Look for a gap between a founder’s certainty and the evidence behind a specific claim—not confidence in their speaking style. Ask what supports the claim, what assumptions and time horizon it depends on, how uncertain the founder is, and what evidence would change their view. Then compare earlier forecasts with what actually happened. These are useful diligence questions, not a validated test of founder character or startup success.
What overconfidence can mean
Overconfidence is not one behavior. A 2022 meta-analysis covering 62 primary studies distinguishes three forms: overprecision, overestimation, and overplacement.

- Overprecision: unwarranted certainty about how accurate a belief is. In a pitch, this may appear as a highly certain forecast with no meaningful range or acknowledgment of uncertainty.
- Overestimation: overstating one’s own performance or prospects. A founder might make a claim about what their company can achieve that is stronger than the supporting evidence.
- Overplacement: overestimating one’s standing relative to others. A claim of superiority is difficult to assess unless the founder identifies the comparison group and the basis for comparison.
These distinctions help focus questions on a claim rather than turning a confident delivery into a personality judgment.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The 2022 meta-analysis found effects that vary by form and entrepreneurial stage. Overconfidence can support opportunity assessment, venture creation, and innovativeness, while being negatively associated with venture performance at later stages. That aggregate result does not establish that overconfidence will help or harm a particular startup.
#1 Best Overall
A study of founder CEOs at S&P 1500 companies found more optimistic language, a greater likelihood of issuing earnings forecasts that were too high, and behavior consistent with believing their firms were undervalued compared with professional CEOs. Those findings concern leaders of established public companies; they do not validate a way to diagnose overconfidence in an early-stage pitch.
Investors also need to test their own judgment. One study of venture-capital decision-making reported that 96% of participating VCs had confidence levels above their prediction accuracy. This figure describes that study’s participants, not all VCs today. Its practical implication is to use structured evidence checks rather than relying on confidence—whether the founder’s or the investor’s—as a substitute for accuracy.
Questions to test a pitch claim
Ask for the evidence behind consequential claims, then probe the assumptions and uncertainty. These prompts are practical questions, not a validated screening checklist.

- What evidence supports this estimate, and when was it collected?
- What assumptions connect this market estimate to customers you can actually reach?
- Which forecast are you least certain about, and what is a reasonable range?
- What result would make you revise this view?
- Which earlier forecast can we compare with what happened?
- What evidence would change your view of the strongest competitor or substitute?
The useful signal is not whether the founder has an immediate answer to every question. It is whether the claim can be examined: its basis, assumptions, time horizon, uncertainty, and possible disconfirmation should be clear enough to discuss.

Warning signs to investigate, not verdicts
- Certainty that appears stronger than the quality or quantity of supporting evidence.
- Forecasts presented without clear assumptions or a time horizon.
- Claims of superiority with no defined reference group.
- An inability or unwillingness to describe what evidence could disconfirm a claim.
Each is a reason to investigate the specific claim, not proof of a stable trait. The cited studies do not establish these cues as a validated instrument for screening startup pitches.

When comparing founders’ claims, use the same evidence-focused questions for each rather than rewarding the more persuasive presentation. The following axes are practical ways to organize that comparison; the cited studies do not validate a scoring rubric.

Rank #4
- Evidence strength and recency: What supports the claim, and how current is it?
- Forecast calibration: How did earlier predictions compare with outcomes?
- Assumptions and horizon: Are the premises and time period explicit?
- Willingness to update: Does the founder identify what new evidence could change the view?
