Choose the format and location
Think about where people will watch the video and how you will shoot it. YouTube’s mobile filming guidance suggests holding a phone horizontally for 16:9 high-definition video. GoPro’s vlogging guide associates landscape 16:9 with YouTube and vertical 9:16 with TikTok or Instagram Reels. These are platform and manufacturer recommendations; confirm the current format expectations of the destination you choose.
Film somewhere comfortable and accessible. Check the light and listen for noise at the actual location. For an outdoor shoot, consider weather, transport for your equipment, and whether you will need access to power. If practical, visit the location before recording.
How do you set up a phone for filming?
- Use a camera mode you understand. Auto mode is fine if manual controls are unfamiliar.
- Use the rear camera when practical. YouTube says it can record at higher resolution than the front camera.
- Turn off notifications. This helps prevent interruptions or unexpected alerts during a take.
- Lock focus and exposure if your phone supports it. This can reduce distracting changes in sharpness or brightness during a shot.

How can you make vlog audio clearer?
Get close enough to the microphone for speech to be clear, and listen for fans, traffic, wind, room echo, or nearby activity. Record a brief audio check and play it back before filming the full segment. YouTube’s equipment guidance notes that a camera’s built-in microphone may need the subject to be three to four feet away for best results; that is guidance, not a guarantee for every camera or setting.
To reduce room echo, YouTube suggests softening hard, flat surfaces with materials such as cloth or pillows. Outdoors, move away from traffic or wind where possible. A phone-compatible external microphone may help when the speaker is distant or the environment is noisy, but confirm that the mic, connector, receiver, and recording device work together before buying.

How should you light a vlog?
Start with light that is already available. Indoors, try facing a window so light reaches your face. Outdoors on a sunny day, shade can soften harsh sunlight and reduce dark shadows. YouTube’s phone-filming tips recommend soft, even light to help preserve detail in bright and dark areas. A white card or reflector can bounce light toward a shadowed area.

How do you film without compromising privacy?
Think about consent and personal information when choosing a location and checking the frame, not only when uploading. YouTube’s filming checklist advises obtaining any needed permission from businesses, property owners, or bystanders; respecting privacy; and avoiding someone’s image, voice, or personal information without consent. Check for home addresses, postal codes, phone numbers, and other identifying details in the frame.

When should you consider a dedicated camera?

It describes gimbal or action cameras as suited to walking footage and mirrorless cameras as one option for indoor footage with background blur, while noting size, weight, and stabilization trade-offs. This is manufacturer category guidance, not an independent comparison test.
For product-specific context, GoPro’s guide dated November 27, 2025 describes the HERO13 Black Creator Edition as supporting up to 5.3K/60 video, HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization, and modular lens support. The same guide says the LIT HERO shoots 4K60 and weighs 93 grams. These are GoPro’s published specifications for named products, not independent performance findings or general requirements for vlogging.
