How to Start Live Streaming on YouTube: A Beginner’s Guide

Verify your channel, enable live streaming, choose mobile, webcam, encoder, or console, and test the stream before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To start live streaming on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Once enabled, choose mobile, webcam, an encoder, or a supported console based on what you want to broadcast, then run a test before your real stream.

Check that your channel can go live

  1. Verify your channel. Follow YouTube’s channel-verification process if you have not already done so.
  2. Check for restrictions. YouTube requires that your channel has not had a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. If your channel is restricted, do not use another channel to get around the restriction; YouTube says circumvention can lead to account termination.
  3. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming activation process. YouTube says a first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until just before an event.
  4. Meet the age requirement. YouTube’s current general help guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.

Live streams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and policy guidance before you schedule an event.

Choose the right way to stream

Method Best for What to know
Mobile app Quick updates or vlogging from a phone or tablet The cited YouTube mobile instructions require at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and live streaming enabled. They list Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+ as supported device requirements. Check YouTube’s current mobile requirements, which can change.
Webcam A straightforward face-to-camera broadcast from a computer Choose this for a direct browser workflow without separate live-stream encoding software. You need a computer with a webcam and microphone. The cited YouTube Help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible.
Encoder Gameplay, overlays, screen sharing, multiple cameras, or external audio/video equipment An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. It gives you more production control but needs more setup and rehearsal.
Console Broadcasting gameplay directly from a supported modern console Some consoles support direct streaming. Follow the console maker’s instructions for the exact setup.

YouTube Help’s live-stream tips put the equipment question plainly: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A webcam or external microphone can improve a particular setup, but neither is a prerequisite for beginning.

Mobile streaming is convenient when you want to broadcast on the move. Before planning around it, confirm that your channel meets the mobile-specific eligibility rules: the cited instructions list at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live restriction in the last 90 days, and live streaming enabled. They also list Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+.

Use an encoder for gameplay or a produced show

An encoder is appropriate when the stream needs a game capture, screen share, overlays, several video sources, or external audio. The exact buttons vary by encoder, but the YouTube workflow is to create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, copy the stream details into the encoder, begin sending the feed, and check the preview before making the event public.

  5. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, verify that the intended viewers can access the event, and monitor the audio and video before and during the broadcast.

Broadcast from a console

Supported modern consoles can stream gameplay directly without a separate computer encoder. Test before the real broadcast

  • Make a test stream before a scheduled event; use public or unlisted visibility as appropriate for the test.
  • Check the live preview in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, rather than relying only on what the encoder or phone displays locally.
  • Listen for clean, correctly routed audio and check that the picture is stable and framed as intended.
  • Confirm that the intended audience can open the stream using the visibility setting you selected.
  • For encoder streams, start setup early and keep the live dashboard available so you can monitor the feed.

A test can catch the practical problems that are easy to miss during setup: the wrong microphone, a blocked camera permission, an incorrect stream key, or a stream set to a visibility other than the one you intended.

  • Live streaming is not available yet: Complete channel verification and activation, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check whether the channel has a live restriction from the previous 90 days.
  • The mobile app does not offer live streaming: Check the mobile subscriber threshold, channel verification and restriction status, whether live streaming is enabled, and the device requirements in YouTube’s current mobile instructions.
  • The preview has no picture or sound: Recheck browser or app permissions and confirm the selected camera and microphone. If using an encoder, verify that the correct sources are active.
  • The encoder does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm that it is sending to the stream details and key for the intended YouTube event, then wait for the preview to appear. Keep the key private.
  • The audience cannot open the stream: Check the event’s visibility and confirm access using the account or viewing context intended for your audience.
  • The stream looks or sounds wrong after it starts: Monitor the YouTube preview and audio during the broadcast, then correct the selected input or production source at its origin.
