1. Choose what to sell and how to source it
Decide whether your store will specialize in a category such as vintage apparel or offer a deliberate mix of goods. A focused niche can make sourcing, storage, photography, and listing more consistent; a broader selection may require more varied handling and research.

Common resale approaches include buying individual secondhand finds, purchasing wholesale inventory, and acquiring discounted or dead-stock retail goods. Each changes your costs, stock consistency, and the amount of sorting and preparation required. Give each item a consistent path from arrival to listing. Inspect it, record its condition, and decide whether cleaning or repair makes sense before assigning it a price. Describe wear and defects plainly rather than treating condition as an afterthought.

- Assign a unique inventory identifier and connect it to the item’s listing.
- Record the acquisition cost and any cleaning or repair work.
- Store items so the listed piece can be found quickly when it sells.
- Screen relevant product categories for hazards or recalls before listing.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says its product-safety laws apply to anyone who sells or distributes consumer products, including thrift and consignment stores. Its resale retailer guidance provides resources for checking hazards and recalls.
3. Price for the whole transaction
Set prices with more than the purchase cost in mind. Account for platform and payment charges, packaging, shipping, time spent preparing and listing the item, and the possibility that some stock will remain unsold. Compare similar items where useful, but do not assume an asking price proves that an item will sell at that amount.
There is no universal profit margin for a thrift store: results depend on sourcing, demand, fees, labor, shipping, and unsold inventory. Check the current fee and payment terms for your chosen channel before settling on prices.

4. Choose a channel that fits your inventory
A marketplace offers a defined listing environment and access to shoppers already using it. A standalone ecommerce store gives you a separate shop and more control over its presentation, but you must do more to attract visitors. Compare channels by inventory eligibility, audience, current costs and payment rules, branding, customer relationship, and shipping and returns workflow.
Marketplace listings
Read the marketplace’s eligibility and prohibited-items rules before buying stock for it. For example, Etsy says it is for items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, and generally does not allow resale of mass-produced goods except for limited exceptions. Its rules may suit qualifying vintage or curated inventory, but they are not blanket permission to list every thrifted item. Review Etsy’s Creativity Standards and prohibited items policy before relying on that channel.
Standalone storefront
A standalone shop may suit a seller who wants a distinct brand and control over the storefront. It does not remove the need to bring in customers, manage stock, and handle orders. Shopify’s resale guide describes building an online store as one route for resellers.

In either case, verify the platform’s current fees, payment terms, eligibility rules, and policies directly; those details can change.

Photograph the actual item and make its condition easy to assess. Include measurements where they help a buyer judge fit, note flaws, and state material or origin only when you have a reliable basis. Do not infer fiber content or country of origin from appearance alone.
For Etsy, listing images must follow the platform’s rules, and sellers must comply with its policies. The Federal Trade Commission also advises marketplace shoppers to examine item photos, descriptions, returns, and shipping terms; those same details are practical prompts for building clear listings. 6. Plan storage, packing, and shipping
Before launch, decide where stock will live, how an order will be matched to the right item, what packaging you will use, and who will fulfill shipments. Define a simple routine for confirming the order, checking the item, packing it, and recording that it has shipped.
If you ship orders yourself, a digital shipping scale can help you weigh parcels for postage. It is optional: choose equipment to match your shipping workflow rather than buying tools before you know what you need.

7. Check legal and safety obligations before selling
For U.S. sellers, requirements depend on the business, products, and places where it operates and sells. Check current state and local government guidance for business registration, licenses, sales tax, resale permits, and other applicable rules. Etsy notes that its platform does not require a business license, but sellers remain responsible for laws that apply to their business; platform onboarding does not replace legal compliance. See Etsy’s small-business legal guidance as well as the relevant government sources for your location.

Textile labeling
FTC guidance says most textile and wool products must bear a label stating fiber content, country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or another business responsible for marketing or handling the item. Care-labeling rules and truthful “Made in the USA” claims can also matter. Applicability depends on the product and your role, so consult the FTC’s textile guidance and labeling requirements. Do not guess at missing fiber or origin information.
Consumer-product safety
Make recall and hazard screening part of intake when relevant to the category. CPSC’s resale retailer resources explain that resellers are not outside consumer-product safety law simply because an item is used.
Marketplace seller verification
The FTC’s INFORM Consumers Act guidance concerns marketplaces’ collection and verification duties for certain high-volume third-party sellers. It is not a rule that applies identically to every small seller; definitions and thresholds matter. Review the FTC’s INFORM Consumers Act guidance against your own circumstances.
