If you’re broadcasting, check OBS’s dropped-frame count and connection indicator; if you’re watching, test Auto quality, another stream, and another device or network. The right fix depends on which part of the path is struggling.
Find out whether you are broadcasting or watching
A live stream can buffer because of the broadcaster’s upload connection or encoder, delivery between the streaming platform and viewer, the viewer’s home network or ISP, or the viewer’s device. One viewer having trouble does not by itself prove that the broadcaster’s stream is faulty.
- If you are broadcasting: check the stream’s connection and encoder health while the problem is happening.
- If you are watching: compare playback across streams, quality settings, devices, and networks.
These comparisons help narrow down the cause, but they are diagnostic clues rather than conclusive proof. Twitch’s official troubleshooting guidance describes possible issues at multiple points between broadcaster and viewer.
If you are broadcasting: diagnose the outgoing stream
1. Check OBS dropped frames and connection status
In OBS, watch the dropped-frame count and connection indicator while streaming. OBS says that an increasing “Dropped frames” counter together with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to help avoid buffering and keep the stream playing; a rising count is therefore a useful signal to investigate the connection, not just a reason to change settings at random. See the OBS dropped frames guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
Check your upload performance, not your download speed. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload capacity equal to your configured stream bitrate plus 30%; its example is a 6 Mbps stream bitrate with at least 8 Mbps upload. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: speed-test results can vary, and other devices or applications using upload bandwidth reduce what is available to your stream. See Twitch’s broadcast health FAQ.
Run a speed test under conditions similar to your broadcast and consider competing upload use on your network. YouTube likewise recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health; its encoder setup guidance recommends a representative test with audio and movement similar to the actual event, followed by monitoring stream-health messages during the stream.

3. Reduce the stream load if the connection cannot sustain it
If the connection cannot reliably carry the current bitrate, lower the video bitrate. If needed, also reduce resolution or frame rate so the output better fits both stable upload capacity and the destination platform’s current recommendations. These settings interact: the right combination depends on your connection, computer hardware, encoder, and platform. Check the platform’s current guidance rather than treating one bitrate or resolution as suitable for every stream. Twitch discusses balancing these factors in its broadcasting guidelines; OBS has separate encoding-performance troubleshooting for cases where the computer or encoder is struggling.
4. Test the network path
If the broadcaster is on Wi-Fi, try connecting the streaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet. This is a useful comparison, not proof that Wi-Fi is always the cause. If upload performance remains inadequate, restarting the router or contacting your ISP may help investigate the connection. Cloudflare’s live-streaming overview discusses these network checks.

5. Test before the event and watch stream health
Run a test stream before an important broadcast using movement and audio similar to the real event. During the event, keep an eye on OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and on the platform’s stream-health messages. Testing helps reveal problems under representative conditions, but a short test cannot guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout a longer stream.
If you are watching: narrow down the playback problem
Try Auto quality, then compare another stream
Choose Auto quality where it is available. Twitch says Auto adjusts playback quality to current network conditions; manually forcing a quality your connection cannot sustain can make playback worse. Then try another live stream. If just one stream buffers, the broadcaster’s upload or encoder may be involved; if several streams or services buffer, investigate your device, home network, ISP, or service delivery as well. These comparisons point toward possibilities but do not establish a cause on their own. See Twitch’s playback troubleshooting.

Compare another device or connection
Try playback on another device or network if available. If you are watching over mobile data, check whether your carrier or plan limits video streaming; Twitch notes that mobile carrier limits can affect playback. YouTube recommends trying Wi-Fi when playback is problematic over a mobile network. Its viewer troubleshooting page recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is a YouTube recommendation, not a universal threshold for every service, resolution, or network condition.

Common symptoms and what to try
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise and its connection indicator turns yellow or red | Connection to the streaming service or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain | Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity, reduce stream load if needed, and test Ethernet if using Wi-Fi. |
| OBS connection looks healthy, but the stream still performs poorly | Encoding or rendering performance, among other possibilities | Check OBS encoding-performance guidance and investigate system or encoder load. |
| One live stream buffers but other streams play normally | That broadcaster’s upload or encoder may be involved | Compare another stream and playback quality; the comparison is a clue, not proof. |
| Several streams or services buffer on one device or network | Viewer device, home network, ISP, or service delivery | Try another device or connection, use Auto quality, and compare results. |
| Playback fails mainly over mobile data | Mobile network conditions or carrier video restrictions | Check your plan’s limits and compare playback over Wi-Fi. |
