Find Algol, the Demon Star
Algol—also called “The Ghoul”—is a star in Perseus. NASA’s October 2026 observing guide says to look toward the northeastern sky after 9 p.m. That is seasonal guidance, not a fixed viewing time for every place or date; check a current sky calendar for your location and the night you plan to observe. Watch its brightness change
You can see Algol without binoculars or a telescope. To judge its changing brightness, compare it with nearby Almach. Binoculars or a small telescope can make the comparison easier, but they are optional; begin with the unaided-eye view.
What makes the Witch Head Nebula different?
The Witch Head Nebula, also known as IC 2118, is a reflection nebula between Eridanus and Orion. Unlike a star, it does not produce the visible glow itself: dust scatters or reflects light from nearby stars. NASA identifies Rigel as the star illuminating it, and compares the scattering process to why Earth’s daytime sky appears blue. NASA’s October 2026 seasonal guide puts the nebula about 900 light-years away. A separate NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day description says it is about 50 light-years across; the distance and width are different measurements from different NASA sources. Can you see the Witch Head Nebula?
Do not expect to spot it with the naked eye. Kat Troche of the NASA Night Sky Network wrote in October 2026: “Because reflection nebulae rely on nearby starlight to appear visible, they can be difficult to see with the naked eye, especially if they are as far away as this one.” NASA recommends a very large-aperture telescope at low magnification and a dark sky to improve the chance of seeing it. Even with that equipment, a sighting is not guaranteed.

Choose gear for the target

Astrophotography and visual observing have different constraints: a photographed nebula depends on the imaging equipment and sky quality, while visual observing depends on what the eye can detect through the telescope under the conditions at the site. A successful photograph does not mean the nebula will look similarly obvious through an eyepiece.
