To check whether a ChatGPT or AI-tool login page is real, inspect the full hostname in your browser’s address bar, then open the service independently using an address you already trust or a saved bookmark. Don’t rely on a logo, familiar design, search result, displayed link text, or urgent message. If you may have entered credentials on a fake site, secure the real account promptly.

How do I know if a ChatGPT website is real?

Check the actual hostname—the address between the browser’s protocol and the next slash—not just the words shown on a button or link. A service name in a longer hostname or subdomain does not prove the service provider owns the site. For example, a page can display a ChatGPT logo and still be controlled by someone else.

OpenAI’s support guidance identifies chatgpt.com and openai.com as example trusted destinations. Its login troubleshooting guide points users to chatgpt.com/auth/login. Addresses and sign-in routes can change, so check current official guidance if a route differs.

For other AI services, use the provider’s official site or a bookmark you saved after verifying it. Don’t assume a search result or sponsored listing is safe simply because it appears near the top.

Is this ChatGPT login link safe?

If an email, text, direct message, or webpage asks you to sign in unexpectedly, don’t follow its login link. Open a new browser tab and type the known official address yourself, or use a bookmark. OpenAI advises: “Always double-check the email address and URL to make sure they are from a trusted source.”

Compare the link’s displayed text with its real destination before opening it. CISA recommends this check; if you cannot tell where a link leads, do not use it. Be especially wary of shortened or disguised links in suspicious messages. OpenAI also says not to share account login details over social media; never send a password or verification code through an unverified link or message.

A link appearing in ChatGPT is not automatically safe either. OpenAI warns that generated links may lead to destinations supplied by third parties, so inspect the destination before visiting it or entering information.

How can I spot a fake AI website?

  • Check the complete hostname. Read the address-bar hostname carefully, including its ending. A familiar brand name embedded in a different hostname is not proof of legitimacy.
  • Verify the route independently. Navigate to the provider’s official address yourself rather than trusting the page that brought you there.
  • Treat urgency as a warning sign. Unexpected prompts to sign in, confirm an account, or provide a verification code deserve caution—especially when delivered by an unsolicited message.
  • Ignore visual reassurance. Logos, page layout, polished copy, and familiar colors can be copied. They do not verify who operates the site.
  • Don’t mistake an account alert for proof of phishing. A login error or suspicious-activity warning does not establish that the page itself is fake. Use the official login route and support guidance to troubleshoot.

Which sign-in protections help if a fake site targets you?

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) can reduce the risk of account takeover, but methods differ in their protection against phishing. OpenAI lists authenticator apps, push notifications, text messages, and passkeys; availability depends on factors including device, country, tier, and account setup. Check your account’s current security settings for the options available to you.

OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security option requires passkeys or physical security keys for eligible enrolled accounts and disables password login. These methods are designed to provide stronger sign-in protection, but not every passkey or authenticator setup works identically. Keep recovery in mind: make sure you have a way to regain access if your device or key is lost, and follow the provider’s instructions for backing up or recovering your sign-in method.

What should I do if I entered my password on a fake ChatGPT site?

  1. Go to the real service independently. Type its official address or use a trusted bookmark; do not return through the suspicious link.
  2. Change the exposed password. If you reused it on other accounts, change it there too. Use a unique password for each account; a password manager can help create and store them.
  3. End active sessions. Sign out of other sessions using the account’s security settings. Enabling MFA alone does not terminate existing sessions.
  4. Enable MFA and review account security. Use the available security settings to turn on MFA, then check security history and active sessions for activity you do not recognize.
  5. Contact official support if compromise is suspected. Reach support from the provider’s genuine website, not through contact details in the suspicious message.
