1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stabilize screenshots for visual tests, control both what the application renders and the environment that renders it. Put the app in a known state, wait for an observable ready condition, use a fixed browser and viewport, prevent motion, then capture the smallest region that matches the regression risk. Review real visual changes instead of raising a page-wide difference threshold to make failures disappear.
Why visual tests become flaky
A screenshot records the page at one moment. If data, fonts, viewport, browser, animation, or page readiness differs between runs, the pixels can differ even when the code change is harmless. Conversely, a permissive comparison threshold can hide a meaningful regression. Stabilize the inputs first; tune comparison settings only when you understand the remaining variation.

Cypress’s official guidance puts the key timing rule plainly: “Best Practice: Take a snapshot only after you confirm the page is done changing.” Cypress Visual Testing also explains that operating systems, browser versions, display scaling, and installed fonts can affect pixels.
A repeatable workflow for screenshot tests
-
Drive the app into a known state
Use fixed fixtures or stub API responses so the test receives the same content each run. If the screen contains dates, countdowns, or other clock-dependent output, freeze time. Avoid depending on live data that can change independently of the code under test.

-
Wait for the intended state, not an arbitrary delay
Assert that the expected content or component is visible, or wait for the specific network response that populates it, before capturing. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. The useful condition is the application state the screenshot is meant to represent.
-
Pin the rendering environment
Set a fixed viewport and keep browser version, operating system, display scaling, and installed fonts consistent between baseline generation and comparison. Where practical, run both in the same CI image or pinned container. A baseline created on one machine can show environment differences when compared on another.
-
Stop motion from changing the frame
Disable or finish CSS transitions and animations before capture. JavaScript-driven motion also needs a deterministic state. Playwright screenshot assertions disable CSS animations, transitions, and Web Animations by default; Cypress cautions that its action-command animation settings do not stop unrelated page animations from appearing mid-capture. See the Playwright PageAssertions API and Cypress guidance.

Capture the surface that matches the risk
Compare a component or element when the regression concern is local; this reduces unrelated page changes becoming failures. Use a full-page capture when the purpose is to catch page layout changes. Do not use a small region merely to hide a problem that affects the whole page.
-
Mask only truly uncontrolled content
If a small region cannot reasonably be made deterministic, mask that region rather than loosening the comparison for the entire page. Keep the mask as narrow as possible so it does not conceal adjacent layout or styling defects. Both Cypress and Playwright document masking approaches.
-
Review and update baselines deliberately
When a screenshot changes, inspect the diff and determine whether the change is intended. Update the reference only after confirming that the new appearance is correct; a baseline update should be a reviewed change, not a routine way to clear a failing test.

Playwright and Cypress: what each provides
| Workflow | Capture and comparison | Baseline and review |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() captures and compares. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to be identical before comparison. Options include animation handling, locator masks, a capture stylesheet, CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale, and accepted pixel differences. |
The first execution generates a reference; subsequent runs compare against it. See Playwright visual comparisons. |
| Cypress | Core Cypress provides cy.screenshot() capture, but image comparison comes from plugins or integrations rather than the core command itself. |
With local plugins, the team manages baseline storage, updates, diff artifacts, and review. Hosted services may manage rendering, baselines, and web or pull-request review. Cypress’s documentation page, last updated Sep. 20, 2026, lists examples including Applitools, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io; this is not an exhaustive market list. See Cypress Visual Testing. |
The practical choice depends on whether local control or managed review and rendering coverage matters more. Cypress characterizes open-source plugins as free and keeping images in the team’s infrastructure, while commercial offerings are paid subscriptions and upload snapshots for hosted rendering. Check current vendor plans and data policies directly; framework documentation is not a vendor contract.

Playwright example: wait for state, then compare
This test uses a deterministic route fixture, fixes the viewport, checks that the page has reached the expected state, and then takes a screenshot assertion. Adapt the path and fixture data to the application. Install Playwright Test and configure the test project to use the same browser and environment when creating and checking baselines.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account summary visual state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.route('**/api/account/summary', async route => {
await route.fulfill({
status: 200,
contentType: 'application/json',
body: JSON.stringify({ name: 'Alex Example', balance: '$125.00' }),
});
});
await page.goto('/account');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account summary' }))
.toBeVisible();
await expect(page.getByTestId('account-balance')).toHaveText('$125.00');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-summary.png', {
fullPage: false,
animations: 'disabled',
});
});
Playwright’s API documents a default perceptual color threshold of 0.2. Treat thresholds as comparison policy, not a first-line fix for flaky captures: first make the state and rendering conditions repeatable. If a threshold or mask is needed for residual variation, keep it narrow and explain why in the test. See PageAssertions options.

Cypress example: assert before capture
Cypress core can capture a screenshot after the application assertion passes. To compare images, add a comparison plugin or integration that fits the project; the core command alone does not perform image comparison.
describe('account summary visual state', () => {
it('captures the loaded account summary', () => {
cy.viewport(1280, 800);
cy.intercept('GET', '/api/account/summary', {
statusCode: 200,
body: { name: 'Alex Example', balance: '$125.00' },
});
cy.visit('/account');
cy.findByRole('heading', { name: 'Account summary' }).should('be.visible');
cy.get('[data-testid="account-balance"]').should('have.text', '$125.00');
cy.screenshot('account-summary');
});
});
The example uses Testing Library’s Cypress query command findByRole; if it is not installed in your project, use a selector supported by your setup, such as cy.contains('h1', 'Account summary'). Add the chosen plugin’s comparison command after the readiness assertions and configure its baseline workflow explicitly.

Troubleshooting flaky visual comparisons
- The failure moves between runs: check for changing API data, asynchronous content, timers, random values, or a capture taken before rendering completes. Stub the variable input and assert the state that should appear.
- Text differs despite unchanged styles: confirm browser and operating-system versions, font availability, and display scaling match the baseline environment.
- A control appears in different positions: look for animations, transitions, delayed layout shifts, or images and fonts that have not loaded when the capture occurs. Wait for meaningful readiness and disable or finish motion.
- Only a third-party region changes: stub it if possible. Otherwise, mask just that element and retain checks around it so its changing dimensions or surrounding layout do not go unnoticed.
- Every pixel looks shifted: check viewport dimensions, screenshot scale, and whether the baseline and test use the same rendering environment before changing comparison thresholds.
- Failures disappear after raising a threshold: revert the broad relaxation and inspect the diff. A larger allowed difference may silence noise, but it can also pass real visual changes.
Performance, reliability, and cost choices
Local capture and comparison keep the workflow within the configured test environment, but the team owns browser consistency, baseline storage, diff artifacts, and review. Hosted visual testing can centralize review and offer managed rendering coverage; it introduces a service subscription and snapshot uploads. The exact coverage, terms, and current prices vary by vendor, so verify them with the provider before adopting a service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use full-page screenshots for every visual test?
No. Use a component or element capture for a localized regression risk, and a full-page capture when page-level layout is what you need to verify.
Does a passing screenshot test prove the page is accessible?
No. Image comparison checks rendered appearance, not every accessibility requirement. Pair it with accessibility checks, including text-contrast testing.
