To stabilize images in visual tests, make the page state repeatable before adjusting pixel tolerances: fix test data and viewport, wait for the actual UI and its resources to be ready, control animation, and keep the browser environment consistent. In Playwright, toHaveScreenshot() already waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing against the baseline. Mask only content that is genuinely uncontrollable; masks and generous thresholds can hide real regressions.
Why visual tests produce flaky screenshots
A visual test is unstable when repeated captures of the same intended UI state differ. The cause is often not the comparison algorithm but a page that was captured under different conditions.

- Motion: CSS transitions or JavaScript animation may be captured on different frames.
- Late resources: fonts, images, or other assets may load after the screenshot.
- Variable content: timestamps, randomized values, rotating promotions, and user-specific data can change between runs.
- Different render conditions: viewport, browser, operating system, locale, or device scale can affect layout and pixels.
Chromatic’s guidance on debugging unstable tests recommends repeatable input data, including seeded randomness where random data is needed. Its snapshot documentation also notes that network quiescence is a capture heuristic, not proof that every unreliable image or font source has loaded.
Stabilize the page before comparing pixels
1. Define one intended state
Keep the route, viewport, locale, user state, and time-dependent inputs fixed. Use deterministic fixtures for data that appears in the screenshot. If randomized data is required, seed it so repeated runs produce the same values.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Wait for a meaningful readiness condition
Prefer a condition tied to the UI—such as the expected heading appearing or a loading indicator disappearing—over an arbitrary sleep. Also ensure relevant images and fonts are ready when they affect the region being asserted. A delay can be useful for a known application behavior, but elapsed time alone does not establish that the desired content has rendered.
Playwright’s auto-waiting and retrying assertions wait for expected conditions; its stability checks account for whether an element is moving or has completed animation. Match the readiness condition to the state your screenshot needs.

3. Control animation
When motion is irrelevant to the visual assertion, disable CSS animations and transitions for the capture. For JavaScript-driven motion, pause the application animation or move the page to a known stable state. Chromatic explicitly says its hosted capture cannot disable JavaScript-driven animations, so authors must pause them.
4. Keep the rendering setup consistent
Use a deliberate viewport and the same browser project for the baseline and each comparison. A hosted capture service can standardize browser environments, but it cannot make dynamic application data or application-specific JavaScript animation deterministic by itself.

Use Playwright screenshot assertions deliberately
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last capture with the expectation. That reduces failures caused by a transient frame; it does not replace deterministic data, meaningful readiness checks, or a consistent viewport. See the PageAssertions documentation for assertion options and the visual comparison guide for volatile-content filtering and tolerance configuration.
A minimal test might look like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account page visual state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('/account');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account.png');
});
The heading assertion illustrates waiting for the actual UI rather than sleeping for a guessed interval. Add application-specific setup for deterministic fixtures, locale, or time when those inputs affect the page. Keep the project and viewport stable between baseline generation and comparison.

Choose masks and thresholds without hiding regressions
Mask only specific volatile regions
A mask excludes or covers pixels from a selected region; use it for content that is intentionally variable and cannot reasonably be fixed. Keep the mask narrowly scoped. Masking a large panel means the test no longer checks that panel for visual regressions. Playwright supports locator masks and a custom mask color through screenshot assertion options.

A tolerance permits a limited amount of image difference; it does not stabilize the page. Tune it only after state, resources, animation, and environment are controlled. Playwright supports maxDiffPixels, including project-level configuration. A broad tolerance can allow genuine layout or styling changes through, so choose a narrow value appropriate to the test rather than increasing it until failures disappear.

Diagnose a failing visual diff
- Compare expected, actual, and diff images. Identify whether the mismatch is a moving element, late or missing asset, changed data, or a true UI change.
- Re-run under the same setup. Confirm route, viewport, browser project, locale, user state, and test fixtures match the baseline conditions.
- Check readiness and motion. Wait for the relevant UI and assets; disable CSS motion or pause JavaScript animation where the assertion expects a static state.
- Correct the source of variation. Freeze a value that matters, seed random inputs, or fix the resource-loading condition. Mask only a specific residual region that cannot be controlled.
- Update the baseline only for an intended change. Do not normalize failed comparisons automatically; first decide whether the difference is the expected result.
Common causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Differences move between runs | Animation or changing data | Disable or pause motion; use fixed or seeded test data. |
| Text wraps differently or appears with a fallback font | Font is not ready at capture time | Wait for the relevant font/resource and make its availability reliable. |
| Images are missing or inconsistent | Asset load timing or an unreliable image source | Wait for the relevant image and investigate the resource source instead of relying on a longer blind delay. |
| The page is stable locally but not in hosted capture | Different rendering environment or viewport | Use consistent browser and viewport conditions; hosted standardization does not freeze app-specific animation or data. |
| Many failures disappear after increasing tolerance | Threshold is compensating for unstable rendering or too broad | Stabilize inputs and capture conditions first; then set a narrow tolerance for unavoidable residual variation. |

If your task is to capture a webpage rather than assert a test baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its cleanup can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the response identifying page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Should I increase the screenshot threshold when a visual test is flaky?
Not as the first fix. First make the rendered state and capture conditions repeatable; use a deliberately narrow tolerance only for residual pixel variation.
Does a hosted visual capture service stop every animation?
No. Chromatic’s documentation says JavaScript-driven animations must be paused by the test author.
