To stop Gmail from automatically loading external images—including many email tracking pixels—turn on Ask before displaying external images. The setting makes Gmail wait for you to choose whether to show images in a message. It can reduce automatic image-based tracking, but it does not block every way a sender might detect an email open.
Turn off automatic image loading in Gmail
Gmail displays images automatically by default. You can change that behavior in the settings for the device you use:
On a computer
- Open Gmail and select Settings.
- Select See all settings.
- In the Images section, choose Ask before displaying external images.
- Save your changes.
Google’s desktop instructions are at Turn images on or off in Gmail.
On Android
- Open the Gmail menu and go to Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Under Data usage, open Images.
- Select Ask before showing.
See Google’s Android instructions.
On iPhone or iPad
- In the Gmail app, open Menu, then Settings.
- Under Inbox, open Email preferences, then Images.
- Choose Ask before displaying external images.
See Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
What changes when you ask before displaying images?
External images are not shown automatically. When a message contains images you want to see, use the message’s display-images control to load them. The control’s wording can vary by app and language. This gives you more control over whether images are requested, though legitimate logos, photos, and other message content may remain hidden until you choose to show them.

There are two practical options:
| Setting | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Display external images automatically | Images appear without an extra action, but remote images may load when you open a message. |
| Ask before displaying external images | Images wait until you choose to display them; some message imagery may not appear at first. |
Does this block email tracking pixels?
It can prevent Gmail from automatically loading many tracking pixels that are delivered as external images. But it is not a universal tracker blocker. Google says Gmail proxies images and that senders cannot use image loading to learn your computer or location or to set or read browser cookies. Google also cautions that senders may sometimes know whether you opened an email that contains an image. The setting therefore limits automatic external-image loading; it does not guarantee that a sender cannot learn anything about an open through other means.

If an email looks incomplete and you trust its sender, use the message’s display-images option when you need to see its images. Leave images hidden when you do not need them. The choice is a convenience trade-off: automatic display makes messages look as intended with no extra step, while asking first lets you decide when external images load.
