reset.

1) Check if the headset connection triggers the launch

Boot the PC with the headset unplugged. Then plug in the headset (and/or the link cable) after Windows is fully up. If Link starts immediately, you’re dealing with device-triggered auto-launch.

  1. Open Device Manager (Win → search “Device Manager”).
  2. Find the Oculus/Meta device entry under the likely category (commonly USB or Universal Serial Bus controllers).
  3. Unplug/replug and see which entry appears or changes.
  4. Return to Task Scheduler and look for tasks triggered on device changes or logon.

2) Repair or reinstall Meta Quest Link

If configuration files got corrupted (common after major updates), a repair can remove the “always start” flag.

  1. Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Meta Quest Link (or the Oculus/Meta desktop software entry).
  3. Select Modify or Repair (if available).
  4. If repair doesn’t help, uninstall and reinstall the current version from the Meta website/launcher.

After reinstalling, immediately check the in-app auto-start setting again and disable Startup Apps.

3) Look for multiple Windows accounts

Startup settings can be per-user. If you log into a different account than the one you configured, it can appear “re-broken.”

  1. Confirm you’re signed into the account where you disabled Startup Apps and scheduled tasks.
  2. If needed, repeat the Startup Apps and Task Scheduler checks for that account.

4) Confirm you’re not using a third-party “helper”

Some headset management tools, capture overlays, or VR utilities can spawn Quest Link. Check your recently installed apps and utilities.

  1. In Task Manager, look at startup-related processes and their command lines (right-click process → Go to details).
  2. Disable any non-essential VR utilities from Startup Apps and reboot.

FAQs

Will disabling Quest Link startup affect Air Link or Virtual Desktop?

Disabling Quest Link auto-start only controls whether the desktop launcher runs on boot. Your ability to connect via Air Link depends on the headset-side settings and the specific method you use.

What if I disable a service and my Link connection fails?

Re-enable the service or set its Startup type back to Manual. Then focus on Startup Apps and Task Scheduler so the runtime only starts when you intentionally run Quest Link.

How do I know which exact task is launching it?

In Task Scheduler, open the task properties for any Quest-related entry and check the Triggers tab. Look for triggers like At log on, On an event, or device-related triggers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does this differ between iPhone and Android?

No—this is a Windows startup behavior issue, not a phone-specific setting. Your iPhone or Android device may pair with the headset, but Windows still controls whether the desktop Quest Link launcher starts.

Can Windows updates re-enable startup items?

Yes. Updates can restore default app startup behavior. If it returns, re-check the Startup apps tab and the Task Scheduler library for Quest-related entries.

Final Thoughts

For most people, stopping Meta Quest Link from opening on startup comes down to two moves: disable it in Windows Startup apps and turn off any scheduled Quest-related tasks. If it still launches, check Meta/Oculus runtime services and confirm the headset isn’t triggering a device-based startup event.

Make one change at a time and reboot to verify. Once you find the exact trigger, keeping Quest Link manual is quick and reliable.
