Recommended Free Tools
To keep a particular item from informing Amazon product recommendations, open Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck Use this item for recommendations on that item’s page. You can also edit Your Browsing History, but Amazon does not describe that history control as a universal off switch for personalization. These instructions apply to Amazon.com in the US; account-page labels and layout may vary.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
Amazon’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026, says it uses personal information to recommend products and services, identify preferences, and personalize the Amazon experience. It names two customer-managed controls relevant to browsing and recommendations: Your Browsing History and Improve Your Recommendations. They address related but different things.

| Control | What it addresses | What Amazon documents |
|---|---|---|
| Your Browsing History | The browsing-history list associated with your Amazon account | Customers can edit the history. The notice does not specify the exact removal control or promise a particular deletion effect. |
| Improve Your Recommendations | Whether an individual item is used for recommendations | Uncheck Use this item for recommendations on that item’s page to remove recommendations you do not want to see. |
| Your Ads Privacy Choices | Personalized advertising | A separate advertising-preference control; it is not the store recommendation setting. |
| Silk private tabs | Browsing history stored by Amazon Silk on the device | Visited pages are removed from Silk’s local history when the private tab closes. This does not establish that Amazon account recommendation data changes. |
Amazon’s notice does not establish that excluding one item erases every record of it, disables all personalization, or removes it from every recommendation surface. Treat the two account controls as ways to manage history and recommendation inputs, not as a general deletion or personalization-off guarantee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It helps to identify what is actually bothering you before changing settings. A product tile in the Amazon store, a list of recently viewed products, and an advertisement are not necessarily controlled by the same preference. If one specific product keeps appearing as a recommendation, the per-item control in Improve Your Recommendations is the most directly relevant documented option. If your aim is to manage the list of products shown as viewed, use Your Browsing History. If the unwanted content is an ad, use the ad preference instead.

These distinctions also set expectations: the notice describes controls customers can manage, but it does not promise one setting that clears all information or stops every form of personalization. Nor does it define a single click path that will look identical for all accounts or devices. Look for the named setting in your Amazon account, and follow the controls currently displayed there.
Exclude a specific item from Amazon recommendations
-
Sign in to the Amazon account whose recommendations you want to change. Use the account where the recommendations appear; an account control cannot be assumed to change another account’s settings.
-
Open Improve Your Recommendations from your account. Amazon documents this setting by name; the precise route and page layout may vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Find the item you do not want used for recommendations and uncheck Use this item for recommendations on that item’s page.
-
Repeat for other items you want to exclude individually. Amazon describes the control on an item-by-item basis, so do not assume that changing one item excludes every similar or related item.
This is the clearest documented action when the issue is a product suggestion influenced by a particular item. Amazon’s Privacy Notice says customers can remove recommendations they do not want to see by unchecking Use this item for recommendations on the right side of the page for each item. If the current page places the control differently, use the label rather than relying on a fixed visual location; account-page layout may change.
Think of this as a targeted recommendation setting, not a request to erase the item from Amazon’s records. The notice describes the control in terms of recommendations. It does not say that the item’s purchase or browsing record is erased, that all personal information about the item is deleted, or that other recommendation signals stop being used. It also does not promise that every page or product suggestion will immediately look different after you change the setting.

If you are trying to address several unwanted suggestions, review the items represented in Improve Your Recommendations and manage the relevant ones individually. This is more precise than changing a general browser setting when your goal is specifically to exclude particular recommendation inputs. Conversely, if the item you want to manage is not available in that page, the Privacy Notice does not provide a guaranteed alternate control path or promise that every activity will appear there.
Edit the account’s browsing history
-
Sign in to the relevant Amazon account.
-
Open Your Browsing History from the account or browsing-history area.
-
Find the items you want to manage and use the controls displayed on that page.
Amazon confirms customers can edit this history, but its Privacy Notice does not specify a removal-button label or define what effect a history edit has on stored information or recommendation inputs. If your goal is specifically to prevent an item from being used for recommendations, use the per-item control in Improve Your Recommendations as well; the two settings are distinct.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThat distinction matters because editing a visible history list and excluding an item from recommendations are not interchangeable claims. Amazon documents the history page as something customers can edit, but does not state in the notice that removing an entry there necessarily removes every copy of the underlying information or toggles the recommendation setting for that item. If recommendation use is the concern, check the dedicated item control rather than relying only on the history list.
Likewise, if you are trying to clear the visible list, use the controls that the page itself presents. Do not expect a particular button name based on an old set of instructions: Amazon’s current notice does not give the exact removal label. The appropriate next step is to identify the displayed item, review the available controls, and make the edit that matches your intention.
For unwanted ads, use the advertising setting
If what you are seeing is a personalized advertisement rather than a product recommendation in the Amazon store, open Your Ads Privacy Choices. Amazon identifies advertising preferences separately from browsing-history and product-recommendation controls. Changing an ad preference is not the documented way to exclude a product from store recommendations.

In practical terms, distinguish the placement and purpose of the content before choosing a setting. A recommendation is a product or service suggestion in the Amazon shopping experience; an advertisement is covered by the advertising-preference control. The names of these controls are useful because they describe different layers. If you change an advertising preference while your concern is a store recommendation, you may be changing the wrong thing. If you exclude an item from recommendations, that should not be presented as a setting for personalized advertising.
Other browsing choices and their trade-offs
Browse signed out and block cookies
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says that customers who want to browse without linking browsing history to their account may sign out and block cookies in their browser. Amazon also warns that rejecting cookies can prevent use of the shopping cart, checkout, and services that require sign-in. This is a broader, more disruptive browsing choice than managing an item in the account settings.
This option is not the first choice if you only want to stop one item from influencing product recommendations. It affects browsing more broadly and comes with a usability cost: Amazon specifically identifies the cart, checkout, and sign-in-dependent services as functions that may not work when cookies are rejected. Consider that consequence before changing cookie settings, especially if you are in the middle of shopping or need to use account services.
Amazon describes signing out and blocking cookies together as a way to browse without linking browsing history to the account. The notice does not say that signing out alone, or blocking only some cookies, has the same result. It also does not promise that this choice erases earlier account activity or changes recommendation inputs already associated with the account. Treat it as a choice about browsing without that account linkage, not as a substitute for managing existing items in the account’s recommendation controls.
Use a Silk private tab only for local browser history
Amazon Silk’s private-tab behavior concerns history stored by the browser: visited pages are removed from Silk browsing history after the tab closes. Downloads and bookmarks remain. Amazon also notes that websites visited or an internet provider may still be able to observe activity. Private browsing in Silk does not establish that activity is excluded from Amazon account recommendations.
This is a separate layer from the Amazon account settings. A Silk private tab can help with the local history Silk keeps on the device, but its documented effect is limited to visited pages being removed from Silk’s local browsing history when the tab closes. It does not remove downloaded files or bookmarks, and it does not make visited activity invisible to websites or the internet provider. Do not use private-tab behavior as evidence that account-based recommendation settings have changed.
Keep the device and account distinction in mind: a browser can manage its own local record, while Amazon account pages manage account-related history and recommendation preferences. If your concern is a specific Amazon recommendation, use the corresponding account control even if you also choose a private browser tab for local-history reasons.

A practical way to decide what to change
Use the smallest control that matches the unwanted content. If one viewed product is leading to an unwanted store suggestion, start with Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck that item’s recommendation toggle. If the visible browsing-history list is what you want to edit, open Your Browsing History. If the content is a personalized ad, use Your Ads Privacy Choices. If the issue is what Silk retains on the device, use a Silk private tab and close it when finished.
Then keep the limits of each change in view. Amazon’s Privacy Notice gives a specific instruction for the item-level recommendation toggle, but it does not describe the history-editing button or guarantee that one change removes all records, all recommendations, or all personalization. Silk documents a browser-local history effect, not an account setting. Cookie blocking is a broader option, with possible effects on cart, checkout, and services requiring sign-in.
This approach avoids making a broader change than you need. You do not need a VPN, a paid service, an extension, or a printed guide to use the account controls described here; Amazon identifies the relevant settings within its own account and privacy options. A third-party privacy tool is not established by Amazon’s notice as a way to change the item-level recommendation toggle. For the headline task, use Amazon’s own named setting.
Keep the different kinds of history and personalization separate
- Want to stop a particular item from informing recommendations? Uncheck Use this item for recommendations for that item in Improve Your Recommendations.
- Want to manage the account’s browsing-history list? Edit Your Browsing History using the controls shown there.
- Want to manage personalized ads? Use Your Ads Privacy Choices, which addresses advertising preferences.
- Want pages not retained in Silk’s local history? Use a Silk private tab and close it when finished, understanding that downloads and bookmarks remain.
- Want to browse without linking history to your account? Amazon describes signing out and blocking cookies, but warns this can interfere with the cart, checkout, and services requiring sign-in.
These settings operate at different layers. Choose the one that matches the unwanted content rather than assuming that one change controls account history, store recommendations, advertising, and browser-local records all at once.
Amazon’s Privacy Notice describes its use of personal information this way: “We use your personal information to recommend features, products, and services that might be of interest to you, identify your preferences, and personalize your experience with Amazon Services.” The notice’s controls let customers manage certain aspects of that experience; it does not characterize any one of them as a universal switch for every use of personal information.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop Amazon recommendations based on a specific item?
Open Improve Your Recommendations in the Amazon account and uncheck Use this item for recommendations on the page for that item. Amazon’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026, identifies this as the per-item way to remove recommendations you do not want to see. Repeat for other items you want to exclude.

To exclude a particular item from recommendations, use the separate Use this item for recommendations control in Improve Your Recommendations.
Best Value
Does the recommendation toggle erase all records of an item?
Amazon describes the toggle as a way to remove recommendations you do not want to see. The notice does not promise that unchecking it erases every record of the item, deletes all related personal information, or disables every form of personalization.
Will this stop personalized Amazon ads too?
The recommendation control and advertising preferences are separate. For unwanted personalized advertising, Amazon identifies Your Ads Privacy Choices as the relevant setting. The item-level recommendation toggle is the documented choice for store recommendations, not a general advertising control.
Can I browse Amazon without linking my history to my account?
Amazon’s Privacy Notice says you may sign out and block cookies in your browser to browse without linking browsing history to your account. Amazon warns that rejecting cookies can prevent shopping-cart use, checkout, and services that require sign-in, so this broader approach can make shopping less convenient.

Does Amazon Silk private browsing stop Amazon account recommendations?
Amazon Silk says visited pages are removed from Silk’s local browsing history after a private tab closes. That local-browser behavior does not establish that Amazon account recommendation data changes. Downloads and bookmarks remain, and websites visited or your internet provider may still be able to observe activity.
Where is the Use this item for recommendations setting?
Amazon documents the control on the item’s page within Improve Your Recommendations. Its Privacy Notice describes it as being on the right side of the page, but account-page labels and layout may vary. Look for the exact toggle wording rather than assuming a fixed route or screen position.
The Bottom Line
For a particular unwanted product suggestion, use Improve Your Recommendations and uncheck Use this item for recommendations for that item. Manage Your Browsing History, ad preferences, and Silk’s local history separately: Amazon documents these as different controls, not a single switch that erases all history or disables all personalization.
