To reduce buffering on an Amazon Fire TV Stick, first check its network status, then restart the Fire TV and your network equipment, and test whether the problem affects other devices. These steps can help isolate a weak Wi-Fi link or a broader connection problem, but no single fix guarantees uninterrupted playback.
Check the Fire TV’s connection first
Use the device’s network diagnostics before changing settings or buying equipment. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Network Status instructions describe checks for the connection between the Fire TV and router, as well as the router’s connection to the internet. The tool may also offer recommendations.

- On the Fire TV, open Settings > Network.
- Press the Play/Pause button to open Network Status. If an error screen appears, choose Network Diagnostics.
- Follow the on-screen recommendations. If your model offers a speed test or advanced network details, check those too; availability varies by device.
This can help distinguish a problem connecting to the router from one between the router and the internet. It does not, by itself, establish why a particular stream is buffering.

Restart the Fire TV
Unplug its power, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it. Let the device restart and try playback again.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi
If the connection still seems unstable, turn Wi-Fi off and back on. If that does not help, forget the saved network and reconnect using its password. This is useful if the Fire TV is having trouble maintaining its connection; it will not fix an internet outage.
Restart the modem and router
Unplug both devices for one minute. Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to come online; then reconnect the router and let it finish connecting before testing the Fire TV. Amazon recommends this order in its connection troubleshooting steps.

Find out whether the issue is Wi-Fi coverage or a wider outage
Check another phone, computer, or streaming device on the same network. If several devices cannot get online, the problem may be with the network or an outage rather than the Fire TV alone. If other devices work while the Fire TV struggles, use Network Status to narrow down the connection path.
When practical, move the Fire TV and router closer together and test again. A weak or obstructed wireless connection can be a coverage issue; improving placement costs nothing and is a better first test than replacing equipment.

Consider Ethernet or a Wi-Fi upgrade only when the evidence points there
Test a wired connection
Ethernet can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem, if your Fire TV model supports a wired connection. Some devices need an adapter. Check Amazon’s Ethernet guidance for Fire TV setup and confirm compatibility with your exact model before buying an adapter. A wired test can isolate Wi-Fi as a possible cause; it is not a promise of better playback.
Address persistent coverage problems
If diagnostics and placement tests point to weak coverage across a larger home, Amazon suggests considering a mesh Wi-Fi system for whole-home coverage. For a compatible Fire TV device, Amazon also suggests a router capable of Wi-Fi 6E or higher. These are conditional options for coverage or compatibility needs, not guaranteed cures for buffering. Check your Fire TV model and home network before upgrading.

Keep setup advice separate from buffering fixes
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup guide says to use the supplied power adapter plugged into a wall outlet, and to use the HDMI extender when needed to reach the TV’s port. Those are setup recommendations; the guide does not identify them as general fixes for buffering.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort
If diagnostics, restarts, Wi-Fi reconnection, and network checks have not resolved the issue, Amazon lists a factory reset as a later troubleshooting step. Because a reset is disruptive, do not begin with it. Consult Amazon’s Fire TV troubleshooting guidance for the reset procedure and consequences before proceeding.
