How to Stop a Sneeze Safely When You Feel One Coming

Let an incoming sneeze out safely into a tissue or your elbow—never clamp your nose and mouth shut. Learn what to avoid, how to manage triggers and when to seek care.

You usually should not try to stop a sneeze by sealing your nose and mouth or trapping the pressure. Let the reflex out while containing the spray: cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, throw the tissue away, and clean your hands. If no tissue is available, sneeze into the crook of your elbow. These steps protect people around you without forcing pressure back into your ears, sinuses or airways.

What to do the moment a sneeze starts

A sneeze is an involuntary clearing reflex: MedlinePlus describes it as a sudden, forceful, uncontrolled burst of air through the nose and mouth. Irritation in the nose or throat can trigger it before you have time to move far.

  1. Reach for a tissue if one is within reach. Hold it over both your nose and mouth before the sneeze leaves.
  2. Turn away from other people. If you are in a crowded room, face toward an open space rather than directly at someone.
  3. Let the sneeze happen into the tissue. Do not pinch your nostrils shut or clamp your teeth and lips together to block the airflow.
  4. Dispose of the tissue immediately. Put it in a lined trash can rather than on a desk, counter or seat.
  5. Clean your hands. Wash with soap and water after sneezing or blowing your nose. If a sink is unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer according to its label.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends this tissue-and-disposal sequence as part of its “Healthy Habits: Coughing and Sneezing” guidance, published April 16, 2024.

Tissue or elbow: which is safer?

Both options contain droplets. The practical choice depends on what you can reach without delaying the sneeze.

Option How to use it When it makes sense Follow-up
Tissue Cover your nose and mouth, sneeze, then discard it. A tissue is immediately available. Clean your hands after disposal.
Elbow Bend one arm and sneeze into the inner elbow, not your hands. No tissue is available or reaching for one would make you miss the sneeze. Wash the clothing-covered area when practical; still clean your hands if they became contaminated.

The elbow is not a second-rate solution. CDC specifically recommends it when a tissue is unavailable because it keeps droplets off your hands, which touch phones, door handles and other shared surfaces. Do not use your bare hands unless there is no alternative and you can wash them straight away.

Why holding a sneeze in can cause problems

The pressure generated by a sneeze needs an exit. Closing both the mouth and nose can redirect that pressure into the respiratory tract and the connected spaces of the ears and sinuses. Cleveland Clinic’s November 4, 2024 guidance, “Can Holding in a Sneeze Hurt You?”, warns that this can lead to ear or sinus problems.

This is a risk, not a prediction that every suppressed sneeze will cause an injury. The sensible rule is simply to avoid deliberately forcing the reflex shut. DeVon Preston, MD, an allergy and clinical immunology specialist quoted by Cleveland Clinic, explains why the reflex exists: “While sneezing plays a major part in the spread of infection, it’s also necessary for removing irritants, allergens and other foreign debris from your sinuses.”

Do not use any of these methods to trap a sneeze:

  • Pinching the nose while closing the mouth.
  • Holding the breath to keep the pressure inside.
  • Clamping the jaw and lips tightly together.
  • Inserting a finger, tissue or another object into the nose.

If you accidentally suppressed a sneeze and then develop significant ear pain, hearing changes, severe facial pain, swelling or trouble breathing, seek medical advice promptly rather than trying to trigger or suppress another sneeze.

When you have only a second to react

A sneeze can build rapidly, especially when you are walking, driving or handling equipment. Plan for containment rather than searching for a trick that promises to cancel the reflex.

At a desk or in a meeting

Keep a small supply of tissues within arm’s reach. At the first tickle, lift one to your face, turn away and sneeze into it. If the tissue is across the room, use your elbow instead of standing up while the sneeze is already starting. Throw the tissue away before touching a keyboard, shared pen or conference-room surface.

In a car

Do not cover your face in a way that blocks your view or grip while the vehicle is moving. If you are the driver and a sneeze is building, keep control of the vehicle, look ahead and use the elbow of the arm that is not needed for steering only if doing so does not compromise control. Pull over safely if repeated sneezing makes driving difficult. Passengers should use a tissue or elbow and avoid handing loose tissues to the driver during a critical maneuver.

In a shop, classroom or public transport

Turn your head away from nearby people and use your elbow if a tissue is not already in your hand. Once clear of the immediate crowd, discard a used tissue and wash or sanitize your hands. A mask may reduce spread when worn correctly, but it is not a reason to pinch your nose shut; follow the same open-airflow approach and replace a soiled mask according to its instructions.

While wearing glasses or hearing devices

A tissue can be held around the nose and mouth without pressing hard on the bridge of glasses or the ear pieces of hearing devices. Avoid pushing fingers into the nostrils to prevent fogging or movement. Wipe or clean devices only according to their manufacturer’s care directions if droplets reach them.

Are rubbing, breath-holding or pressure points proven?

People describe rubbing the nose, pressing under it, changing their breathing or concentrating on another sensation. Some may seem to interrupt a particular sneeze, but they are not established, reliable ways to stop the reflex safely. A 2023 explainer from the University of Wollongong notes that pressing under the nose may suppress a sneeze while advising against holding or pressing the nose in that way.

If a gentle rub happens naturally while you reach for a tissue, it is unlikely to be the main issue; the important boundary is not to insert objects or apply force that closes the nasal passages. Do not hold your breath to trap pressure, and do not present an anecdotal technique as a guaranteed method. The dependable action is containment followed by hand hygiene.

Why you keep sneezing: common triggers

Stopping one sneeze does not address the reason it started. MedlinePlus lists irritation and several environmental or medical causes. Look for a pattern in where and when sneezing occurs.

Possible trigger Clues Useful first response
Dust or mold Sneezing during cleaning, in an older building or in a damp room. Reduce exposure, improve ventilation and use appropriate cleaning practices. Avoid stirring dust into the air unnecessarily.
Pollen Symptoms appear seasonally or after time outdoors and may include an itchy or runny nose. Limit exposure to the identified pollen when practical and discuss allergy care with a clinician or pharmacist.
Animal dander Sneezing around a particular animal or in rooms where it spends time. Move away from the trigger and clean surfaces; persistent symptoms may need allergy-directed care.
Dry air Nasal irritation is worse in heated or air-conditioned rooms. Address the room’s dryness and avoid other irritants. A clinician can advise if nasal symptoms persist.
Strong odors or smoke Sneezing follows perfume, cleaning chemicals, smoke or other fumes. Leave the area and ventilate it safely. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty after inhaling fumes.
Respiratory infection Sneezing occurs with congestion, sore throat, cough, fatigue or fever. Use infection-control habits, rest and fluids as appropriate, and monitor for worsening symptoms.

A short-lived sneeze after a clear irritant is different from weeks of sneezing that disrupts sleep, work or school. Note the setting, timing and accompanying symptoms so you can describe the pattern accurately to a healthcare professional.

What can help recurring allergy-related sneezing?

For allergic rhinitis, MedlinePlus says antihistamines can work well, and a nasal wash may help mild symptoms. These are options for managing an underlying pattern; they are not guaranteed switches for a sneeze that is already starting.

Using an antihistamine

Choose a product only after considering your age, health conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, other medicines and the product’s directions. Some antihistamines can cause drowsiness or interact with other medicines. A pharmacist or clinician can help you select an appropriate product and explain timing.

Trying a nasal wash

A saline nasal wash may ease mild allergic-rhinitis symptoms by rinsing irritants from the nasal passages. Use a commercially prepared product or follow medical guidance for preparation and equipment hygiene. Stop and seek advice if it causes pain, bleeding or worsening symptoms.

Using a decongestant spray

MedlinePlus cautions not to use nasal decongestant sprays for more than three days in a row. Longer use can worsen congestion for some people. Read the specific label and ask a healthcare professional if you have questions or a condition that affects medication choices.

When to contact a healthcare provider

Contact a healthcare provider when sneezing keeps affecting daily life despite reasonable trigger reduction, or when the cause is unclear and symptoms continue. MedlinePlus identifies fever and shortness of breath as important accompanying symptoms that warrant medical attention.

  • Persistent disruption: Repeated sneezing interferes with sleep, work, school or ordinary activities.
  • Possible allergy: Symptoms recur around pollen, dust, mold or animals and do not improve when exposure is reduced.
  • Possible infection: Sneezing comes with fever, worsening cough, marked fatigue or other illness symptoms.
  • Breathing concern: You have shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness or trouble speaking normally.
  • Severe or unusual pain: You develop intense ear or facial pain, hearing changes, swelling or bleeding after trying to suppress a sneeze.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or gray lips, confusion, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not drive yourself if you are struggling to breathe.

A simple prevention setup

You cannot always predict a sneeze, but a few preparations make safe containment automatic.

  1. Keep tissues at your desk, bedside, in a bag and in the glove compartment.
  2. Place a lined wastebasket where used tissues can be discarded without touching other surfaces.
  3. Wash your hands after sneezing or blowing your nose; carry sanitizer for situations without a sink.
  4. If you have known triggers, reduce exposure in the places where symptoms begin instead of relying on a last-second suppression technique.
  5. Track recurring symptoms and accompanying signs so a clinician can distinguish allergy, irritation and infection patterns.

The goal is not to win a contest against an involuntary reflex. It is to let the sneeze clear the irritant while keeping droplets off people and shared objects.
