How to Spot and Prevent Deepfakes in Video Content

A reliable deepfake check starts with a video’s source and handling history, then tests its context and claims. Visual clues and detector scores are leads, not proof.

There is no visual tell or detector score that can prove a video is authentic on its own. Check where the file came from and how it was handled, examine the clip in context, and corroborate its important claims independently. Treat visual anomalies and automated results as leads—not verdicts. For consequential decisions, preserve the original and involve a qualified examiner.

What it means to verify a video

Verification is not just a search for an AI-generated face. An investigation may need to establish whether some or all of a video is synthetic or manipulated, how the file was created and transformed, and whether the claim made with it is accurate. Those are related but distinct questions: synthetic media can be used without deception, while a genuine recording can also be presented misleadingly.

NIST’s Examining Digital Media guide says: “When digital media is claimed to be a deepfake, it should be authenticated in order to certify whether the media (in whole or in part) is synthetic or not.” It adds: “During the authentication process, the provenance of the digital media shall be determined.” Provenance means the media’s history through capture, edits, copying, compression, storage and other transformations. A copy or a low-quality, compressed file is not automatically fake.

How to check a suspicious video

Use a process that preserves evidence and tests the video’s story rather than relying on one tell. If the matter could affect someone’s safety, employment, legal position or reputation, avoid making a public accusation based on a quick inspection.

  1. Preserve the file you received. Keep the original file where possible, along with the message, link or other material that came with it. Record when and how you received it, and avoid repeatedly converting or re-encoding it. If the matter may have legal, safety or employment consequences, preserve available metadata and chain-of-custody details too. Metadata can inform an inquiry; it does not prove authenticity by itself.
  2. Trace the source and handling history. Ask who supplied the video, where it first appeared, what device captured it, and whether editing, enhancement, copying, compression or storage steps are known. Treat an unknown or incomplete history as uncertainty, not as proof that the clip is fake.
  3. Check whether the clip has enough context. A short excerpt may omit what happened before or after the moment shown. Look for a fuller recording or other context, and identify the source of the version being circulated.
  4. Verify the claim independently. Compare material claims with independent records or reporting. A video’s apparent realism does not establish that the accompanying caption, date, location or interpretation is true.
  5. Note anomalies without treating them as a checklist. NIST’s identity-proofing standard calls for reviewers in attended remote capture to be trained to notice possible high latency, synchronization problems, and inconsistencies in skin tone or resolution. These are indications to investigate in that specific setting, not conclusive proof or a universal visual test.
  6. Escalate high-stakes cases. Use a qualified examiner and multiple lines of evidence. Ask what media conditions and transformations were tested, what the method can and cannot establish, and what uncertainty remains. A detector score is not an authentication certificate.

Why visual clues and AI detectors can mislead

Visible irregularities can be worth checking, but the available NIST guidance does not establish a universal visual checklist that reliably identifies deepfakes across every kind of video. A single apparent glitch cannot settle authenticity. Nor does a polished-looking clip establish that it is genuine.

Detectors have a narrower task than the broad label “AI detector” suggests. NIST OpenMFC defines video deepfake detection as distinguishing manipulated videos from high-provenance original videos or clips. Other forensic tasks may seek to identify a type of manipulation, establish provenance or localize edits. Ask what a tool actually tests and what conclusion its output supports.

Test conditions matter. NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program highlights generalization and resilience to post-processing such as Gaussian blur and video compression. A result on clean benchmark footage should not automatically be assumed to apply to a social-media copy, resized clip or surveillance recording. NIST’s 2026 GenAI: Deepfakes page reports 45–50% performance degradation when moving from academic evaluation to operational deployment; the page does not provide the underlying study details, metric definition or detector sample needed to treat that figure as a universal estimate.

When comparing tools or processes, ask:

  • What is the task? Does the method look for synthetic generation, face swaps, other manipulation, provenance or the location of edits?
  • What media was tested? Were both genuine and manipulated videos included, with compression, blur, resizing and platform re-encoding relevant to your use case?
  • What errors are reported? Are false positives and false negatives documented for the intended workflow, and can a trained reviewer examine uncertain results?
  • Can the process preserve evidence? Does it retain the source file and provenance information and provide a clear route to human escalation?

NIST’s forensic program stresses evaluation under realistic conditions. NIST SP 800-63A Revision 4 states, for identity proofing, that “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” That requirement is scoped to covered identity-proofing services and workflows; other organizations should adapt controls to their own risks rather than assume the standard governs every sector.

How organizations can reduce the risk of accepting or spreading deceptive video

Build controls around capture, intake and decision-making, not just a detector at the end. NIST SP 800-63A’s prescriptive requirements apply to identity proofing; organizations in other sectors can use the measures below as risk-informed practices, not as a claim that the standard automatically applies to them.

  • Set trusted capture and intake procedures. Define who may submit media, how it is received and what information about capture and editing should accompany it. Use authenticated channels for exchange where appropriate.
  • Keep a documented record of provenance. Preserve originals and record known editing, copying, compression and storage steps. Limit unnecessary transformations when media may later need examination.
  • Evaluate tools against your real conditions. Test with genuine and attack media, relevant post-processing and the actual capture and intake workflow. Document baseline performance and expected false-positive and false-negative rates.
  • Require human review for uncertain or consequential cases. Train staff to recognize possible anomalies, avoid overclaiming what they show, and escalate cases that could materially affect people.
  • Consider capture safeguards where appropriate. NIST’s identity-proofing standard identifies capture sensor authentication or device attestation as possible measures. Whether they fit depends on the workflow and threat model.

What Content Credentials can—and cannot—tell you

Content Credentials describes a provenance approach that can include digitally signed history information, invisible watermarking and digital fingerprinting to help locate associated credentials. When present and intact, these mechanisms can provide useful provenance signals. Their absence does not establish that a video is false, and provenance information alone does not settle whether the content or a claim made with it is truthful.
