Google has confirmed that Pixel HiLight will gain more capabilities over time, including message notifications from favorite contacts. A September 2026 report also points to possible messaging support and additional colors in Android 17 beta code, but those details are not confirmed as a public release. What new features are coming to Pixel HiLight?
Google says HiLight will get more capabilities over time and names message notifications from favorite contacts as one example. Its August 13, 2026 announcement does not specify when the feature will arrive or which messaging apps it will support. Google’s Pixel 11 announcement is a statement of future plans, not confirmation that the feature is already available.

Separately, Tech Advisor reported on September 29, 2026 that it found indications of messaging support and more colors in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 code. The report described four proposed additional colors; a screenshot led it to infer possible blue, red, and green shades, but the exact palette is not an independently confirmed Google specification. Treat both the color changes and beta messaging evidence as reports, not released features. Tech Advisor’s beta-code report also said the messaging apps were unclear.

Google has signaled that message notifications from favorite contacts are planned, but has not identified participating apps or announced availability. Today, Google documents HiLight for Gemini activity cues and calls from favorite contacts—not message notifications. For calls, the supported apps listed in Google’s instructions are Phone by Google and WhatsApp. Google’s HiLight support page describes the currently documented behavior.

When will the HiLight update arrive?
Google has not announced a release date for message notifications or a color expansion. Tech Advisor suggested a regular firmware update later in 2026 as a possibility, but that is speculation, not a promised rollout. The Android 17 QPR2 beta evidence does not by itself establish when or whether those changes will reach general users; check Google’s current release notes for confirmation.
What Pixel HiLight does now
HiLight uses the phone’s light-based hardware to show visual patterns when a supported Pixel is face down. Google documents patterns for Gemini listening, thinking, or responding, plus customizable color cues for calls from favorite contacts. The documented palette is teal, yellow, pink, purple, and white. The report of additional colors is separate and remains unconfirmed.

Turn on HiLight and choose its functions
- Open Settings > System > HiLight.
- Turn on HiLight, then separately enable the Gemini and/or calls options you want.
- To assign a color to a favorite contact, use the Contacts app; Google says it should be updated to the latest version.
HiLight is enabled by default with modes such as Flip to Shhh, Bedtime, or Do Not Disturb. You can change its behavior for those modes, but that can also affect ring or vibration notifications while a mode is active. If flash notifications are enabled, HiLight will not display for incoming calls.
Which Pixel phones have HiLight?
Google lists HiLight support on Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It is built into these supported phones; a generic case or separate notification accessory does not add the feature. Model availability and pricing vary by region and date, and Google’s feature documentation does not establish support on other phones.
