To stop the Windows Copilot app from launching when you sign in, open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch Copilot off. If it is not listed, check Task Manager and the Startup folders. These steps affect sign-in startup, not Copilot features inside Microsoft 365 apps.
Turn off Copilot in Windows startup settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Find Copilot and set its switch to Off.
Microsoft Support says to set an app’s toggle to Off to prevent it from starting automatically. This option applies to apps registered with Windows as startup tasks; the list may not include every app instance. See Microsoft’s Configure Startup applications in Windows.

If Copilot does not appear in the startup list
Check Task Manager
- Right-click Start and open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- If Copilot appears, select it and choose Disable.
Inspect the Startup folders
Microsoft recommends checking the Startup folder when an app is missing from the startup list. Press Win+R, enter shell:startup, and check for a Copilot shortcut. To inspect shortcuts that apply to all users, press Win+R again and enter shell:common startup. Remove a Copilot shortcut if one is present. The folder check is a fallback, not evidence that every Copilot installation uses a startup shortcut.

Tell automatic startup apart from a shortcut launch
If Copilot opens only after you press a key, rather than when you sign in, you may be triggering a launch shortcut. Microsoft documents the Copilot key and Windows key+C as ways to open the Copilot app. The app’s shortcut behavior can be configured under Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts. Uninstall the Copilot app if you want it removed
Disabling startup prevents the app from launching automatically; it does not remove the app. To uninstall it, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Copilot, select More options (…) > Uninstall, and confirm. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows 11 app removal instructions.
Windows startup settings do not turn off Microsoft 365 Copilot
Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps have separate controls. Changing the Windows startup switch does not disable those features. Microsoft also warns that changing account privacy settings to disable Copilot in Office can turn off other connected experiences. Review Microsoft’s Copilot privacy controls for Microsoft 365 apps before changing account-wide settings.

Names and available controls can vary by Windows build, app packaging, device configuration, and organizational management.
