To keep a Samsung tablet awake longer, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose a longer interval. Samsung’s cited guidance sets the maximum at 10 minutes; the available choices vary by model, software and region. Samsung says screen timeout cannot be disabled completely.
Change the screen timeout
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display > Screen timeout. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search and look for “Screen timeout.”
- Choose a longer duration from the options shown on your tablet. The cited Samsung guidance gives a maximum of 10 minutes, but your model may offer a different set of intervals. A longer timeout can use more battery.
Samsung Canada documents selectable intervals from 15 seconds to 10 minutes in its regional guidance, while Samsung Australia describes a 30-second default and a 10-minute maximum. These figures are not guaranteed for every Galaxy Tab. Samsung Canada’s screen-timeout guide and Samsung Australia’s guide provide regional details; Samsung US Support also states that the maximum is 10 minutes.

Keep the screen on while you read
If you need the display to stay awake while you look at it without touching the tablet, search Settings for Keep screen on while viewing and turn it on if the option is available. On older software, the feature may be called Smart stay. Samsung describes it as using viewing detection to keep the screen on regardless of the timeout setting.

This feature depends on the tablet detecting your face. It may be missing on some devices or software versions, and Samsung Canada cautions that detection may be unreliable in low light or when your face is not clearly visible. See Samsung Canada’s guidance or Samsung US Support.

Can you turn screen timeout off completely?
No—not according to the cited Samsung support guidance. Choose the longest interval available instead. Samsung Canada explains that screen timeout cannot be turned off completely for security and system reasons; the lock-screen timeout cannot be customized there either. Samsung Canada Support
If the screen still goes dark
Check whether it is dimming rather than turning off
If the display gets darker but remains on, check Adaptive brightness separately. It adjusts brightness based on detected light; turning it off can prevent unwanted brightness changes. This does not change the screen-timeout interval. Samsung US Support

Check for a case-related setting
If the problem began with a particular case or accessory, look under Settings > Advanced features > Accessories > Auto screen on and off, if that option appears. Disable it if appropriate. Samsung says this control is available only with certain cases or accessories. Samsung US Support

Samsung says video in apps such as YouTube, Netflix or Samsung Gallery typically stays on during full-screen playback. Video playing in a browser outside full-screen mode may still time out. Samsung US Support

Check power saving and app behavior
Power saving mode may shorten the timeout. A particular app may also fail to request that the display stay on, so the tablet can time out during that activity. Samsung US Support

Samsung notes that settings and features can vary by device and software. Search Settings for the feature name first; if it is not present, check the manual for your exact Galaxy Tab model and software version. The regional timeout examples above are guidance, not a promise that every tablet has the same default or choices.
