Compare the card with official images, use a bright-light check as one clue, and get help from a specialist shop when you are still unsure. For sealed booster packs, be especially cautious: Pokémon says fakes can be difficult to distinguish, and a price dramatically below suggested retail is a warning sign.
Start with the listing and seller
Before buying, read the description carefully. Check whether the seller says the item is an official Pokémon TCG product, a replica, or a custom item; do not assume a listing is official just because it uses Pokémon artwork or a familiar product name. Be wary of language such as “replica” or “metal card.” The Pokémon Card Game’s official Japanese site has warned about unauthorized merchandise using Pokémon TCG works and trademarks sold under descriptions such as these: official notice dated September 19, 2023.

Consider the price in context. Pokémon Support identifies a booster-pack price dramatically below suggested retail as a strong warning sign, but price alone does not prove that an individual item is counterfeit. Pokémon Support also says flea markets account for the highest instances of counterfeit sales reported to the company; that is the company’s reported experience, not evidence that every flea-market seller is suspect. How to check an individual card
Compare it with an official reference image
Look up the card in the official Pokémon Trading Card Database and compare its identity and appearance with the listing or card in hand. TCGplayer’s guide also recommends checking a card against a reputable database. A mismatch is a reason to investigate further, not by itself a complete authentication verdict.

Hold it up to bright light
Pokémon Support recommends holding a suspect card up to a bright light, noting that counterfeit cards are often see-through. Treat this as one clue rather than a guarantee: a light check cannot independently establish authenticity. A small bright LED flashlight can make the check convenient, but it does not authenticate the card on its own.
Ask a specialist when evidence is unclear
If the reference-image comparison and light check leave doubt—or the card is valuable—ask a shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate it. This is particularly useful when clues conflict and you do not want to rely on a visual guess.

Why sealed booster packs need extra caution
Pokémon Support says fake booster packs can be very difficult to distinguish from genuine ones. That makes the listing context especially important: examine the seller’s description and price, and be cautious if the pack is offered dramatically below suggested retail. The price is a warning signal, not proof that a particular pack is fake; a photograph or brief visual check may not settle the question.

- Save the listing, seller details, order confirmation, and photos of the item that arrives. These records can help you explain what was represented and what you received.
- Compare a single card with the official Pokémon TCG database; do not treat a database match as a guarantee that the physical card is genuine.
- For marketplace purchases, review the platform’s current buyer-protection terms before relying on them. TCGplayer’s search-result guide mentions its Buyer Safeguard and recommends checking cards against a reputable database, but detailed current terms are not established here.
- If the item is a sealed pack or doubts remain after delivery, seek an evaluation from a specialist trading-card shop rather than relying on one visual clue.
What a quick check cannot establish
The official guidance cited here does not provide a definitive technical checklist for fonts, set symbols, holofoil patterns, card stock, or edges. Do not treat any one of those details—or a single bright-light result—as an official pass/fail test. There is no single test in this guidance that guarantees a card or pack is authentic.
