A slow coding loop is not automatically a slow model. Measure the request setup, time to first byte, response-body transfer, and local patch-and-test work separately; then compare repeated runs at p50 and p99. That makes a long tail easier to investigate without mistaking a spinner—or synthetic example numbers—for a performance result.
What this latency check can tell you
The workflow is a lab harness for diagnosing one remote coding path: send a request, receive a response, apply a patch, and run a focused test. Its purpose is to locate where elapsed time accumulates, not to rank vendors, assess model quality, or establish an SLA.
A single average can hide a small number of very slow runs. Record each run and examine both the median (p50) and the 99th percentile (p99). The former describes the midpoint of the observations; the latter helps expose the slow tail. Neither identifies the cause by itself.
Remote-path measurements require a remote endpoint. A local-only run travels a different path, so its timing is not an interchangeable comparison. Keep the workload and endpoint conditions consistent when comparing configurations.

Which phases to record
Where the client exposes the timings, distinguish connection setup from response waiting and local work. Useful fields include DNS lookup, connection establishment, TLS handshake, time to first byte (TTFB), response-body duration, and total elapsed time. Also record status or error outcome and request and response sizes: a failed or unusually large response can make timing comparisons misleading.
- DNS, connect, and TLS: indicate time spent resolving the host and establishing a secure connection, if the measurement tool reports these separately.
- TTFB: measures the wait until the first response byte. A high value can reflect remote queueing, cold-start behavior, or other parts of the path; it does not prove any single cause.
- Response body: captures time after the first byte while the remaining response arrives. Generation and transfer are both plausible contributors.
- Local work: time patch application and the focused test independently from the request. Slow local work deserves a different fix from a slow remote response.
The official curl man page documents timing variables for DNS, connection, TLS, start-transfer, and total time. Use the available fields as observations, not as proof of a particular cause.

Run a repeatable comparison
- Choose a safe, representative workload. Use dummy content and a focused task that can be repeated. Do not include secrets in requests, and do not send data to a remote service if company policy forbids that egress.
- Measure one complete loop. Track the request and response phases, then separately time patch application and the test. If the client cannot expose a phase, mark it unavailable rather than assigning it a guessed value.
- Write one JSON record per run. Include a run identifier, endpoint/configuration, status or error, byte counts, available phase timings, and local timings. Keep field meanings consistent across runs.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Compare p50 and p99 across the same workload and endpoint conditions. Sample counts such as fifty or two hundred runs are workflow suggestions from the source article, not validated sample-size rules; the displayed p50/p99 figures there are synthetic dry-run output, not a live endpoint benchmark.
- Change one variable at a time. For example, compare a cold connection with a genuinely reused client session, or compare two endpoint configurations while keeping the request fixed. Avoid attributing a change to one factor when several changed together.
Use the slow phase to choose the next check

Important limits in the example implementation
The sample script in the source article should not be treated as validated phase-separated or connection-reuse code. Its displayed calculations assign both connect_ms and ttfb_ms the same start-to-first-byte interval, so the fields duplicate one another rather than isolating connection setup from TTFB.
It also calls urllib.request.urlopen for each sample. The Python 3.14.8 urllib.request documentation says urllib uses HTTP/1.1 and includes a Connection: close header in requests. Accordingly, the displayed code does not demonstrate a reused connection, even though the article recommends comparing reuse. Use a client and instrumentation that really support and expose the behavior you intend to test.

The sample’s sleeps stand in for patch application and running pytest; they do not perform those tasks. Its live mode sends a fixed JSON prompt to a caller-provided URL, not a general inference API integration. A real endpoint may require authentication, another payload format, streaming, or other protocol details. Nothing in the example establishes compatibility with a particular provider.

Treat phase timings as diagnostic clues. Compare repeated observations, confirm that the measured fields mean what their names imply, and keep remote and local execution distinct. A p99 shift is useful for deciding what to inspect next, but it is not a causal explanation or a guarantee that a proposed change will help.
