If Now Playing or another audio app takes over your Apple Watch screen, first identify when it appears. If it returns after the watch wakes, turn off Return to App for that app. If it appears when playback starts, look for Auto-Launch Audio Apps in watch settings; its location can vary by watchOS version.
Choose the setting that matches the trigger
| When the app appears | Setting to check | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| After the watch wakes from sleep | Return to Clock / Return to App | Whether a particular app resumes where you left off. |
| When music or a podcast starts playing | Auto-Launch Audio Apps | Whether an audio screen opens automatically when playback begins. The setting’s location depends on watchOS. |
| When you are near a HomePod playing audio | Now Playing behavior | Apple documents automatic Now Playing launch in this situation. |
Stop an app from returning after the watch wakes
Apple documents this per-app control in its watchOS 27 display settings guide. On Apple Watch, open Settings > General > Return to Clock, scroll to the app, select it, and turn off Return to App. You can also use the paired iPhone: open the Watch app, then go to My Watch > General > Return to Clock.

This affects resuming the selected app after the watch sleeps; it is not the same as preventing an audio screen from appearing when playback starts. Apple gives Music, Now Playing, and Podcasts as examples of apps this setting can affect.
Stop the audio screen appearing when playback starts
In the watch’s Settings, look for Auto-Launch Audio Apps and turn it off if the option is available. The exact location is not confirmed in Apple’s currently indexed watchOS 27 guide. Older directions place it under General > Wake Screen; later user reports point to General > Auto-Launch or Display & Brightness. These reports are not definitive Apple documentation, so use the labels shown on your installed watchOS rather than relying on one older path. The historical route appears in an Apple Support Communities tips collection, and a 2023 community thread describes another location.

Turning off automatic launch changes whether the playback screen opens on its own; it does not, by itself, mean playback has stopped or that Bluetooth has been disabled.
Check whether a HomePod is triggering Now Playing
If the screen appears while you are near a HomePod that is playing audio, that may be the trigger. Apple says Now Playing can launch automatically in that situation in its Now Playing guide. This is a separate behavior from resuming an app after the watch wakes.

Open playback controls when you want them
Turning off automatic launch need not make playback controls hard to reach. Apple says you can open the Now Playing app directly, tap its complication on a watch face if one is available, or tap its widget in the Smart Stack while media is playing. Now Playing can control playback on Apple Watch, iPhone, and other devices.
