The safest way to screen a One Piece figure is to verify several independent details together: the exact release, maker marks, packaging and contents, seller identity, price, and the manufacturer’s guidance for that product and region. No single sticker, logo, or price proves authenticity.
Use the checklist below before paying, especially when a marketplace listing uses limited photos or an unusually low price.

Why counterfeit One Piece figures deserve a careful check
Counterfeit One Piece merchandise is a documented enforcement problem, but available figures do not establish a current global counterfeit rate. In a joint release dated January 31, 2014, Bandai, MegaHouse, and BANPRESTO reported that more than 1,000 counterfeit One Piece goods were confiscated during a November 2013 action in Guangzhou, China. The companies identified unusually cheap pricing as a major characteristic of the infringing goods. That is historical enforcement evidence, not a measurement of today’s market share. The broader risk is still active. Bandai Namco Holdings says its AI-based system removes more than 30,000 counterfeit products per year from global e-commerce sites in its discussion of fiscal 2024 activity. Manufacturers also warn that counterfeit items may fail their quality requirements. Bandai says counterfeit goods can have quality and safety shortcomings, while Kotobukiya cautions that many pirate products may not meet its required standards. Step 1: Identify the exact figure, not just the character
“A Luffy figure” is not a precise identity. The same character may appear in multiple lines, scales, editions, countries, and release years, with different boxes and accessories. Write down the exact product before comparing a listing.
Record these identifiers
- Character and version or outfit.
- Figure line, scale, series, or collection.
- Manufacturer and any distributor named on the official product page.
- Official product name and product number, if one exists.
- Original release date, reissue date, or edition.
- Expected accessories, alternate parts, stand, and base.
- Distribution region, because packaging and labels can differ by market.
Search the maker’s official catalog for that exact combination. Compare the seller’s title, photographs, dimensions, colors, pose, base, and accessories with the official release. A listing that matches only the character but not the product line may be describing a different item—or disguising a counterfeit.

Ask for clear, item-specific photographs of every side of the box. Stock renders or a single front image show what the product should look like, not what the seller actually possesses.
Check the front, back, and side panels
- Maker, brand, and series logos should be present where the official release places them.
- The character name, product name, and edition wording should be spelled consistently.
- Copyright and licensing text should appear in the expected location and language.
- Product photographs, illustration style, color blocks, and layout should match the official packaging.
- Barcodes, product numbers, and regional information should be plausible for that release.
- Printing should be sharp and aligned; blurred type, awkward spacing, missing accents, and inconsistent logo proportions deserve further investigation.
One error does not automatically prove a fake: packaging can vary between regions, reissues, and legitimate promotional runs. Treat mismatched wording or missing marks as a prompt to obtain the manufacturer’s version of the box and investigate further.
Match the stated contents to the photographs
Use the official product page to make a parts list. Confirm that the seller shows the figure, base, hands, weapons, facial parts, and other accessories expected for that release. An incomplete used figure can be genuine, so missing parts affect value and condition as well as authenticity. A seller who claims an item is complete but cannot show the contents is adding transaction risk.

Step 3: Inspect the figure, base, and copyright marks
Request close-ups of the face, hair, joints, paint edges, base, and any molded or printed copyright information. Compare those details with official photographs rather than relying on memory or another collector’s version.

- Look for rough seams, soft or distorted sculpting, paint that spills across edges, mismatched skin tones, or parts that do not seat correctly.
- Check that the base shape, peg positions, logos, and molded text correspond to the exact release.
- Read every copyright line. Missing, misspelled, or oddly placed text is a warning sign, although a small item may legitimately use a printed mark instead of a sticker.
- Confirm that the item shown is the item being sold. Photos of a genuine box paired with an unshown figure do not establish that they belong together.
Manufacturers’ own guidance is more reliable than a universal collector rule. Good Smile Company, for example, asks customers seeking help to provide packaging photographs, product photographs, and the copyright mark on the base. Step 4: Treat price as a warning signal, not a verdict
Compare the asking price with the same release in similar condition, in the same currency and region. A dramatic undercut deserves questions because rights holders identify cheap pricing as a common counterfeit characteristic. There is no evidence-backed universal price floor or numeric percentage that separates real from fake. Genuine figures can be cheaper when they are used, incomplete, damaged, out of fashion, overstocked, or being sold in a different market. Conversely, a convincing counterfeit can be priced close to retail. Use price to decide how much verification you need, never as the only authentication test.
Step 5: Investigate the seller and transaction
The seller is part of the evidence. Prefer the manufacturer’s official shop or an authorized retailer, and follow links from the official product page to designated sales sites when those links are provided. This recommendation is explicit in TAMASHII WEB’s guidance.
For marketplace listings, look for
- A verifiable seller identity and a track record with collectible figures.
- Recent, item-specific photos showing all sides of the actual box and figure.
- A precise condition description, including missing parts, repairs, fading, and opened packaging.
- Clear delivery, return, refund, and buyer-protection terms.
- Answers that address your questions instead of pressure to pay immediately.
Be cautious when a seller refuses additional photographs, hides their identity, asks you to move payment into private messages, or claims that returns are impossible. None of these behaviors alone proves that an item is counterfeit, but several together justify walking away.

A fast screening routine before checkout
- Save the official product page. Record the product name, number, release date, dimensions, maker, box design, and listed accessories.
- Request current photos. Ask the seller to photograph every box panel and the figure with a handwritten date or listing identifier. This helps establish that the seller has the item rather than copied images.
- Compare one detail at a time. Check logos, copyright wording, base, colors, pose, accessories, and regional markings against the exact release, not a similar character figure.
- Explain any discount. A used, opened, incomplete, or damaged original may have a sensible reason for being cheaper. “Factory direct” or “same item without the box” is not, by itself, proof of authenticity.
- Confirm the exit route. Pay only through a method with documented buyer protection and a return process you understand.
If the listing fails at several stages, the safest decision is not to buy. Spending a little more with a transparent authorized source is usually less costly than trying to recover money after an unprotected transaction.
How to interpret authenticity stickers and holograms
“Sticker present equals genuine” and “sticker absent equals fake” are unsafe rules. Label programs depend on the maker, product line, release date, exceptions, and distribution region.

When two listings compete, compare them on the same six axes. Do not award a listing a pass simply because it has a familiar logo.

If one listing has better photos and a return path while another is cheaper but evasive, the first offers stronger evidence even if neither can be authenticated from photographs alone.
What to ask before placing the order
- “Please photograph the front, back, both sides, top, and bottom of the box with today’s date.”
- “Please show the figure’s base, copyright mark, serial or product number, and every accessory.”
- “Is this the original release or a reissue, and which region was it sold in?”
- “Are any parts missing, repaired, repainted, or replaced?”
- “What is your return process if the item does not match the listing?”
Save the listing, photographs, messages, receipt, and payment record. Those documents help if the item arrives materially different from the description.

Before paying
Pause rather than trying to rationalize conflicting clues. Ask for the missing photographs, verify the exact release with the maker, and check whether the transaction has meaningful buyer protection. If the seller will not provide evidence or a return route, choose a different source.

Neither source supplies a current worldwide prevalence rate for One Piece figures, a guaranteed detection formula, or a universal price threshold.
