Polished grammar and personal details are no longer signs of legitimacy. Judge what the message asks you to do, verify the sender through a separate trusted channel, and avoid unexpected links, attachments, and QR codes.
Why AI-written phishing can be hard to spot
AI can help scammers produce fluent, tailored messages without the spelling, grammar, or translation mistakes people were once taught to look for. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says generative AI can enable convincing interactions and create lure documents without those traditional errors (NCSC assessment). The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center likewise warns that it can be difficult to identify AI-generated content (FBI IC3 public service announcement).

That does not mean every polished message is AI-written, or that every AI-generated message is malicious. Awkward wording is not proof of a scam, either. There is no wording clue here that reliably settles authorship. For your safety decision, focus on whether the message is authentic and what it wants you to do.
What to check in a suspicious message
Whether the contact makes sense
Ask whether you expected the message, have an account with the named organization, or recognize the situation. Unexpected delivery notices, payment requests, account warnings, and document alerts can be lures. A familiar name or logo does not establish that the sender is genuine.

Pressure, emotion, and urgency
Pause if a message threatens a penalty, demands immediate action, provokes fear, or offers a scarce reward. The UK NCSC describes common scam approaches involving authority, urgency, emotion, scarcity, and current events (NCSC guidance on spotting scams). These are reasons to verify, not proof on their own.
The sender and destination
Display names, logos, and message text can be imitated. If you can inspect the sender address or a link destination without opening it, look for a mismatch with the organization’s genuine details. If anything is uncertain, do not click; open the service’s known website or app independently. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) advises users to be cautious of suspicious links and messages (CISA phishing guidance).

The requested action
Treat requests for passwords, sensitive personal or financial information, payments, gift cards, or changes to payment instructions as high-stakes. Confirm them using contact details you already know to be genuine—not details supplied in the message.

Do not open an unexpected attachment or scan an unexpected QR code just to see where it leads. The NCSC warns that QR codes in phishing emails can redirect people to scam websites (NCSC QR code guidance).

How to verify a message safely
- Stop before acting. Do not click, reply with personal information, download a file, or scan a QR code while you assess the message.
- Leave the message’s channel. Contact the person or organization through a phone number, website, or app you already trust, or through an established conversation thread. For workplace requests, use your normal internal confirmation method.
- Ask whether the request is real. Confirm the specific payment, account issue, document, or other action. Do not use a phone number or visit a page supplied by the suspicious message.
- Report a suspicious message. Use your email or messaging provider’s report function, or the appropriate local reporting route. Follow current instructions for your location and service.
In the UK, the NCSC accepts suspicious email reports at [email protected]. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and suggests forwarding phishing emails to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (FTC consumer alert). Reporting options vary by country and provider.

- Shared banking details? Contact your bank using a number you independently verified and follow its instructions.
- Entered a password? Go to the legitimate service’s own website or app, change the password, and follow its account-recovery guidance. Change it on other accounts too if you reused it.
- Used a work device or account? Notify your organization’s IT or security team promptly.
The right recovery steps depend on what you disclosed and which service is involved. Use that service’s official recovery process rather than links in the suspicious message.

Extra protections that reduce risk
Spam filtering can keep some unwanted messages out of view, and multifactor authentication (MFA) can add a layer to account sign-in. CISA recommends phishing-resistant MFA, including FIDO authentication (CISA guidance on implementing phishing-resistant MFA). A FIDO2 security key is one optional form of account protection; it does not identify who wrote a message or validate a request.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

These email authentication mechanisms help receiving servers check whether a company domain authorized a message and handle impostor mail. They are organization-side controls; individual users may need an administrator to configure them (CISA guidance on combating spoofed emails).
These safeguards reduce exposure or strengthen sign-in, but none makes an unexpected request safe to trust automatically. Verification through a separate, trusted channel remains the practical check.
