To stop File Explorer’s navigation pane from automatically expanding to the folder you open, turn off Expand to open folder in File Explorer Options. Open Options, choose the View tab, and clear the checkbox. The exact route can vary by Windows build.
Turn off automatic folder expansion

This setting controls whether the navigation tree expands to show the folder opened in the main pane. Microsoft Community guidance describes it in connection with folders opened from Quick access; turning it off is the relevant first step when the tree keeps following the folder you open. If Quick access folders still behave unexpectedly
Some Windows 11 users have reported that navigation-pane expansion does not behave consistently for Quick access folders. Reports discuss versions 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2, but they do not establish a confirmed product-wide defect, its cause, or whether a later update resolved it. As a result, clearing the checkbox may not change every Quick access case. Microsoft Q&A report and Microsoft Tech Community discussion
Navigate without relying on the tree following you
The navigation pane is an access tree for folders and drives, and can also show libraries, pinned folders, and network locations. You can leave automatic expansion off and still use the pane to open places directly. Keyboard users can focus the pane, move through its locations with the arrow keys, and press Enter to open a selection in the content pane. When this is a different File Explorer problem
If File Explorer will not open or start at all, that is a broader issue than the navigation tree expanding unexpectedly. Microsoft’s separate troubleshooting steps address failure to open or start; they are not established fixes for this specific pane behavior. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide
