To remove information it already has, also delete the saved memory, the chat where you shared it, and any separate copies in files or connected apps. These are different controls: turning off memory does not necessarily delete past chats, and opting out of model improvement is not a deletion command.
For highly sensitive information, the safest step is not to enter it. Temporary or incognito modes can reduce persistence under a provider’s stated rules, but they do not guarantee zero retention. The steps below cover current official guidance for consumer ChatGPT, personal-account Gemini where available, and consumer Claude; settings and policies may differ for work or school accounts, plans, regions, and administrators.

First, know which control you need
“Remembering” can mean several things. Check each separately rather than relying on one privacy switch.
- Memory or personalization lets earlier chats or saved facts influence later answers.
- Chat history or activity is the record of conversations kept in your account or activity log.
- Model improvement controls whether eligible conversations may be used to improve models. Turning it off does not erase chats.
- Files and connected apps can hold separate copies or provide another way for an assistant to access information.
- Deletion and retention are not always the same: removing something from the interface may not immediately remove every provider-held copy.
A careful cleanup therefore has two parts: prevent future personalization, then remove existing information from each place it may have been stored. If you shared a password, financial credential, recovery code, or other secret, change or revoke it as appropriate; deleting a chat cannot undo disclosure.

Stop ChatGPT from using sensitive information
These steps reflect OpenAI’s consumer ChatGPT guidance. Workspaces and managed accounts may have different settings or administrator controls.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review the memory summary and saved memories, delete the sensitive item, and turn Memory off if you do not want future memory-based personalization. OpenAI cautions that a summary may not show every detail. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance.
- Delete the chat where you originally shared the information. Also check regular and archived chats, files in Library, and connected apps. A chat deletion does not delete a separately saved memory, and a Library file can remain after its chat is removed. OpenAI says deleted saved-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging; memory changes and deletions can take time to propagate. The Chat and file retention policy describes chat deletion and exceptions.
- For a future sensitive conversation you still need to have, start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized before typing if you do not want existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins used. Temporary Chats do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models. They stay out of chat history unless saved; OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Saving one converts it to a regular conversation subject to your account’s normal settings. See Temporary Chat guidance. Limited safety-relevant context may still be available in rare high-risk situations, and a GPT action may send information to a third party governed by that recipient’s policy.
- If you also want to stop new personal-account conversations being used to improve OpenAI models, open Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and turn it off. This is separate from memory and deletion. For account deletion behavior and the training control, see OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.
OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, except when it was already de-identified and disassociated from the account or longer retention is required for security or legal obligations. Remove Library files separately.

Stop Gemini from using sensitive information
Google’s cited Memory controls apply to personal accounts where the feature is available. Google says this feature is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts in the relevant help guidance.

The option’s availability depends on account and product conditions. See Google’s guidance on personalization with memory of past Gemini chats.
- Delete relevant conversations from Gemini Apps Activity or Recent chats to remove information already learned from those chats. Google says Gemini may take a short time to stop using a deleted chat for personalization.
- If the information came from a connected Google app, delete the relevant chat and disconnect the app. Doing only one may leave the information accessible through the other source; changes to connected-app data can take days to affect Gemini.
- To stop future activity from being saved in Gemini Apps Activity, turn off Keep Activity. Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours to operate the service and process feedback, even when Keep Activity is off; certain Gems may also continue to be saved. Follow Google’s activity management instructions.
- For a conversation you do not want used for personalization from past chats, use Temporary Chat and review the current terms in Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. Temporary Chat is not a zero-retention setting.
Google says Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete is 18 months by default, with options of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Chats reviewed by human reviewers and related information are not deleted when a user deletes activity; Google says they may be retained for up to three years. Other service, legal, or security exceptions may apply.

Stop Claude from retaining or using consumer chats
Anthropic’s cited retention guidance covers consumer Claude products; it does not establish the exact memory-setting steps for every Claude plan. Delete a conversation to remove it from chat history immediately; Anthropic says deletion from back-end storage occurs within 30 days. For future model use, turning off Model Improvement prevents previous or new chats from being used in future training, but does not remove material from training runs already underway or models already trained.
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Its consumer guidance also states that de-identified chat data can be retained in model-training pipelines for up to five years when a user allows use to improve Claude; that period applies to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled. What to do if you use another assistant
Do not assume one service’s controls apply to another. For Microsoft Copilot, the current steps and retention terms depend on the specific consumer or organizational product; consult Microsoft’s official guidance for the account you use rather than copying the ChatGPT or Gemini instructions.
For any assistant, look for separate controls for saved memories, chat/activity history, model improvement, temporary sessions, uploaded files, and connected services. In a work or school account, an administrator may set retention or restrict what you can change. Check the provider’s current policy for your exact product and account type before treating deletion as complete.

A practical checklist before and after sharing
Before entering sensitive information
- Do not enter information you would not want retained, reviewed, or exposed through a connected tool.
- Use a temporary or incognito mode only after checking what it excludes and what retention still applies.
- For workplace, health, financial, or legal information, follow your organization’s rules and use an approved account or tool.
If you have already shared it
- Turn off memory or personalization to prevent future cross-chat use.
- Delete the relevant saved memory and the source conversation.
- Remove separate copies from file libraries and disconnect or clean up relevant connected apps.
- Turn off model improvement if you do not want eligible future chats used for that purpose.
- For credentials or access codes, rotate or revoke them; do not rely on deletion alone.
