BCH and Bitcoin (BTC) use separate networks: a Bitcoin address is not interchangeable with a Bitcoin Cash destination.
What you need to know before you begin
A wallet manages the keys used to spend BCH; the coins themselves are recorded on the Bitcoin Cash blockchain. With a self-custody wallet, you control those keys and are responsible for keeping a usable recovery backup. If you lose access and have no valid backup, you may be unable to recover your funds, as Bitcoin.com’s wallet guide explains.

- BCH is not BTC. They are separate networks, so do not send BCH to a BTC address or assume an address for one network works on the other.
- Keep recovery credentials private. To receive funds, share a receiving address or its QR code—not your recovery phrase or private key.
- Transfers are irreversible. Bitcoin.com Support describes both BCH and BTC transactions as irreversible; check the network, destination, and amount before confirming. Read its transaction guidance.
Choose a BCH wallet
Select a wallet that explicitly lists Bitcoin Cash support. Wallets may be mobile, desktop, browser-based, or hardware devices. A directory such as BCH Works’ wallet listings can help you find options, but a directory is not an independent security audit or a guarantee of current availability.

For a first wallet, consider how you will use it and how recovery works. A self-custody wallet puts key control with you; a custodial account keeps custody with a provider. Check the provider’s current terms, supported devices, BCH support, backup and recovery process, and availability in your jurisdiction before choosing. A hardware wallet is an option for people who want a dedicated device, not a requirement for a first BCH transaction. Ledger documents its own BCH hardware-wallet workflow at its Bitcoin Cash page; verify that any specific device still supports the features you need.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Back up the wallet before funding it
- Set up the wallet using its official app or device instructions.
- Complete the wallet’s recovery procedure before receiving or buying BCH. Write down or store recovery credentials exactly as the wallet directs, and keep them private and secure.
- Confirm you understand how the wallet restores access before adding funds. Do not disclose a recovery phrase or private key to anyone claiming they need it to send you BCH.
Bitcoin.com’s wallet guide warns that a lost wallet without its backup may not be recoverable. A receiving address is sufficient for someone to send you funds; recovery credentials are not.
Acquire BCH through a route available where you live
Possible routes include wallet apps, websites, and peer-to-peer services. The available choices, identity checks, custody arrangements, fees, prices, and withdrawal support vary by provider and location. Bitcoin.com outlines these categories in its beginner guide to using Bitcoin Cash; check each provider’s current terms and whether you can withdraw BCH to the wallet you chose.

Before paying, confirm that the service is offering BCH—not BTC or another asset—and review the total cost, including any stated fees or price spread. If the service holds the BCH for you, understand its withdrawal and account-recovery rules; buying through a service does not automatically mean you control the wallet keys.
Receive BCH using an address or QR code
- Open the wallet and choose its receive option for Bitcoin Cash.
- Copy the displayed BCH address or show its QR code to the sender.
- Ask the sender to confirm that the destination is for BCH before they send.
- Check the wallet for the incoming transaction and its status.
The current address format described in Bitcoin.com’s wallet guide is CashAddress, commonly beginning with bitcoincash:; legacy formats may also appear. Use the address generated by your BCH wallet, and do not treat a BTC address as an alternative. Addresses and their associated transactions can reveal public balance and history, so consider privacy before reusing one.

Send BCH carefully
- In the wallet, select the Bitcoin Cash wallet and choose the send function.
- Scan or enter the recipient’s BCH address. Confirm through a trusted channel that it is the intended destination and is for BCH.
- Enter the amount and review the displayed network fee and total before confirming.
- Check the network, address, and amount again. Confirm only when all details match your intention.
A small test transfer can be a cautious way to learn an unfamiliar wallet workflow, but it does not guarantee that an error can be recovered. Bitcoin.com’s guide says a typical BCH transaction fee is less than one penny, but this is the guide’s general claim, not a fixed quote for every transaction. The wallet should show the applicable fee before confirmation; check that amount in your own transaction.

- You cannot find BCH in a wallet: Confirm that the wallet supports BCH and that you are viewing its Bitcoin Cash account, not BTC or another network.
- A service will not let you withdraw: Review its current withdrawal rules, supported jurisdictions, identity requirements, and network options. Do not assume every purchase route supports withdrawal to a self-custody wallet.

- You entered a destination or network incorrectly: BCH and BTC transfers are described as irreversible by Bitcoin.com Support. Contact the wallet or service involved for guidance, but do not assume funds can be recovered.
