To give a YouTube Live archive the best chance of being saved, end an encoder-based broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, keep a separate local recording as a backup, and verify both recordings after stopping. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a caveat, not a guarantee either way.
Before stopping: protect the recording
A YouTube archive and a local recording are separate copies. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends recording locally as a backup, particularly because a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a YouTube archive. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan a stop before the 12-hour boundary if retaining YouTube’s archive matters; do not assume one continuously running event will produce a dependable archive.

- Check the local recording. Confirm it is active, inspect the file for integrity, and make sure its size is growing. A configured recording that is not progressing is not a usable backup.
- Keep the copies distinct. The YouTube archive is stored on the platform; the local recording is a separate file under your control. A local copy does not guarantee YouTube will capture its archive, and YouTube’s archive does not prove your local recording worked.
How to end an encoder-based stream
- Check the local backup first. Verify that the recording is running and that the file is growing before ending the broadcast.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the controls shown for that stream. For scheduled encoder streams, YouTube’s instructions include clicking End Stream and stopping encoder output.
- End the stream on YouTube, then stop the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Its streaming tips advise stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. For a scheduled stream, use the displayed End Stream control and stop sending content from the encoder.
- Let the local recording finish cleanly. Once encoder transmission has stopped, confirm the recording has finalized and that its file is intact. Retain the file somewhere with enough storage for the full recording; an external drive is optional, but the drive alone does not configure or verify recording.
- Verify the YouTube archive. In YouTube Studio, open the Live tab and find the stream among previous broadcasts. Confirm that the expected archive is present and check its visibility before changing privacy settings or deleting anything.
Archive, visibility, and DVR are different
- Archive capture: whether YouTube created a post-stream recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Visibility: who can view an archive that exists. Changing an archive’s visibility does not establish that it was captured; first locate and inspect it in Studio.
- DVR: whether viewers can pause, rewind, or resume while the broadcast is live. YouTube notes that DVR can be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off affects live seeking; it is not an archive-preservation setting. YouTube says viewers can still see a recording of the entire stream once it is available.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera, and it does not remove the need to plan archive stops: YouTube’s archive guidance for streams longer than 12 hours still applies.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial registration.
