You do not need pilot training or aviation equipment to ride as a passenger. In the United States, a commercial balloon pilot carrying paying passengers must hold a second-class medical certificate; voluntary safety accreditation is a separate matter.
What happens on a hot-air balloon flight?
A hot-air balloon is an aircraft sustained by heated air. The pilot controls altitude by heating the air inside the envelope to climb and allowing it to cool or venting hot air to descend. The balloon moves with the air currents, so passengers do not steer it and the pilot generally cannot promise an exact route or a return to the launch field. Where the balloon can travel depends on wind and safe landing options. The FAA Balloon Flying Handbook explains balloon systems, weather, preflight activity and landing procedures; the FAA’s Piloted Balloons overview describes balloons as lighter-than-air aircraft that are not engine driven.

A passenger ride is distinct from learning to fly. Your useful preparation is practical: compare operators, check eligibility and booking terms, dress for the conditions, and listen closely to the pilot.
How to choose and book a balloon operator
Before paying, get clear answers about who will operate the flight and what the booking actually includes. In the United States, the FAA requires commercial balloon pilots carrying paying passengers to hold a second-class medical certificate. The FAA’s 2022 rule announcement also reported that it had worked with the Balloon Federation of America (BFA) on a multi-tier safety accreditation program. BFA accreditation standards are voluntary, not a legal requirement for every operator. Ask what credentials or voluntary safety program the operator follows, rather than assuming accreditation is universal. The FAA’s announcement quotes then-Acting Administrator Billy Nolen saying passengers could “rest assured” about the medical requirements; that statement concerns pilot medical certification, not a guarantee that a particular flight is risk-free. See the FAA announcement on commercial balloon pilot medical requirements.

What if the weather is bad?
Weather is central to balloon operations, and a pilot may cancel rather than launch when conditions are unsuitable. Before booking, ask when and how the go/no-go decision will be communicated, what happens to your fare after a weather cancellation, and whether you can reschedule or receive a refund. Check voucher expiry, whether you need to reserve a backup date, and the terms if you cancel for another reason. These are operator-specific contract terms, not universal rules. A local Columbus Aeronauts / Central Ohio Ballooning FAQ describes that operator’s own policies; do not assume they apply elsewhere.
Passenger requirements: age, height, mobility and health
There is no single passenger age, height or physical-readiness standard established for all balloon rides. Ask the operator about child minimum age or height, whether passengers must stand throughout, how high the basket sides are, and what climbing or stepping into the basket involves. If you have a mobility limitation, ask specifically what assistance and access the operator can provide; do not assume every basket or launch site is accessible.

If you have a recent injury, surgery, pregnancy or another health concern, contact the operator before booking and consult an appropriate clinician about your individual circumstances. A passenger guide notes that a flight could aggravate a prior injury, but it cannot determine whether a particular person is fit to fly. Rules and accommodations vary by operator and location. The Sun Catchers passenger guide offers practical examples of the questions passengers may need to ask, not a universal eligibility policy.
What should I wear?
Dress for the weather and for time outdoors before and after the flight. Practical clothing and closed-toe shoes are the sensible baseline; sturdy walking or hiking shoes may help on rural fields that are rough or wet, but special aviation footwear is not required. Check your operator’s instructions. One passenger guide notes that the outing may keep you outdoors for several hours, so consider the forecast for the whole schedule, not just the expected flight.

Ask what you may bring and how to secure it. Keep your hands free while getting into the basket and listening to instructions, and stow a phone or camera during launch or landing if the pilot asks.
What to expect at launch, in flight and on landing
The pilot or crew may handle inflation and other preparation before passengers board. Stay attentive throughout: follow the instructions given for your particular balloon, basket and conditions. The FAA handbook says passengers should be told where to stand, which way to face, how to position feet and knees, where to hold, and to remain in the basket after touchdown until directed to exit.

For landing, the FAA’s passenger guidance instructs passengers to face the direction of travel, bring feet and knees together with knees bent, hold firmly in two places, and stay inside the basket. A landing may be firm; the FAA handbook tells pilots to prepare passengers for that possibility. An NTSB-hosted balloon flight manual extract likewise stresses paying close attention to the preflight briefing and practicing a hold-on before takeoff. Do not jump out when the basket touches down: wait until the pilot says it is safe to exit.
