If your iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max restarts after Face ID fails, install iOS 27.0.1 or a later available iOS update. Apple’s release notes specifically say iOS 27.0.1 fixes unexpected restarts on those models when Face ID fails to authenticate. The fix applies to that documented pattern; it is not a guarantee for every iPhone that reboots.
What to do first
-
Open Apple’s iPhone update instructions and follow the current steps to check for and install iOS 27.0.1 or a later available update. Apple lists the Face ID-related restart issue as fixed in iOS 27.0.1. Apple’s iOS 27 updates has the release notes.

After the update, use the phone normally and note whether any restart follows a failed Face ID attempt. Do not deliberately trigger repeated Face ID failures to test the phone.

Which iPhone restarts does iOS 27.0.1 address?
Apple identifies unexpected restarts on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max when Face ID fails to authenticate. Reports before the update described a freeze followed by a reboot after a Face ID challenge, including challenges in protected apps. The release notes establish the specific software fix, but do not explain its underlying engineering cause or how many owners were affected.
Apple’s security releases listing dates iOS 27.0.1 to September 28, 2026, and lists it for iPhone 11 and later. That listing is regionalized; the consulted English-language page is Apple Support’s Saudi Arabia site. Apple’s security releases contains the version entry.

If your iPhone 18 Pro keeps restarting after the update
A restart that persists after updating, occurs without a Face ID failure, or becomes a repeated boot loop may have a different cause. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro repair manual has a troubleshooting section for unexpected freezes, restarts, or shutdowns; it is the appropriate next reference for persistent symptoms. iPhone 18 Pro Repair Manual is dated September 22, 2026. Seek service or hardware evaluation if Apple’s guidance directs you to do so; replacing a functioning phone is not the standard remedy for the Face ID-related bug.
