Start with a short walk you can comfortably repeat, at a time and on a route that suit you. Add time or distance gradually, and work toward the adult goal of at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week. You do not need to reach that goal before walking can benefit you: some activity is better than none.
How do I start walking for exercise?
- Choose an easy time and route. Pick somewhere convenient and pleasant, such as a nearby street, park or indoor space. Put the walk in your calendar or attach it to a routine you already have, like a lunch break or the time after dinner.
- Make the first walks manageable. Start with a duration and distance that feel realistic for your current activity level. There is no single minimum walk or beginner schedule that suits everyone.
- Repeat, then build gradually. Keep a frequency you can sustain. When your current walks feel comfortable, gradually add time or distance rather than making a sudden jump.
- Build toward the weekly goal over time. The CDC recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week. It can be divided into shorter sessions; 30 minutes on five days is one example, not a required schedule. This goal can include aerobic activities other than walking. Adults are also advised to do muscle-strengthening activity on two days a week.
The weekly figure is a destination to work toward, not a pass-or-fail threshold. If you have time for only a short walk, take it; shorter bouts and everyday walking still contribute activity.

How fast should I walk?
A brisk walk is quicker than a stroll, but you do not need to hit an exact speed. The NHS gives about 3 miles per hour as a rough guide and suggests the talk test: at a brisk pace, you can talk but cannot sing comfortably. Treat both the speed and the test as practical cues, not rigid standards.

Choose an effort that feels appropriate to you. CDC guidance says moderate-intensity activity is safe for most people. If you have a chronic health condition, ask a health professional what type and amount of activity is suitable. If you are inactive and have a disability or overweight, CDC advises getting advice before starting vigorous activity.

Fit it into the week
Look for a regular opening in your schedule and reserve it for walking. If setting aside a full session is difficult, walk during errands, part of a commute or a lunch break. You can count shorter sessions toward your weekly activity.
Make it enjoyable
Choose a route and time you like, and vary the scenery or destination when a familiar loop gets dull. Parks, riverside paths, heritage trails and other local spaces can offer alternatives.
