That switch only controls automatic app installs; updates, background content, Safari downloads and iCloud syncing have separate settings. Choose the control that matches what you are seeing.
Stop apps you get on another device from installing on your iPhone
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps > App Store.
- Turn off App Downloads.
Apple describes this option as automatically installing apps purchased on your other devices. Turning it off stops that behavior; it does not prevent you from downloading an app yourself. See Apple’s App Store settings and restrictions guide.

Stop automatic app updates or in-app content
In Settings > Apps > App Store, check these two controls separately:

- App Updates: Turn this off to stop the App Store from automatically downloading and installing app updates. You can update apps manually when you choose.
- In-App Content: Turn this off to stop apps from automatically downloading content in the background before you first open them.
These settings govern different behaviors, so switch off only the one you want to change. Apple explains both in its App Store guide.

Reduce automatic downloads over a cellular or Wi-Fi connection
Low Data Mode can reduce background data use on the specific cellular or Wi-Fi connection where you enable it. Apple says it turns off App Store video autoplay, automatic updates and automatic downloads, along with Music automatic downloads and some other background activity. Its effects vary by app and service, so it is not a universal blocker for files an app downloads.
Apple’s instructions for using Low Data Mode on iPhone and iPad describe how to enable it for the relevant connection. The guidance was published October 15, 2025.

Change where Safari saves downloaded files
If the files are coming from Safari, its Downloads setting changes their save location rather than stopping downloads. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Downloads, then choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or Other. Apple documents these destination options in its Safari settings guide.

Stop an app from syncing its data with iCloud
To stop an app connecting to iCloud, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All, select the app and turn off its iCloud use. Apple says the app’s data will then exist only on your device. That can affect access to the data on your other devices; it is an iCloud sync control, not a switch that blocks downloads performed within the app. See Apple’s instructions for changing which apps sync and store data with iCloud.

Restrict app installs or redownloads on a device
For a child’s iPhone or another device where you need to restrict store activity, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and review the controls for store purchases, app downloads and redownloads. Apple documents these as restrictions on store activity and app access; they are not a system-wide block for files downloaded inside apps.
