If your VPN keeps disconnecting, first check whether your regular internet connection stays online without the VPN. If it does, test a different VPN server, then a different protocol or port supported by your provider. If ordinary internet drops too, troubleshoot Wi-Fi, the router, or your ISP before changing VPN settings. Automatic reconnect and a kill switch can help manage interruptions, but neither fixes the cause.
1. Check whether the internet itself is dropping
Disconnect the VPN briefly and try ordinary browsing. If pages still fail to load, the VPN tunnel is probably not the only problem: check your Wi-Fi signal, router, modem, or ISP connection. PIA recommends checking internet access with the VPN disconnected and trying another network as part of its connection troubleshooting guidance.

If non-VPN internet remains stable while the VPN drops, focus on the VPN server, protocol, port, or how the current network handles VPN traffic.

Try a different VPN server
Choose another server in the VPN app and observe whether the connection stays up. If only one server repeatedly disconnects, the issue may be specific to that route or server. Server problems are one possibility, not a diagnosis; PIA also lists network restrictions and incompatible settings among potential causes.

Try a different network
Connect through another Wi-Fi network or a mobile hotspot, if available. If the VPN works there but not on your usual connection, that points toward the original network, router, firewall, or ISP path interfering with VPN traffic. It does not, by itself, identify which one is responsible.
3. Change the VPN protocol or port one at a time
When ordinary internet stays reliable, open the VPN app’s connection settings and try another protocol or port that the provider supports. Change one setting, reconnect, and see whether the pattern changes before trying another. Some networks block or interfere with particular VPN protocols or ports, but there is no single protocol that is best for every provider and network.

IVPN explains that lost or blocked keepalive or data packets can cause a tunnel to be considered unavailable. Its guidance describes trying a port change or WireGuard in supported native apps; these options and their results vary by provider and network. See IVPN’s VPN disconnection troubleshooting.
4. Check Wi-Fi and device behavior
Test Wi-Fi against a wired connection on Windows
If VPN drops coincide with Wi-Fi interruptions, test the PC over Ethernet when practical. Microsoft explains how to connect a router and PC with an Ethernet cable; a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter may help if the PC lacks an Ethernet port. This is a way to isolate Wi-Fi as a cause, not a guaranteed VPN fix: Microsoft’s Windows network connection guidance.

Review Windows Wi-Fi power management
For frequent Wi-Fi drops, Microsoft recommends checking the Wi-Fi adapter’s power-management setting as well as testing Ethernet. The exact menus can vary with Windows version and hardware. Follow Microsoft’s current Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps rather than assuming every PC has identical controls.
Use managed-device settings carefully
Some settings that affect tunnel persistence are intended for administrators, not ordinary end users. Apple’s managed IKEv2 configuration includes dead-peer detection keepalive options and optional disconnect-on-idle settings. If this is a work-managed Apple device, ask the administrator before changing its VPN configuration: Apple’s declarative device management documentation.

5. Set up recovery and understand the kill switch
Enable automatic reconnect if available
Check the VPN app for an automatic reconnect option and enable it if repeated connection attempts suit your needs. Cisco Secure Client documents an Auto Reconnect feature, including behavior related to system suspend and trusted-network detection. Other clients may use different labels or rules, so follow your app’s own documentation: Cisco Secure Client profile settings.

Know what a kill switch does
A kill switch may block internet traffic that is not going through the VPN server while the tunnel is down. That can limit exposure during an interruption, but it can also make the device appear offline until the VPN reconnects. It does not keep the tunnel connected or repair the cause. Behavior varies by platform; NordVPN describes its implementation in its kill switch documentation.
6. Gather details before contacting support
If changing servers, supported protocols or ports, and networks does not isolate the problem, contact your VPN provider. For a workplace VPN, contact the administrator instead; managed settings or network policies may be involved. Where the provider supports diagnostic logs, use its official process and send logs only through its official support route.
Include these details so support can compare the failures with your configuration:
- Device model and operating-system version
- VPN app name and version
- Protocol and port, if the app shows them
- Server or location used
- Network type, such as home Wi-Fi, workplace Wi-Fi, mobile hotspot, or Ethernet
- Approximate times of the drops
- Whether regular internet also failed when the VPN was disconnected
