If the voice only describes scenes while a show or movie plays, check Audio description instead; that is a separate feature.
First identify which voice you are hearing
- Menus and controls are spoken aloud: TalkBack, Google TV’s screen reader, is the likely cause. It provides spoken feedback as you navigate the interface. See Google TV’s accessibility settings guide and Google’s description of TalkBack.
- Only a program’s visual action is narrated: check Audio description. It describes visual events in supported video content; availability depends on the video and provider. See Google’s Android accessibility overview.
Turn off TalkBack on Google TV
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Under Services, select TalkBack.
- Switch TalkBack off.
The precise menu layout can differ between devices. If you do not see the same labels, open the device’s Accessibility settings and look for TalkBack or a screen-reader option. On some Android TV devices, Google documents the path as Settings > Device Preferences > Accessibility > TalkBack; available features vary by model and Android version. Stop TalkBack from turning on again
Google TV’s accessibility shortcut can turn on TalkBack. When the shortcut is enabled, holding the remote’s Back and Down buttons together for three seconds activates it. If TalkBack returns after you turn it off, that button combination may be triggering the shortcut.
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Check Enable accessibility shortcut and the selected Shortcut service.
- If the shortcut is being activated accidentally, disable it or change the service assigned to it.
The shortcut is useful for people who rely on accessibility features, so change it only if it is being triggered unintentionally. Google documents the shortcut and its default TalkBack behavior in its Google TV accessibility guide.

Turn off narration during a movie or show
When narration describes visual events in a program rather than reading interface labels, TalkBack is not necessarily the cause. Check the TV’s Accessibility settings for Audio description, and look in the video app’s playback or accessibility controls for an audio-description option. On Android TV, Google lists Audio description under Settings > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Audio description, though paths vary by device. The option may be available only for particular titles or providers. See Google’s Android TV accessibility guide and Google’s accessibility overview.
Turning off TalkBack stops spoken interface feedback; it does not necessarily remove narration included in a program’s audio-description track. Use the device or app’s audio-description controls for that.

If the setting is missing or the voice continues
- Use the device’s Accessibility menu rather than relying on one exact menu layout; names and available features vary across Android TV versions and TV models.
- Check whether the voice occurs while navigating or only during video playback, then adjust TalkBack or Audio description accordingly.
- If TalkBack returns after being switched off, inspect the accessibility shortcut and whether its remote-button combination is being pressed.
