To start a low-latency stream with Wowza, create a stream in the current Wowza Video interface, choose an ingest type and a region near your source, configure your camera or encoder with the connection details Wowza provides, then test the actual playback workflow. Choose WebRTC for near-real-time interaction, or tune HLS when its broader delivery path better fits your audience; no single setting guarantees end-to-end latency.
Wowza’s current setup documentation uses the name Wowza Video. The title’s “Wowza Streaming Cloud” refers to the older product name, so labels and options in a current account may differ from legacy guides.

Before you create the stream: check access and source compatibility
You need access to the applicable Wowza Video service in your account, a live source such as a camera or encoder, and a playback workflow suited to your latency target and audience. Wowza documents RTMP, SRT, RTSP, WebRTC, and file input workflows. Its listed encoder and camera types include vMix, Epiphan, Telestream, LiveU, Teradek, and Matrox; confirm the exact device, protocol, and codec combination in the device manual and your account before relying on it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If you already have a camera or encoder, check which ingest protocols and codecs it can output.
- If you do not have a compatible source, an H.264 live streaming encoder is one equipment category to consider; a separate encoder is not required for every setup.
- Decide whether you need interactive, near-real-time viewing or a more conventional stream with some delay. Also consider audience size, playback compatibility, available bandwidth, and whether transcoding is needed.
Create a Wowza stream
- Open the Wowza Video interface. Sign in to the account with the relevant service access and start creating a stream using the current interface’s stream-creation workflow.
- Choose the input type. Select the ingest workflow that matches the source and encoder—for example, RTMP, SRT, RTSP, or WebRTC. The available choices depend on the account and workflow.
- Select a broadcast region. Choose a region close to the source location. Wowza recommends proximity to the broadcast source for performance; it is not a guarantee of a particular viewer-side latency.
- Save the generated connection details. Wowza provides the information needed to connect the source. Keep it available while configuring the encoder, and use the exact server, stream, or protocol details for the selected input.
Connect the camera or encoder
- In the source device’s streaming settings, select the protocol or workflow you chose in Wowza.
- Enter the connection details generated for that Wowza stream. Field names vary by device, so map each Wowza value to the corresponding field in the encoder manual rather than assuming every device uses the same labels.
- Set the source output to a codec and format accepted by the selected Wowza workflow and downstream playback path. Check the device and Wowza documentation for the exact supported settings.
- Start the source transmission, then confirm in Wowza that the stream is receiving input before testing playback.
Wowza identifies vMix, Epiphan, Telestream, LiveU, Teradek, and Matrox among its encoder or camera input types. That list does not mean every model or configuration is interchangeable; verify protocol and codec compatibility for the specific device.

Choose a delivery path for the latency you need
| Workflow | When it may fit | Documented latency context | Tradeoffs and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard WebRTC | Near-real-time viewing or interaction where the audience and playback workflow suit WebRTC. | Wowza’s 2026 documentation says standard WebRTC may be appropriate for audiences below 300 viewers or when other delivery protocols are also desired. That is Wowza’s documented audience context, not a universal capacity limit. | Check playback support and the source-to-player path. Latency depends on encoding, buffering, network conditions, and whether transcoding is required. |
| Real-Time Streaming at Scale | A low-latency workflow for larger audiences, if the account has the required service and license. | Wowza states that Real-Time Streaming at Scale provides half-second latency. This is a vendor claim, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for every viewer and network. | It is a separately licensed feature, and Wowza says it is not available in the free trial. Confirm eligibility and licensing with the account before designing around it. |
| HLS over HTTPS | When HLS is the desired delivery path and its compatibility and delay profile fit the audience. | Wowza’s API documents a low_latency setting for HLS-HTTPS; it is false by default. Its REST API guide describes reducing the default 10-second segment to 2 seconds, with 8–10 seconds described as achievable. |
Smaller packets and segments can increase network overhead. Test on representative connections and devices; aggressive tuning can make playback less resilient. |
These figures describe different products and configurations and should not be compared as if they came from one test. In particular, Wowza’s Streaming Engine WebRTC figures below are not performance promises for Wowza Video streams.
Tune HLS carefully if you use it
For HLS-HTTPS, Wowza’s API exposes a low_latency setting. The documented default is false; enabling it disables incoming and sort packet buffers and sends smaller packets, which can reduce delay while increasing network overhead. Treat this as a tradeoff to test, not a universal improvement.

A separate REST API guide describes lowering HLS segment duration from a 10-second default to 2 seconds and says 8–10 seconds is achievable. Segment duration and the API’s low_latency setting are related to delay but are not interchangeable claims. Confirm the current account’s supported controls and the playback path before changing them.
A legacy Wowza Streaming Cloud guide describes low-latency HLS as reaching as little as 10 seconds, with bandwidth overhead and possible stalls on weak connections. It also says that setting did not reduce latency on the hosted webpage. This is legacy behavior: verify current options and hosted-player behavior in your account rather than assuming the old interface or result still applies.

Test playback and measure the real path
- Use the intended player. Test the same playback protocol, player, browser, and device combination your audience will use. A successful ingest does not prove that the chosen viewer path is low-latency.
- Compare source and playback timing. Use a visible clock or another time reference in the source and compare it with playback. Test more than one network condition and repeat after any encoder, buffering, or delivery change.
- Check the full chain. Source encoding, encoder buffering, Wowza processing, delivery protocol, player buffering, and the viewer’s network can all contribute delay. A low-latency option affects only part of this chain.
- Test for stability as well as speed. Smaller packets or segments may add overhead, and inadequate bandwidth can produce stalls. Prefer the lowest delay that remains reliable on the connections and devices that matter to your audience.
For Wowza Streaming Engine’s WebRTC workflow specifically, Wowza documents expected latency of one second or less for passthrough streams and two seconds or less when transcoding is required. Those are workflow-specific vendor expectations; they do not establish the latency of every Wowza Video setup. Wowza also notes that encoder frame buffering remains a factor.
Troubleshoot common low-latency setup problems
Wowza does not receive the source
- Possible cause: The encoder is using the wrong input workflow or an incorrect server, stream, or protocol value.
- What to do: Compare the device fields against the connection details generated for this stream. Confirm the selected protocol in both places and consult the encoder manual for field mapping.
The stream arrives, but playback is not low-latency
- Possible cause: The selected player or delivery path adds buffering, or the stream is using a different workflow than the one associated with the latency expectation.
- What to do: Verify the actual playback protocol and player, then test the complete source-to-viewer path. Do not apply Streaming Engine WebRTC figures to an HLS or other Wowza Video workflow.
Playback stalls after lowering HLS delay
- Possible cause: Smaller packets or segments increase network overhead, or the viewer connection cannot sustain the delivery rate.
- What to do: Test with representative connections, reduce how aggressively you tune for latency, and prioritize stable playback over the smallest delay.
Latency is higher when transcoding is enabled
- Possible cause: Transcoding adds processing time in the Streaming Engine WebRTC workflow.
- What to do: Check whether the source format can be passed through and whether passthrough is suitable for your stream. Wowza’s documented Streaming Engine expectations distinguish one second or less for passthrough from two seconds or less when transcoding is required.
The legacy low-latency option does not affect the hosted webpage
- Possible cause: The 2017 Streaming Cloud guide says its low-latency HLS setting did not reduce delay on the hosted webpage.
- What to do: Confirm the current account’s player and delivery behavior. Test with the playback path your audience will actually use instead of relying on that legacy setting.
