To stop every Instagram alert on an iPhone, turn off Allow Notifications for Instagram in the iPhone Settings app. The switch is on the iPhone itself, so it silences Instagram on that device. If you only want to cut back on certain Instagram alerts and keep others, use Instagram’s own notification controls instead.
The four steps to turn off all Instagram notifications
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Instagram, then tap Notifications.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
Once the switch is off, Instagram cannot send banners, sounds, or badges to that iPhone. This is a device-level setting. It does not delete your account, your messages, or your content, and Apple’s guidance does not describe it as doing so.
Use the other menu path if yours looks different
Apple’s iPhone User Guide also documents a route through Settings > Notifications > Instagram. Menu layouts shift between iOS versions, so if the path above does not match what you see, follow the one that appears on your screen. If you want to stop certain kinds of activity but still receive others, the iPhone switch is too blunt. Instagram’s Help Center page on managing push notifications says you can pause push notifications and adjust them by category, including categories tied to interactions and posts. Category names and what is available can vary, including by account type. The official page is currently served in Russian (Instagram Help Center, Manage push notifications), so the labels you see in the English app may differ from anything described here. Look for the notification options inside Instagram’s settings and check each category you want to change.
Softer options on the iPhone
If you do not want to silence Instagram completely, the iPhone’s notification settings for the app can change how alerts reach you without turning them off. According to Apple, these controls can adjust:

Focus is a related option. It delays notifications during the times you choose, which reduces interruptions without removing Instagram from your device. These controls and their exact names depend on your iOS version and on which options Apple offers for your device.

Common questions when alerts still arrive
- If Instagram alerts continue after you turn off Allow Notifications, check whether you changed the setting on a different device. Each iPhone has its own switch.
- If you turned off Allow Notifications but later want alerts back, return to the same Instagram notification screen and turn the switch on again.
- If you want to change only some categories, avoid the iPhone switch and use Instagram’s category controls described above.
The Bottom Line
For a complete stop on one iPhone, use Settings > Apps > Instagram > Notifications and turn off Allow Notifications. To keep some alerts, use Instagram’s category settings or the softer iPhone controls.
