Set the image you want Facebook to use in your page’s og:image metadata, then check the metadata Facebook can actually read for the exact URL you’re sharing. If the page has competing image tags, the wrong tag comes first, or Facebook cannot retrieve the page or image, changing what you see in a browser may not fix the preview. After correcting the page, use Meta’s Sharing Debugger to inspect and refresh its scrape.
Why Facebook may show the wrong link image
Facebook’s link preview is based on information a crawler reads from the shared page. The Open Graph protocol defines og:image as the representative image for a page and places it among four basic properties: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. These values belong in the page’s HTML head. See the Open Graph protocol.

A preview can be wrong when the served HTML contains an unintended image, multiple image values compete, the crawler cannot retrieve the page or image, or Facebook is still showing previously scraped information. The image displayed in your browser is not proof that the crawler received the same metadata.
Fix the image in the page metadata
1. Check the exact URL being shared
Copy the full link, including its path and any query string, and inspect that page rather than a similar page or the site homepage. Check that its og:url identifies the intended canonical page. The protocol describes og:url as the permanent graph identifier for the object.

2. Inspect every delivered og:image value
Look at the HTML head actually returned for the URL. Find every og:image tag and note its order. Multiple values are allowed for array properties in Open Graph; when values conflict, the protocol says the first tag from top to bottom is preferred. Put the intended image first or remove unintended duplicates.

3. Confirm the crawler can retrieve the page and image
Open the image URL directly and check that it is publicly retrievable, not behind a login or blocked by access controls. Also verify that the page response contains the intended metadata. If a browser shows the desired image but a debugger reports another value or none, investigate whether the server-delivered HTML differs from browser-rendered content or whether server rules prevent crawler access.
Refresh and verify Facebook’s scraped preview
- Publish the corrected metadata on the page.
- Open Meta’s Sharing Debugger and submit the exact URL that is shared. Check the debugger’s current interface for its labels and access requirements.
- Review the values the debugger reports, especially the selected image and canonical URL.
- If it still shows old information, request a fresh scrape, then inspect the reported values again.
A refresh is a verification step, not a replacement for fixing incorrect metadata. If the debugger continues to read an unintended value, return to the delivered HTML and correct its source.
