For a text from a legitimate business, reply with a clear opt-out such as STOP or UNSUBSCRIBE. For a suspicious message, don’t reply, click links, or share information—block and report it instead. You can also filter messages on your phone, ask your carrier about blocking tools, and report persistent or suspected scam texts. AI use alone does not determine whether a message is illegal.
First decide whether it is safe to reply
A display name or an unexpected claim does not prove who sent a text. If the message asks for personal or financial information, do not click its links or provide details. If it claims to be from an organization you know, verify the message by contacting that organization through a website or phone number you already trust—not through contact details in the text. The FTC’s guidance on recognizing and reporting spam texts explains how to handle suspicious messages.

Opt out of texts from a legitimate sender
If the sender appears legitimate and you want its messages to stop, reply with a clear request such as STOP, QUIT, END, REVOKE, OPT OUT, CANCEL, or UNSUBSCRIBE. Under the FCC’s 2024 rulemaking, covered senders must honor a clear revocation made by a reasonable method within a reasonable time, no more than ten business days. A sender may send one text confirming the opt-out. See the FCC rulemaking.

Block or filter messages on your phone
Use the messaging app’s block-sender control for a particular number or conversation, and check your phone’s messaging settings for options to filter unknown senders. Names and menu paths vary by device, operating-system version, and app, so look for controls labeled “Block,” “Report spam,” or “Filter unknown senders.” Your wireless provider may also offer blocking tools; the FTC recommends asking the provider what is available. FTC spam-text guidance covers these options.
Report spam texts and suspected scams
- Messaging app: Use its report-junk or report-spam option, if available.
- Wireless provider: Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM). This sends the report to your provider; it is not a guarantee that the messages will stop immediately.
- FTC: Report suspected scams through the FTC’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

What to do if the texts continue
Keep the dates, sender information, and message content if you may need to explain what happened. Continue using available phone or carrier filters, and report persistent unwanted texts to the FCC through its consumer complaint process, choosing the category for unwanted calls or texts that best fits your issue.
The FCC says it does not resolve individual unwanted-call or text complaints. It explains: “We do not resolve individual unwanted call or text complaints, but your complaint provides valuable information that we use to inform policy decisions and as the basis of potential enforcement actions against those violating our rules.” A complaint can inform policy or enforcement work, but should not be treated as a service that will stop messages to your number. When an unwanted text may violate the rules
Whether a text is unlawful depends on the applicable rules and the circumstances of the message and how it was sent. In FCC order FCC 23-107, the FCC describes TCPA consent requirements for certain calls and texts sent using an automatic telephone dialing system or a prerecorded or artificial voice. It states that prior express written consent is required when a robotext includes or introduces an advertisement or constitutes telemarketing.
Those rules do not make every unwanted text unlawful, and AI use by itself is not the legal test described in the order. If you seek help, document what was sent and when, rather than assuming that the sender’s use of AI settles the question.
